Maybe the mistranslation was intentional. If I understand correctly, the spirit of the times was one where purity of devotion to the church was a thing. A witch could be seen as someone who had knowlege not given by the church.

The word used here is perierga, KJV translates it as "which used curious arts". Could very well be that they practiced evil magic, which would make sense in that context. Curious arts could also refer to the making of poisons, hence them burning their recipe books. Good find!

Imagine how afraid church leaders of previous times must have been, believing that someone knowing magic could hold them accountable for their actions, or challenge their control.
