I had no idea that a new anime of Magic Knight Rayearth was in the works! The original anime, OVAs, and manga were quite popular here in South America. I never played the Saturn game, even though I always intended to. I'm no fan of Working Designs localizations, but there is the Unworking Designs patch. The Unworking patch they made for Popful Mail on Sega CD was amazing. Maybe it is time to give this game a chance. Thank you very much for the video. It was excellent, as usual.

Saw this got posted and immediately squealed a bit in joy. In the summer of 2002 a friend of mine was working part time at Gamestop. It was his dream job for that age, being fresh out of high school and our only cares being gaming and girls. One day someone came in and tried to trade in a Sega Saturn. Of course they weren't taking them anymore so my buddy offered the guy something like $50. Didn't come with any games so we started bidding on different stuff on eBay. That entire summer we played through Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Shining Force 3, and of course Magic Knight Rayearth. Even it being half a decade old or so at the time it still blew up away with the quality of the sprite work and all the effort that went into it. I rarely see that friend anymore. It's been over 20 years and occasionally we'll run into each other in town or at a reunion or (sadly too often) funeral. Every time we meet it's like we pick right back up from when life took us down different paths. Last time I saw him I actually brought up the Saturn and all the hard to find titles we hoarded that summer. He said he still has it all in storage and I made sure he had my information to contact me if he ever wants to sell. While I could easily get my own set up it's about the memories made with that specific system and games, of that long ago time when my world was filled almost exclusively with friendship and fun.

Most of my friends still have it, too, because we were all super into the Saturn and snapped up whatever we could get our hands on. I beat it back then and enjoyed it. @@jarfdrzaly well, it wasn’t really surprising that Sailor Moon was struggling in the mid 90s. Anime, in general, just wasn’t big here in the U.S. during that time period. It would take the combination of Pokemon, Digimon, and Toonami (where both DBZ and Sailor Moon found their audiences) in the late 90’s to finally help push anime into the mainstream. And with streaming, it’s finally made it culturally acceptable to be an anime fan.

Honestly they should had hurry up and release the anime series in North America once they seen the success of Sailor Moon. Shoot, Cardcaptor Sakura was release many years later and still was somewhat a hit in North America. The fact that Sega didn't have exclusive rights to make/publish games for this IP just show how incompetent Sega is in business. I believe they also co-own Neon Genesis as well and those games were being release to other platforms while Sega was still making their own consoles. It's funny that they did a small amount of games on animes that they co-own yet did a bunch of Bleach & Hokuto No Ken games which they don't own at all. That's classic Sega for ya! Wow, thanks for telling us the name of the Tail's creator. I didn't know that before this video, lol. People really need to stop hating on Working Designs! A story about Sega in the 90s, it seems that the Three Wise Men have come early this year... I remember seeing screenshots of this game in the video game magazines of the time, which always had a section where they talked about Japanese games, especially JRPGs, which really caught my attention because of their aesthetics, which reminded me of the animes I watched on TV. The story of Working Designs is also quite interesting, and has a few anecdotes, like when at some point they considered turning "Popful Mail" into a video game of the Sonic franchise, starring a supposed sister of the hedgehog, something similar to what was done with Puyo Puyo and Dr Robotnik mean bean machine. The truth is that with how active the Megadrive scene is, I wouldn't be surprised if someone released a project rescuing the idea, or maybe it already happened, and I haven't heard about it.

Can't wait if they're really releasing a remake of this game. I never knew they made a game for this anime. This is one of my favorites back in my elementary days.

Was Sega also involved in a similar way with the Sakura Wars franchise? The original games were only on Saturn and the recent PS4 game was published by Sega (I think there were some PS2 games as well)

Yep! Short story a very similar deal. But I’ll make it a video someday soon!

I love Magic Knight Rayearth, Hikaru, Umi and Fuu are possibly the most likeable anime characters I've ever seen, their chemistry is amazing.

I REALLY hope CLAMP redoes Tsubasa...they never finished the anime for it and they have been teasing new art for that series for over a DECADE DX Still no word, if they're only now doing Rayearth maybe X will go after since it's nearly 30 too. Can't wait for the next video, always fun to see how these did in the US since I don't live there

I love how in the us version if you hold a certain button combination the intro fmv has a very bad imitation of mariah carey-ish song instead of the usual song.

Realy great doc, dude. I love this series. After I got into Dragon Ball and started learning Japanese, I used to go to the Marukai in my state (US) and they had just a ton of Rayearth stuff there. I was captivated by how beautiful Fuu is (and I loved girls in glasses ever since), and between this series and Slayers, it was one of the manga that wasn't Dragon Ball that I began collecting the Japanese copies of for the day in the future when I'd actually be able to read it. The anime was really good too, but I find the second season isn't quite as good. Season 1 had a great story and the twist at the end was actually unexpected and really
sweet
. I never got the american release of the game but the fact that the JP version is so cheap just goes to my theory that it's easier to just learn japanese and play game's in the original language than it is to collect rare, expensive american versions sometimes. Finally (sorry for the wall of text) I wanted to say about one of your last points, that you kinda changed my opinion on goofy 90s localisations. In one of your earlier videos you compared that to the way japanese 80~90s RPGs used to regularly include pop culture references and timely jokes. So in a way Ted Woolsey and his infamous choices, like writing Beavis and Butthead into FF6, were actually totally in line with what you said about the original versions of the game. I still don't want to hear twitter slang in current year dubbed anime tho haha
@GTV-Japan10 күн бұрын
I like those kinds of touches in games. It makes them feel like they are a fabric of the culture and not this thing out on their own. It’s weird because the demand word for word translation and when something is off they have a tantrum. But when there’s muh Indie RPG (tm) like Dragon Fantasy or Bob’s Game where the weirdness goes off the rails and it’s not funny anymore they lap it up! Well how is that different from WD? It’s not! Oh god and Dragon Fantasy don’t get me started! Every battle has that oh so clever text that never ended and was never funny!

What should localizes do when Japanese slang shows up...

@bluebaron6858 whatever the most annoying keyboard warrior thinks is correct I guess 😂
@Prodmullefc5 күн бұрын
@@bluebaron6858 that's a tough question because it's like asking how you preserve wordplay from one language into another. But they should be really careful about how they render the words because today's funniest word that everyone is using on English social media quickly becomes tomorrow's cringe boomerspeak. I think if there isn't a handy direct analog, like with ザコ and _small_ _fry_ it's best if they just make up a word on the spot lol. The Super GALS dub did it haha

I remember seeing ads for this in Gamefan magazine. the magazine went out of business a few years later, but I wanted to play every sega saturn rpg in the ads,. Such great anime style in all these games and all I had was final fantasy, Lunar, and legend of the dragoon. But nobody I knew had a Sega Saturn and I couldn't afford one. All those interesting titles are forgotten now. Sega was ahead of the game as far as hardware, they just didn't have the right games. There's only a handful of Dreamcast titles that are interesting to play. House of the Dead, Ikaruga, Powerstone, some Sonic stuff. It's a shame it didn't take off when its specs rivalled the PS2 years before it was released.

@ Sega was big in Europe. In the UK Sega was a giant. The Master System demolished the NES, Mega Drive beat the SNES and the Saturn sold well enough the get many games that didn’t come out in the US.

Crazy how your videos always hit when these games or franchises are on my mind. I recently found out how much this game is going for on eBay. Around $900-1200 USD. I was considering selling mine and using the funds for a PS5 Pro, but do I want to get rid of it? …for that money, maybe?
@GTV-Japan10 күн бұрын
At this point just emulate! $1000 can be used for something so much more useful. Starve the resellers! In Japan the ps5 pro is 120,000¥!!!! 🤯 it’s exchange rates back to 700 us but to earn and spend 120k is equal to 1200 us. So nooooo way for me. Never.
@neko_samurai10 күн бұрын
Yeah, even $700 is kinda crazy when performance results are so mixed. I could fly somewhere with what I’d get for this game. Crazy how expensive retro gaming has gotten. And here I bought this for $59 at Walden Software back in ‘98.

I hope the make a remaster of the Saturn game. and don't have to the redraw sprites but playable for all modern consoles and pc, but have option to have original saturn fmvs or high-quality dvd ones.

Someone on KZbin upscaled the animation with AI and since it’s already kind of widescreen it doesn’t look so bad! The profile faces when they talk in towns could be redone and the font could be sharper. In game they could even go like the recent Zelda game and look like figurines. It would be awesome! 🙏

I can honestly say that I never even knew this game existed, or any of the other games based on the series. I did know about the anime, assumed there was probably a manga it was based on, and could have guessed that it would have had games because so many popular anime/manga do. But that it was the last one on Saturn, and that its English release was after the Saturn was discontinued, was totally new to me. I'm a little curious to see if I can find a way to play it now that I know about it, though.

I hope that the reimagine of the anime comes wiht a rerelease of the video games in a collection. Or at least the Saturn game. Oh who am I kidding... the reimearging of old anime never goes hand in hand with the games. I gotta fire this up on an emulator at some point.

Also there's an undub patch online for anybody who wants to play the game with the Original Japanese dub and English text. Although the English opening and dub is also pretty amazing for its time!

Maybe I'm on the minority regarding Rayearth, because I'm more inclined towards the manga than the anime, mainly because Presea doesn't die in the manga. And I have both editions of the manga that were published here in Brazil, the first one being in Half-tanko (Yes, it was a common practice here that mangas were published in half of the japanese volumes until mid-late 2000's when full volumes started to get massively distributed) which used the Dub names (Lucy, Marine, Anne and Priscilla, instead of Hikaru, Umi, Fuu and Presea), and the re-release, wih improved translation and original names, which was in full tanko.. I never played the saturn game, mostly because I didn't had a Saturn and my neighbour who had the console, never bought the game. However, I played a fan-translation of the game gear one, and even played the Super Famicom one, which was one of my formaion games in the RPG genre on early 2000's (god bless fantranslations and emulators)
