Something that goes unsaid too often is when Magic's HIV was made public, he was shunned by a lot of people and players who were supposed to be his friends. Larry Bird was one of the first calls he got asking him how he was holding up and let him know whatever he needs, he's there.

Do the math Magic was supposedly diagnosed with Hiv BEFORE his son was conceived. Strangely his wife and son didn't get hiv, that was his humiliation ritual into the billionaires club. Magic shortchanged himself. The vote was 63-3 for Larry. If people are wondering why Larry won so convincingly, it's because Larry was credited for what was at the time the biggest turnaround in NBA history. The Celtics went 29-53 in 1979 and then 61-21 in Larry's rookie season.

Bird's attitude was total killer. His agent told how young Bird and his brother went to Boston and were put up in a fancy hotel by the Celtics. They never ordered room service or anything, but when it came to contract time, he got paid the highest rookie signing bonus ever. Killer. He came to the Celtics and immediately took over. Cedric Maxwell told a time when rookie Bird made a bucket over a double-team. During a timeout, Pete Maravich (one of the greatest college players ever and a NBA legend) told Bird that he should pass back out when double-teamed. Rookie Bird told veteran Maravich, "If you were any good, they wouldn't be double-teaming me." Maravich retired after that season. KILLER. Larry would dominate today as he did in his era, maybe more now with better medicine. Remember, Bird played most of his career with a badly damaged back. Killer.

Bird was that dude and he was gonna mess everyone up 🤣 Bird and Magic had tremendous respect for one another and created a rivalry nobody can ever level up too, hopefully we can get a bird side of the story but he’s probably chilling on his farm somewhere

Jordan came shortly after but no way he would have been able to take it to such a next level without Larry and Magic. Also others. I think we forget that league as a whole was hugely competitive starting in the 80s. Sure Larry, magic, Jordan take credit but if it wasnt packed with bunch of others stars it wouldnt be as popular.

Slightly revisionist. Most people don't know that Magic is 3 years younger than Bird. Bird's rookie season was a borderline MVP season, while Magic's was a borderline ALL-NBA season. The fact that Magic had 1 monstrous all-time game in the finals. A game on the level that he wouldn't even have for the next 3 years. And now everyone is trying to pretend that Magic was the same level as Bird when they started. Bird from 1988 onward wasn't in Magic's league either, but don't pretend that their on court impact was similar when they came into the league.

Agree, Bird was a top three player in the league from year one onwards and it didn’t stop until he did his back about ten yrs later.

The rise of the NBA in the early 80's owed to the Larry-Magic (Celtics-Lakers) rivalry. Jordan then joined. I am lucky enough to witness many of their battles.

Bird is nowhere on Steph level. You old timers need to stop comparisons. Bird shot back board bricks, his jump shot was like he throws the ball at the basket. Steph could outshoot Bird blindfolded.

@@yo3rdtier128 You're a fool, the only thing Steph is good at is shooting 3's. His mid range is average, Bird was a better all around shooter. And I'm not old, I'm 26.
