This sheep has been struck by blowflies, let's get the maggots off it and give it medication. This is a common problem on New Zealand farms that we deal with throughout the year. Let's make this sheep more comfortable by shearing off the maggots and applying a medication treatment.

@@ethnaleigh4488 No, it can happen quite quickly, especially in warm climates. All it really takes is a couple of fly bites or an open wound and flies get into the opened skin and lay eggs then BOOM, you have maggots. Actually this breed of fly will lay eggs on a healthy sheep. When maggots eat living tissue it is called obligate myiasis. The adult Australian blowfly is very aggressive in its laying of eggs on the backs of sheep. The maggots start biting and form a wound which attracts even more flies.

This sheep did not have an injury. Australian Blowflies lay maggots on the backs of perfectly healthy sheep which then begin to bite, causing a wound which then attracts more flies. The product we apply at the end kills remaining maggots (so does exposure to the sun and elements) and deters more flies from attacking the area.

Flystrike happens quickly. A sheep can get into this condition in only a few days. This can happen in spring, summer or autumn and especially when conditions are humid. Flystrike can be a significant problem for New Zealand sheep farmers. It is estimated that 2-10% of the national flock is affected by flystrike annually and the subsequent economic effects can be measured in the millions of dollars. Farmers in New Zealand spend in excess of $15 million annually on treatments.

@@leepearson7868 I'm no entomologist but I do know that the life cycle of a maggot is extremely short so while it may not have happened overnight, it happened extremely fast. A maggot is in the intermediary stages of it's lifecycle. Even someone like me who is a merchant marine knows that. I'm certainly not going to criticize a sheep farmer when I don't know his business. If he's out there working his herd, I'm pretty sure he knows far more about it than I do; particularly if he's posting it to show it to us.

For those who wonder how injuries happen to livestock and not noticed right away the answers simple, many are in large pastures and eat grass and some grain at certain times,so the farmer may not see them every day,but at feeding time they look at the livestock for anything unusual and if found the animal is caught and treated, dairy cow are seen and milked every day so their injuries, illness are caught and treated alot sooner then beef cattle, hope this helps

I’m sure they have too much work on their hands and are way too busy to have the time to wash a sheep, there are probably too many animals to fully inspect every week, and they are getting to the problem when they see it,

I want to learn why the flies lay their eggs on the sheep with no apparent food source. Maggots are attracted to dead flesh not live, so why are they being laid deep in the wool. Do the maggots eat the wool or is there a dead food source that I don’t see. Thank you for any help answering these questions. Thanks for the videos.

So, do the sheep get some sort of sore or skin irritation that attracts the flies to that area or is it random selection? I guess second question is that do the infestations turn their skin that dark color or is it a skin infection first?

Poor little fella, it must hurt a lot. It was open wounds that the shearing exposed. I hope the sheep soon got better. How about the quality of the wool that's growing on these wounds? Have the hair follicles been damaged at these spots?
@FarmWithMeNZ
@FarmWithMeNZ 2 жыл бұрын
The wool shorn from the flystrike area is spoiled, and is unable to be used. However the rest of the fleece and the wool that regrows after healing is fine, there is usually not long term damage to the area (however in severe cases wool production in the affected area may be reduced).
