In this Review Show Special Craig Petty sits down with Tom Wright who co-created the Gravity Thread System with João Miranda. This product promises to be unlike anything you have seen before.
After the interview Craig reviews the product in full, talks about the pros and cons and why whether you should buy the prop for your show. Here is more information about Gravity
Built from the ground up with the close-up worker in mind, Gravity Reel is more than a reel: it's a tool for your imagination.
This utility and design patent-pending Reel was designed from the ground-up by Joao Miranda and his extraordinary team in Portugal, with the consulting of the IT expert Tom Wright who performs invisible thread magic for over 15 years in real world situations.
This are some of the main features of the Gravity Reel:
- Double motor system that allows the performer to have a giant HOOP of IT anytime, allowing for true miracles to be performed. If you prefer to use a single thread instead of the hoop system, the fact that you have a SECOND thread ready to use is reassuring!(With exclusive permission from Surya Kumar and James George).
- Program saving and play: you can record and save UP to 3 different programs so that you allow the Gravity Reel to do all the work for you! With a push of a button the motors reproduce every single movement you recorded.
Combining the recording and play with the HOOP system you can create amazing and unique effects: imagine for example making a water bottle fall at your command and then have the thread automatically retract to your pocket!
You start and end clean, every time, with absolutely nothing to find out.
- Vibration feedback recording: besides programming the tension and movement of the motors you can also program the vibrations, so that you can cue yourself in any part of your routine!
For example, let's say you wish to make a bill levitate and jump in a glass and at the end of the routine you wish to make it fly automatically to your waiting hand. Thanks to the vibration recording you can buzz yourself at any time: for example, when the bill starts to jump in the glass, and another vibration when it flies to your hand, so this way you can concentrate on your presentation.
The vibration feedback is CRUCIAL for any pre-recorded performance because YOU know when YOUR actions will happen right before they happen.
- Adjustable Speed control: you can decide the speed of each motor individually.
The beauty of the Gravity Reel controller is that it has a SCALE from 1 (Reel constant pulling mode) to 8 (maximum speed). That way you always know which speed work the best for your routines, so you are not blindly applying more speed than what you really need.
- Fast and easy thread refill: with Joao unique method in case of a thread breakage refilling a spool takes under a minute, and no difficult to do knots are used in the process.
- The Gravity Reel has two built-in magnets so you can attach it anywhere. Also, thanks to its small size it fits inside a small leather wallet or any card case, so it's hidden in plain sight and not attached to the performer. This allows for total freedom (and new effects).
- 90% less breakage than the traditional Reel thanks to the way the reel is designed.
- Internal Memory Module: you can record and play up to 3 different programs, so that you don't need erase one program each time you wish to perform a different routine. Also, once you save them you can leave the remote at home since the reel has an internal memory. This means that you can play any program by simply pushing a button in the side of the reel.
- VIR technology: if you have other creations from João Miranda you know how important this feature is for the working professional.
VIR stands for "Vibrations in Remote" which means that your gravity controller AND reel vibrate once you start a program, when a program finishes playing, or even when you push ANY button during a recording. This way you KNOW that the buttons were in fact pressed and the action accomplished.
- Rechargeable batteries: Both the controller and Reel have internal batteries that last for dozens of performances before they need to be charged again. There is a "Low Battery" indicator in both the controller and Reel, so you always know when it's time to charge.

I’m so looking forward to watching you perform the demo of gravity once your ready and create your routine. Thanks so much for getting us the Craig Petty deal from Tom! I’m very curious how strong the thread is. And how often it breaks. I’ve had so many bad experiences in the past with invisible thread during a live performance.

My guess is that anyone interesting in buying and using this will already have experience with IT, including dealing with mundane problems that arise the standard technology (breakages etc.). Would it remotely make sense for someone to leap straight from Loops to Gravity, i.e. skipping the steps involving products that stand in between? Is it silly to try to program Gravity without experience with the programmable devices that Craig mentions? Many effects would require plenty of prior experience with standard routines: it's not a self-working device... However, some effects (dragging) might not need much prior experience. Thoughts on the learning curve? Or is this a tool for experienced professionals only?
@magic-tv
@magic-tv 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think this device makes thread work accessible to everyone and anyone. The instructions are crystal clear and no stone is left unturned. It means that anyone can use it if they put in the required practice.

I ordered cube in bottle and can’t wait til they ship next week, but my issues with this, besides the price, is while you say this great and easy to use, you don’t have a demo for us, which truly makes me question how easy it actually is to use (and use well). I worry that a recorded routine may be a pain to try to be in sync with too.

@@ofrmagic The set up for the reel is quite practical. It won’t take long at all. The gravity ring is literally the most difficult effect taught. The hook up only takes a few seconds, but without giving anything away too much it uses the recording Tom mentioned and that is going to take a good amount of time. How long it’ll take probably varies from person to person, but once it’s recorded, it’s set up for life. Just press play. Hope that helps 🙂

I tried to contact wright but he never got back to me. BIG FAN of both creators and I would've GLADLY given them permission. I did hear though that they gave me credit (I appreciate that mates) but ASKING for permission is not the same. lastly, I have footage of me sharing RING SLIDE in my magic castle lecture performing it for Terry Lunceford and he was the KING of RING ON WAND using thread. And he said it was the BEST version of his original that he published back in the 70's. We also got THE BRILLIANT John Le Claire to endorse it before he passed.

@@douglasoverholt1463 With this thread system, once you run out you’re going to have to rethread it yourself. By doing it this way, you learn to do it yourself upfront. Other systems you have to by refills specially designed for them and only them (similar to how certain guns take certain clips/mags) that already come with the thread on them, like the spider Pen or Scorpion reels. Each of those special refills cost about $20 each and have a lot less thread than what the gravity reel comes with. Though I understand your frustration and had trouble spooling my reel at first too. If you reach out to the Facebook group or Tom, they should be able to help.
