In New Zealand in the 80's we thought we observed this but turns out there was a mycologist (PR Johnston) working advising police and farmers to use a fungicide that caused the paralysis. Stamets mentions the guy when outlining NZ psilocybe fungi in his book on psilocybes of the world. I experienced collapse myself, and saw several other instances of it. One minute you're ok the next minute your legs are simply gone. Then you'd be ok a short time (5 mins to half hour) later. I wound up telling off the guy who advised the use of the fungicide. Someone had to inform him his decisions affected real people in the real world. He smiled benignly like I'd just told him a mildly amusing anecdote, then refused to work with me at a later date. Bit of a dick, really.

@@marty3076 agreed, WLP is a quintessential part of a large Subaeruginosa trip. It wasn't until I started cultivating cubes that I even knew there was a difference. Heavy body, loss of muscle control and then just ride that trippy bliss. I never understood how people did shit while tripping on shrooms (untill I tried cubes), I cacoon myself in blankets get somewhere dark or scenic and listen to some chill beats. I also get WLP in my hands the day after most heavy trips, I find high potassium helps with it

I’ve had this happen a lot. It’s not that it makes you paralyzed, it just makes you extremely weak. To the point you can only sit there and wait a few hours before you gain some strength back. It really sucks and is very uncomfortable.

this happened to me on my very first trip! i wasnt even trying to trip, i just wanted microdosing but took a bit too much. had NO positive effects what so ever, actually NO psycho active effects other than ravaging anxiety. i could think and speak pretty clearly. and yeah i started shaking, my heart rate increased, even my breathing was hampered a bit and i lost control over my limbs especially my legs thank god i was at home and could lay down in my bed. i had eaten very little, i had slept pretty poorly and i had at least 2 cups of coffee before, maybe a bit dehydrated too (i know, careless, but like i said i was not actually trying to trip). those may have been contributing factors.

they must have an enzyme path in common. perhaps something only temporarily induced or inhibited, perhaps they all gave the right enzyme a beloved substrate and it was simply too busy to do its normal role. read once that estragole in basil 'can' be converted into a carcinogen (by cyp2d6) but is mitigated by other components of the basil leaf that force a different, safe metabolic path (iirc) perhaps something like this. and following from this, some enzyme supplement or a mild reversible inhibitor might prevent this from happening at all.

I've had this a couple of times with Psilocybe subaeruginosa. It was from old mushrooms both times, and the second time antihistamines seemed to help a lot. I'm aware of a few other anecdotal cases from friends, and at least with subaeruginosa it is always with old mushrooms.

True that! don't eat old/mature wood lovers. The bad chemical is produced later in the enzymatic process so the order more mature the WL, the more WLP you will experience. This is djbabyjesus. It's so cool to hear from people that got my message in a bottle about Benadryl. One thing to be clear about. Its not the antihistamines treating the WLP. It is because Diphenhydramine is a potent antimuscarinic (a competitive antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors).

Main reason I think it is real is because trimethyltryptamine (bye itself not 4-po-tmt or 5-ho-tmt) acts a paralytic agent in itself, so adding a hydroxyl group at the fourth position probably won’t change it’s pharmacology. So I think Aeruginascin (4-po-dmt) is the culprit. Also due to the core pharmacology of paralytic agents this actually could be pretty dangerous....And it might not even actually be true paralysis but cataplexy so who knows, we need more studies.

Im new to taking mushrooms, just started last 2 weeks, Ive tried them a couple of times and experienced wood loves paralysis twice. First time it was my hands and fingers, and legs. second time it was much stronger and i couldnt stand anymore, Had to drag my self to my room and on to my bed. I knew of wood lover paralysis before i took mushroom and did quite a bit of research in general. I didnt get freaked out because before i took them i understood, nothing bad can happen from taking mashrooms in the sense of dying or anything, Unless you walk out while tripping and hurt yourself but taking mushrooms them selves are fine and its all a mental game, so i knew nothing bad was going to happen. While i was feeling wood lovers i couldnt eat, my mouth went numb like i had been to the dentist and had multiple teeth removed, i could walk without shaking but i just laughed about it, Figured its my body and the shrooms finding their balance, I was on a lot of meds a few years ago ( not my choice, medical negligence ) and that gave me depression and many other problems. Mushrooms are natural, and benefit the mind, so i figured its just doing its job. Im not afraid of these things by any means because ive been on those other meds and hit rock bottom, Even when i felt paralyzed, because i knew it could be part of it, i just laughed it off. Tried to butter some bread last night haha that was a mission.

I actually thought I had poisoned myself and was scared as hell. It frightened the hell out of me it really did. What an interesting video. Aerugenascin was actually tested for in the last Psilocybin Cup. Based on the test results I saw, it was by far the least abundant tryptamine found within the samples. For the longest time I’ve been trying to figure out what causes that heavy “body load” in certain cubes, and now I’m wondering if maybe this compound is responsible…I had previously presumed that either baeocystine or norbaeocystine were the cause, but thanks to this video I have further research to do!

When I heard about "Wood Lovers Paralysis" I equated the phenomenon immediately "Sleep Paralysis". The mushrooms when consumed have induced several altered states of mind along the sleep cycle but out of sequence. The body trying to reassert its natural order starts slipping gears to find its way back to "normal". I have had several episodes of sleep paralysis in my life, I have learned to relax back into my dreamstate and try to slowly start moving my fingers, hands, arms, and so on. Its always scary.

I am somebody that has very strong will power especially when it comes to physical things I have always been an athlete so the fact that I could not get out of my bed and move made me determined to do so. What I’m trying to say is if it can hold me down it can hold anyone down, my dog noticed my discomfort she came over and laid down on top of my chest to hold me down I was extremely uncomfortable because I had to stand up go outside to vomit but I could not move. My dog was able to put me to sleep I tried to push her off for me and to voice her to get off of my chest because of how violently nauseous I was but she understood that I needed to sleep so she did not budge and she put me to sleep.. when I woke up about 30 minutes later I used all my strength to get out of bed crawl on my hands and knees get outside and throw up very violently, I felt much better and was able to move after I threw up

Wood lovers paralysis is very real, tho i'd refer more to it as a central nervous system glitch. I dried some Psilocybin cyanescens picked from my back garden on wood chips. 3hrs in I had less than 5% cognitive ability and when i even gathered strength, i could think clear how to move but nothing is moving, i wanna move but all signals to my limbs were just pure weakness for round 8 hrs of no strength whatsoever i'd occasionally get sudden jolts of uncontrollable shaking, which was comfort cause I'm moving even if the were random spasms, it faded slowly over the course of a few days , i still couldn't muster the cognitive strength to put my limbs where i wanted them to be 3 days later,, i don't know what Parkinson's disease is like but the symptoms resembled in my experience 100%that of some kind of temporary central nervous system drunkenness. i had wondered maybe it happened because of type of wood chips adding in the local grounds keeper spraying chems onto the wood chips., later found out i had a few thoughts on why i was so dead weighted. was never scared until i started thinking if my body is this weak could my heart slow etc. i just road it out for days and gradually was getting strength back. .recap. From ingestion to complete 100% body functioning well enough to play musical instruments and work again was 6 days with still a tiny tiny weakness. Recovering from that cognitive disturbance made me appreciate the ability to move on command so much more. Never scared me from psilocybin. all is good and well, i continue to explore and try all kinds of species thanks for the video

I think someone is looking into the Paralytic effects medicinally because they think the compound in question is too big to cross the blood brain barrier so it only effects the body and not the heart and lungs. So for surgery or other procedures requiring the nerves to be shut off with out the danger of stoping the heart or breathing could be quite the break though.

I happened to experience this phenomenon last night. I ate wild picked cyans one day and had an amazing day. The next time however I lost all use of my legs, partial use of arms and hands and my mouth had a hard time chewing properly. My wife had to wipe my mouth like I was a baby. It was quite scary indeed. I had gone to the local 7-Eleven late at night. Had an episode in the parking lot where my legs gave out. I had to ask a total stranger to get in my car pull up next to me so I could crawl into my passenger seat. All the while the owner of the 7-Eleven was blaring pavarotti as loud as he possibly could. I figured he was doing this to keep away homeless people. But I'll tell you what, while waiting there for an hour and a half for my friend to come pick me up. I almost started crying from this shear frustration of not being able to turn down that music. Loud opera and mushroom trips do not mix. I continued to experience the effects throughout the evening and into the next morning. I would be able to get up for a few minutes, make something to eat. Go to the bathroom, stuff like that. But then it would just happen without warning. I would suddenly collapse onto the ground face on the floor. My dogs would come and keep me company and warm until my wife found me lying flat on the floor in our bedroom doorway. Be careful anyone who wants to play around with wood loving mushrooms.

Cyanescens have what has been coined the “Rip Van Winkle Effect” It’s that initial euphoric transition high, the sleepy reverie, lots of hallucinatory yawning & deep breaths... A Forester from Eugene, Oregon coined this term in the early 1990’s. His ame is Guske grew up with the Pranksters.

@@FreshCapMushrooms Yo! djbabyjesus here....I'm the guy that came up with he whole histamine hypothesis in the first place! lol. Let me clear the air about that. Originally back in 05, a friend ate some cyanescens and experienced mild WLP. Thinking that maybe they were having an allergic reaction they took Benadryl and said it worked. Later I tried it for full blown WLP, and it worked. I incorrectly assumed it was because it was an antihistamine, posted it on the shroomery and thus the whole histamine rabbit hole was born. This theory has be thoroughly debunked. It was never really a real theory more of a mistake about the mechanism of action of Benadryl. Benadryl is an anticholinergic, This is why it works for WLP.

I wonder if this has been responsible for any mysterious deaths or disappearances in the woods. People eat the shrooms and get paralysis and then die of exposure because they can't set up camp or a fire or put on warm clothes and get into their sleeping bag when they're paralyzed

Benadryl I think is pharmacologically related to deleriant tropane alkaloids like those in Datura, Brugmansia, Nutmeg, etc... I might be mixing groups that are not totally related, but I definitely remember trying to take psychoactive amounts of Benadryl in high school (almost 20 years ago now, geez) and experiencing very unpleasant but significant effects. Maybe there is some pharmacological function going on even at moderate doses that would help someone experiencing WLP, I don't know, but what alarms me is that some of the symptoms described in WLP, namely the difficulty swallowing, is something I experienced years ago when I took too much Benadryl.

5 years ago I had a whole heap of magic mushrooms here in Adelaide South Australia , I got the paralysis and my neighbour phoned the ambulance after I dragged myself to the front door . When I was in hospital I couldn't reach out for a drink of water the Dr kept saying "grab it and drink it " ! He thought I was still high , anyway they sent me home in a taxi , when I got through the front door I fell over and hit a cupboard and hurt my shoulder and had to drag myself into the bedroom and it took 45 mins to do so . It was funny in one respect when I went to hospital I asked the nurse did it seem like everyone had big ears and funny hats and had a greenish tinge , and she assured me that was the case because it was Halloween . I'm a big healthy looking bloke and the ambulance staff kept on saying to me climb on the stretcher but i couldn't or they were too lazy.

I think the paralysis also depends on the amount taken. I have also had Woodlover's Paralysis three times and have harvested Psilocybe Cyanescens in Germany. I have a grow site that I have been consuming for 4 years . In the last three years I have never had paralysis from the fungi. Just this year paralysis occurred in several cases. I wonder what is responsible for the increased cases this year. The growing conditions were excellent this year. The paralysis occurred after consuming over 2.7 grams. I would be interested to know how high the dosages were for those of you who have experienced this!

@@1hitwoon99 14 g getrocknet? I don’t know what kind of shrooms I tripped on but 2 out of 3 times I tripped, I immediately felt snatched out of my body. I felt very heavy. Was walking to the bathroom, and thankfully my my mom and son were there to pick me up and hold me on the toilet bc I was like a limp noodle. Not enjoyable. Funny thing is, I even feel this on acid, to a slightly lesser degree. Through all of my attempts to become more spiritual through psychedelics, it only made me feel more disconnected and alien. I didn’t see or hear anything, other than distorted depth perception. I kept my eyes closed bc it was too bright. I felt more alone than ever and gained no insight. It may have increased my anxiety and insecurities. I guess I am just wired differently.
