Yeah, I have not played magic in a long long time. But the 4th edition and ice age were my first cards. I Remember walking in a store looking at the starter decks and wondering what this strange game was. Got back with a friend and we bought our first starter decks. Fun to see those cards again. Awesome to see dude love the passion and love of the game. We did our 30th right as well. Had a tournament with 50 precon decks from all the era's of Magic. Lots of prizes and a raffle for a premium Sliver deck. Was blast. There is a theme to the event as well as a D20 roll that adds an event like instance to all games at once. A natural 20 was rolled during the final table allowing all creatures from the top 20 cards on your library to come into play. Pure carnage. Was insane.

They actually fixed the rules for lords and made them the creature type they where representing. Zombie Master is indeed a zombie and does indeed regenerate himself and get swampwalk. He is also the most expensive card you opened im pretty sure. Awesome video man!

In the case of Zombie Master, the errata'd version gives 'other Zombies' the abilities. Zombie Master itself doesn't get them (edit: despite indeed having the Zombie creature type nowadays). But yeah, a LOT of old cards have had something about them changed or clarified later down the line. The changes can be looked up via WotC's card database or any other database that uses that info.
@fogeltje

All "Lord" type creatures generally boost other creatures of the type. Same with Lord of Atlantis or Goblin King who became their respective creature type but boost other Merfolk / Goblins. Now, having two Zombie Masters in play means they give each other swampnwalk and regeneration.
@Ocramman86

@MKH90 you are correct. I knew they changed the Lord creature type. I didn't know they errated the actual ability on Zombie Master as well. Good on wizards.

Great video man. I started playing in early 96. Fourth Ed was still the base set at the time. I bought my first 4th Ed starter deck from a buddy of mine who introduced me to the game. The rares I pulled were Power Surge, Wrath of God and Mind Twist. I was by myself when I opened it. I told my buddy what I pulled. When I mentioned the Wrath, he got quiet. I was new to the game and had no idea how powerful the card was. People who weren't around back then have no idea that we often had never seen or heard of the cards before. There was no internet to research anything. The first 4th Ed booster pack I opened was in front of my friends. The rare I pulled was a Force of Nature. My friend had never seen or heard of the card either. The words out of his mouth were "whoa, that dude's out of control". I felt the same. What made the game so great back then was the emotions that would be triggered by the artwork and the basic structure of the game. Magic became part of the fabric of my existence back then and will always be a part of who I am. The MTG of old is just that special. It gave me a place to go to in my own mind and heart to accept myself in a real world that is generally unaccepting. To love old magic is love oneself and the memories you make with your closest friends or family. The emotion I saw in this video is something I totally get. The world sucks now, but back then it was Magic.

How fun was that!? 4th was the best box art IMO. The box art looked so wicked buying them at my local Halloween store when I was a kid. I didn't know how to read well at the time but I still bought the decks and they were not cheep! I still bought the decks/packs because I loved the artwork but I did not know how to play the game. Later in my life an older friend told me how to play and now I'm an old drunk with very expensive old card$. At the age of ten my local LGS said there is no difference between Unlimited and Revised. As someone who also started at around this time, I genuinely don't think a more recent player (read as, started in the last 20 years) could really appreciate the sensations you've captured in this video. The tactile sensations of the cards. The excitement of opening cards that would get slotted right into your favorite deck (maybe or maybe not removing another card to make room for the new one). I feel like the competition of the game and the hyper-analytics of deck construction have completely robbed us of these simple joys that actually celebrate the game being both a game and fun.

Very cool brother! And yeah, same here, started with these, fallen, Homelands, chronicles and ice age. Just a little late. Did trade and purchase Duels when I could get them for under $20 each, unfortunately went to play once *a disgusting story, but long and short of it is a kid stole all my decks so I lost most of my good money cards. Thankfully I still have 13 FOW and a few Duels. But otherwise and finally to the point I started this comment for is I just watched 2 magic 30 openings, so good job on your tags. But yeah in 2 packs EVERY card he opened pretty much are contained in this starter deck. As far as the smell, Mirage I'm pretty sure, could have been Alliances but 96%sure it was Mirage were the first to have a specific scent that I liked. Thank you for this, I have some of these opened that I just put back in the box. Great memories, Tool and magic at the card shop/greenhouse. I was renting half of the space and when I got interested in the magic the woman started just having me cover her register and I got a little compensation in packs . So I spent many afternoons playing magic "at work" 💚 Man your reaction to Uncle, I rarely ever played black or red, they were the enemy in my mind, but yeah not as much rag man, as Uncle, the art on Istvan for me was just so cool, in a similar way as Stasis, WOG, etc. I collected him for his looks. ;) But yeah, had a 100+ card deck back then that I used for round table with whoever was in the shop that wanted to play. Deck was White/Blue/Art and an absolute BLAST! Howling Mines, glasses, stuff you'll rarely ever see today in most cases. For me the internet really hurt/ changed the game. With it came the ability to aquire any card and the WORST, NETDECKS! I was never the stereotypical (we were allowed to stereotype back then;) magic player but man the game got me hard and fast! Laid in bed at night thinking up combos etc. The brewing for me is the most fun of all and the fact I was in the store all day everyday I had first shot at trading for any desirable card and could kinda read when a box was due and would then pick up a handful of packs. Good ole days for sure. Though I'm sure my wife would love for me to just keep the few I have that maintained a lil value and get rid of the piles of 90s dups. Many 4th, ice age, Mirage and Alliances I have Tall stacks of EACH common and for example, I have at least 13 FOW, so that many uncommons from those sets. Unfortunately I'd left for the Urza block because I played primarily white, blue but loved the green cards most, just that stretch, no matter if I had all the best green I couldn't compete, but damnit had I known about Cradle at the time I know I'd traded all my red and black cards for a many of those bad boys as possible. Thankfully my dad, like every one else then was into sports cards so he got me 3 Urza starter decks for the next Christmas or 2. But unfortunately any good cards I had in them were swiped by a lgs owner here in Vermont including a Sliver Queen. He'd attempted to also swipe one of my Tropical Islands but I noticed that on my way home and went back. Took a long time but after mentioning calling the popo a couple times it was miraculously found on the floor behind the counter. 😡 I'd spent an hour or 2 going through his older stuff at a table while he went through mine at the desk so really no idea what else I may have lost. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson. Ok WOW, was JUST laid off from Global Foundries, was a senior Facilities tech and not used to having time on my hands. 🤣🤣🤣 anyway thanks again. Love my 4th Ed to spite the fact there's too much of it out there already and wotc is now printing dark boarded copies of them even though no one needs them. Could just buy them from folks like me. First pack of that I saw opened, paid $250 and didn't get $2.50 worth of rares and uncommons. Really 4th Ed/ white bordered versions of all of the cards wouldn't equal much more than that. It's rediculous

I remember 4th Edition. The first set to not have original duals. Still got a few Strip Mines in my time and a Mana Vault. It was my first core set. Reading the words “Summon Uncle Istvan” never gets old. ❤

Instead you can get theme boosters, probably just as useless as the 60 card decks, but they were a great source of lands.

Yeah, 4th ED and the Ice Age block are the last sets giving you that vintage feeling :) And those are the only ones for a rather low price for sealed packs. What I dont like about 4th is that you can get most of the four horseman singles as originals for not much money except sylvan library.

I started with D&D Adventures in Forgotten Realms and many people say that set sucks but its how I got into it so I can only imagine how you feel doing this. Well done. Were cards made thinner on purpose by Wizards of the Coast because people sleeve and double sleeve so much?
