From the late 1980's to the mid-1990's, gaming was dominated by a rivalry between Sega and Nintendo, the two biggest game console manufacturers in the world. Sega, starting as the underdog, challenged Nintendo's hold on the console market in one of the most explosive, and widely viewed conflicts between the video game giants.
Between rival marketing campaigns, a slew of groundbreaking software, and technical innovations, Sega and Nintendo changed the video game industry forever in what could only be described as the first console war. The global conflict ranges from east Asia, to the Americas, Europe, and even Oceania. The winner of this conflict would go on to shape the game industry for years, while the loser, slowly drifts into obscurity. This is the Great Console War: The Story of Sega vs Nintendo.
00:00 - Prologue
01:00 - Part 1 - Enter Genesis
14:12 - Part 2 - Playing with Super Power

Here's some more information on how this series came to be: I read Console Wars by Blake J Harris in late 2018 and fell in love with his storytelling ability as well as the characters of the Super Nintendo vs Sega Genesis era. As I thought about it more and more, I wanted to do my own take on the conflict. Originally I planned on tackling this back in early 2019. After the Final Fantasy XV video, I sat down and started writing the script, only to stop about a paragraph into the second episode. I didn't work on videos again for over a year after that due to various reasons. When I finally got back into the swing of things with the DS series and some other games, I felt ready to tackle this subject once again. Instead I ended up making the Wii U series at the end of the summer last year. My plan was to then work on this series in the fall and winter of 2020, but the birth of my son ended up sucking away all my creative energy. It wasn't until 2021 that I felt like I had the skills to make this. I'm super proud of this video and my next goal is to make a series that's even better than this. I don't know when that video will come, but until then, enjoy my favorite series on the channel: The Great Console War: The Story of Sega vs. Nintendo. Fun Fact: "The Great Console War" is a riff on the youtube channel "The Great War". I originally conceived an idea of covering the series in a more militaristic tone before I really had a strong idea of what my style was. There was even going to be a prologue and epilogue like it was some sort of long forgotten story.

What a good video,My gaming experience started serious with the Gameboy pocket and later with ‘Snes”(2nd hand)and the original “PlayStation”.I’ve had most of the consoles.Loving some games on almost every platform. As a gamer it’s always intresting to see what other Brands had to offer.Personaly I’m not about console war of being a fanboy.I’m a gamer give me a good experience or even Beyond and I’m a happy gamer.I like Sony for a few exclusives,”Nintendo”and “Microsoft” to.Even Indie developers are doing so good and surprise me with diverse experiences.

@@joshuamackey2326 I didn't get a genesis till round 95, much later than most other kids. I know that was the year because I remember playing MK2 in the living room of my Dad's apartment, and then later watching Speed and The Lion King on VHS (which both came out in 94) lol Before that my only experience with the console was going over to my older cousin's house a few times a year, and he had one with Sonic 1 and Street Fighter 2. Those weekends were some of the best times of my life.

Many a great detail, often left unknown, presented in high-quality. I'm not so much of a gamer now,..but more of a Bushcraft man. But I do come back to my games now and then.... I grew up with Pong, the Atari 2600....the NES and SNES of course...Etc. I have watched the entire franchise evolve into what it is today. Many repetitive and UNfun games,..... but that's just me. Excellent round-up , thanks !! During my childhood i grew up spending countless hours playing games with my Sega MegaDrive/Genesis , and as a SEGA-child i witnessed both the massive success of the MegaDrive followed by the shocking failure of the SEGA Saturn. Once we were the proud owners of a strong console and in only 1 generation everything unexpectedly collapsed. The story of SEGA was both ,sweet and bitter ,and always brings me some level of sadness even today. Thanks for the memories !!

Retro gamer, collector and lifelong Sega fan here. My games room has a Mega Drive, Mega CD, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and, for the last two years, a SNES. Love the fact that games truly were different back then depending on the port. The different rosters in WWF Super Wrestlemania and Royal Rumble, depending on whether you owned the SNES or Mega Drive/Genesis port, springs to mind.

I agree, the SNES was way better. Mostly down to the controllers for me as the directional pad on the Mega Drive felt slippery and difficult. Loved the feel of the SNES shoulder buttons. Sega didn't have Mario Bros. or Zelda. Also, I noticed how a lot of Sega owners would tell me Nintendo was for kids, even though at the time we were all actually kids. Because buying into marketing makes you look so mature. lol.

For me, the Sega Genesis, much like the Playstation, was cemented as my chosen console based solely on an exclusive title of a game belonging to each console. For Sega, it was Sonic and for Playstation, it was Metal Gear. I was a diehard fan of both series and it was those exclusive titles that kept me glued and loyal to these consoles, regardless whether the graphics/gameplay was superior or inferior to rival consoles. It's amazing how much a character or game series can be adored to a point of loyal and unconditional love. When Sega and Sony lost the exclusivity of those titles, my console preference became completely flexible. Now that they don't make Sonic games anymore (like they used to) and Metal Gear is dead (due to Kojima's departure), I am completely lost with games. Aside from God of War, no exclusive title has won my heart like the one's in the past.

@@48hourrecordsteam45 sorta the same with me and the PS3 but they saved me last minute from getting rid of it. When I bought the PS3, I did so strictly for bragging rights. It was still scarce and I actually got it through a 3rd party. There was absolutely Nothing to play for it lol. If it wasn't for Elder Scrolls Oblivion to keep me occupied, I think I would have sold it for an Xbox because Metal Gear Guns of the Patriots Took. For. EVER. I mean like. For freakin' Ever. Luckily, they eventually rolled out a shit ton of exclusive titles like God of War and Infamous. Even after replaying Metal Gear for the 90th time, Skyrim came out and I fell into a hole lol. PS3 managed to hold on to me until the release of the PS4.

I have 70,000 including every SEGA game from the Master System to the Dreamcast and NES to the Wii-U. It also has every Neo Geo, OG Xbox, Turbo/Super/CD Grafx Philips CD-i, PC games and Every handheld game in history. Plus it has every arcade game ever released from the beginning of gaming until 2010. It's pure insanity. I'm 47 and will probably die before I play them all. it's a shame white LEDs weren't a thing back then, as the battery life doubles in Nomads and Game Gears with LED backlights / LED-backlit screens swapped in (until 1998, it was most cost effective to use the sort of colour screens that had to be backlit with miniature fluorescent lamps and their associated circuitry that converted battery power to high voltage)

Had SEGA gone in halfsies with SONY for the PlayStation (which would've netter the former about $7-10 billion), the arcade giant could've put money into marketing and game development for the Sega CD and Nomad, greatly expanding the already successful Genesis/Mega Drive platform, which finally reached about 40 million consoles sold. The Nomad would then have had enough games to last into the early Aughties, perhaps even as long as the PS1 in 2006.

Personally, I think Nintendo deserved the success they had with the NES in North America. They took a big chance releasing it just after the video game crash and were very clever with the way it was marketed as an 'entertainment system' rather than a 'video game' system. At the same time, with their predatory anti-competitive licensing scheme and the horrific reliability of the NES front loader they also deserved being curb stomped by Sega after being blind sided by the Genesis / Mega Drive. They got too arrogant and needed to be brought down to size for their own good.

That fatality of liu kang mortal kombat 3 where he sets you on fire. Forwward 2 times down 2 times lowkick (button c it was on the megadrive and butten a it was on the super nintendo. All the versions played from the first 3 mortal kombat games even the game boy variants. And we all know what happened with the portable console wars nintendo wins that as well because when the psp released, the game boy advance was already bowed down for the nintendo ds i mean, look what happens with the psvita it was when the 3ds was out discontinued. And yes now is the 3ds also discontinued but at the end, a console or thing is dead when you dont have fun with it anymore even after its life. The game boy was around from 1989 all the way up to 2003 it slams the game gear away kaboom like a basebal bat hahahahahahaha

The blood the fatalitys blew my mind as a kid I can't remember what else I played but my brother and I wanted one, we got one for Christmas a model 2 around the time sonic spinball was out, so we got eternal champions, sonic spinball, the jungle book, and asterix and the great rescue , and NBA jam TE, loved the genesis and buddy down the street would bring over golden axe 2 alisia dragoon road rash 2 shadow dancer, he had a lot of great games it showed me how great the system was, I still remember going to a game store game x change and getting ghouls n ghost still one of my favorite games. at some point I got sonic 2 mortal kombat 1 the 3 and sonic 3 primal rage and altered beast, the Lion King that tmnt fighters, street fighter 2 te, Mick and mac, sadly I stole money from my parents and got vector man and shinobi 3 lol but the genesis will always be one if my favorite classic consoles. Super Nintendo will be my all time favourite but I enjoyed hanging around my friend's house because he had the Mega Drive. I own both consoles, like the both of them, but yeah ther last few years all of a sudden people have turned on the SNES, despite how much of a beast it truly is. People like to discredit the games for using custom chips, but Nintendo did that on purpose, and that in turn allowed the console to have a longer lifespan than it would've had otherwise. By the time it died in Japan, the PS2 had already come along.
