Thank you for this video. I was researching rust converters to learn what the actual active ingredients are, so I wouldn't end up paying for an assortment of inert ingredients that seem to be present to justify a ridiculously high retail price to consumers. At first it seemed to good to think that just some phosphoric acid & glycerin gel would be sufficient, but then I saw some honest diy presentations like yours that confirmed the simple chemistry involved & the low price for raw ingredients. This is the internet at its best! DiY'ers sharing their experience and saving the rest of us from high prices for simple chemical mixtures. I really appreciate your presentation & suggestions.

I can't thank you enough for sharing this with us. As a 74 year old man on social security I did not know how I could afford to get rid of the rust that had been running rampant on my 1979 jeep under carriage since moving to Michigan 3 years ago. The commercial products they market is way out of my price range . I found a gallon of Klean Strip concrete and metal prep at home depot for less than $20.00 and a hand sanitizer with ethyl alcohol for $6.00 at the dollar store. This worked so well I am surprised. A big percentage of vehicles here are being consumed by rust , keeping it from happening to my jeep was a concern. THANK YOU!!!

Hi from Ontario .Once you get rust of your frame and painted and dry spray entire chassis frame rockers doors and all inner panels brake lines with oil missing nothing . You have to do the oiling yearly or more . Good luck been doing this for years on my old cars and trucks .I even pull up my carpets and coat floor pan and drill 1/2 inch holes in areas that i cant access. Make sure to spray inside of the frame as they rust from inside badly just coat it

I believe the gel-substance in the hand sanitizer is made by adding around 1-2 % Glycerol/Glycerin. As a nurse, I use a lot of hand sanitizer, and the ones with glycerol really makes the rubbing alcohol stick to your hands, so no wonder it make the phosphoric acid stick to the metal.. Great job..!!

Here is a bit of advice to the first timers here not overly familiar with the rust monster. Don’t expect this to effectively deal with flaky rust. You know that kind of stuff I mean it has a physical raised appearance and is loose. You’ve got a knock that stuff off, preferably using high speed grinder and wire wheel for time-saving. Once you get all that flake off, then you’re all set for the treatment. Another method that I love to get rid of flake is using a blunt to point tip on an pneumatic air chisel. You don’t cut with it but let it bounce on that flake. I guarantee it will take it off far better than the Ingersoll, rand air chisel that I don’t use anymore. Besides, a cheap air chisel works just as well. as a good one for this 👍🏻

@@StormyJoe1999I have a 92 F-250 that had heavy flaking rust on it and that would not do it unless I used the needle scaler, then I used the wire brush on a drill. On the large areas it was a wire cup brush and on the smaller areas I used a end wire brush on a drill bit extension attached to my small air grinder. After that I washed it down with Simple Green cleaner and water then I rinsed it with mineral spirits and painted it with Rust-Oleum implement primer and paint. After a short time it actually started bleeding through from the heavy paint coat but what I plan to do is use fluid film over the whole surface. It is lanolin based, which will actually replace any moisture in the rust and any paint that had pinholes or areas the paint did not cover. By the way fluid film or a product by blaster will last one to two years depending on the driving conditions and where you live. Those that use it consistently have had almost no rust.

@@justahandchannel I've done the same thing - using the Kleanstrip concrete and metal prep from HD - very cheap compared to the "brand" car rust converters! I had two local mechanics refuse my chassis - three years ago or 50K miles ago. I did get a chassis repair kit welded on by a farm mechanic business - otherwise just scraping rust off with metal wheel brush, phosphoric acid and epoxy paint and then cosmoline paraffin wax. I used a camera to see inside the chassis - spray phosphoric acid to treat in there. The chassis seems much improved. Still working on it - since I didn't get epoxy paint on till this year. The ONLY epoxy spray paint sold at our home improvement store is for metal appliances - kind of like the phosphoric acid work around. hahaha. Epoxy paint is so much better than enamel paint - to keep the salt water from penetrating. thanks

Just an update from my end. It's not quite spring yet, but we have nice days here and there. Today is okay, very sunny and dry. So, I went out with my mixture of this stuff (I used Krud Kutter, mixed with hand sanitizer) and sprayed some on a few spots of my utility trailer and the rear frame rails of my Jeep Wrangler. I don't have the primer or any paint that I'd use afterward, so this is a test. It's doing what you've shown. On my Jeep where I sprayed, it has that white milky look after about an hour. The trailer looks more like the spots are very silver (bare metal) and no white haze.
@justahandchannel
@justahandchannel 9 ай бұрын
The white haze is normal. It's just from the chemical Drying on the metal. You could try a blow gun next time and blow it off after spraying
@turn-n-burn1421

@@justahandchannel I was aware of that haze, because you'd mentioned it in at least one of the videos. I was just kinda confirming that it was doing that. It didn't matter that day anyway. We're in that weather pattern coming into spring, where it bounces back and forth. It'd been sunny and dry for a couple of days and I just wanted to experiment. I still have to get the primer before I actually do it properly. I sprayed it on a few things outside besides my Jeep chassis; also a utility trailer and something I've forgotten.

I'm actually building an AMC 360 out of an 87 Grand Wagoneer (Fullsize) to put in my WJ. I also have an AMC Eagle wagon with the 4.2L six in it. I'm gonna take the crank out of the 4.2 and use it to make a 4.5L out of the 4.0L and put it, the 42RE tranny and all the fuel injection from the WJ into the Eagle. Modernize it. Then the 360 will get a fuel injection throttle body on a 4-bbl manifold, mated to a 46RE tranny, for the WJ. Retro-mod like.

@@justahandchanneltell me about it. My buddy and I spent the last four years restoring his 67 charger. He did the stripping on the body down to the bare metal and took her to a body and paint man, that had actually had cars at SEMA, finish the body and paint the outside of the car. After that he got it back and we went to put new carpet in it and the floorboards were bad as a result of an open rear window in a Colorado field. So I welded in new floorboards and we completely rewired it from front to back and had to reinstall all the lights and other accessories. He took the seats to someone that did an awesome job recovering. After 2 years of completing the interior and going online hunting for all the missing trim pieces and replacement window and interior trim parts and accessories. He finally got the car on the road 2 years ago at the end of the summer and won four trophies. Unfortunately this past year his engine was starting to act up as a result of sitting for the years prior to restoration. He thought it was carburetion and invested it into a fuel injection system which he had intended anyway. He just got his engine back and in a couple months, will be installing it to be ready for next summer. Hopefully he is done with the major work but even with all of our free labor the car almost put him in the poor house. He has had this car since he was just out of high school and he is now 60. He always dreamed of getting this car back on the road and hopefully this year, he will be done with the majority of the restoration. The car is beautiful and definitely a labor of love.

I'm assuming it's a Chevy by the description of the rust 😆 this method alone will not fix the vehicle. It can be used as part of the process. Sand/grind the affected area to remove all the loose paint and rust. Then treat it with the spray. After 24 hours, spray epoxy primer, body fill, sand then seal with another coat of epoxy. Then you are ready for final prep and paint.

@@justahandchannel sure, I don’t want to remove the axles from the jeep as it’s a daily driver for me! I would need some dwell time and me living in Arizona it’s a dry climate and nothing stays wet for long. This Jeep was originally from a little more wet region and was used to get around in snow conditions on occasion so it’s not really bad as far as rust goes, more of a surface than crusty rust. A “gel solution” would stay wet for a longer period of time allowing a longer dwell time without drying out and having to re-apply. Hope this makes sense? Thank you for the reply!
@justahandchannel

It's not necessary for it to dwell. Just spray it on and hours later it will look good. Unless you're going to paint it, the surface rust will return eventually. Much slower where you are.

It's moving freely now. These Weber carbs have sealed bearings on either end of the shaft, the problem wasn't with the bearings but the center of the shaft where it passes through the base of the carb. Can You Paint Over Self Etching Primer? Self Etching primer can in fact be painted over but you need to closely follow the manufacturers application and top coat guide. As a rule of thumb Self Etching Primers need another coat of primer over them to fully seal everything up long term. We suggest using a Urethane Primer over the self etching primer as a barrier between the self etching primer (Do not use Epoxy over Self Etch). Urethane primer can be top coated with most coatings so you will immediately eliminate any worries of adhesion issues with your top coat.

Thanks @justahandchannel for researching an inexpensive rust converter 👍😃 Not every Tractor Supply has it, but I was able to find milkstone remover $22 and used it full strength along with some cheap $2 hand sanitizer to rust convert my truck's trailer hitch receiver, some bolts and garden tools. But I do have questions about a white residue or precipitate I was seeing. For the trailer hitch receiver, I wire brushed inside/outside. Then sprayed and let it marinate and dry overnight. It worked well and turned the rusty metal blackish. But the next day, I also noticed inside the hitch receiver, where most of the spray landed on the flat interior surface, patches of hard white preciptate/residue leftover. The white residue was pretty tough, but it could be scraped off with one's finger nail or with a wire brush along with a little more spray and a rag to remove any excess. I think this white residue must be removed before any painting can be done? Not sure. Anyone know if the white residue left behind is dried phosphoric acid or is it a precipitate from the phosphoric acid / rusty metal reaction? I noticed that once the white residue was removed, underneath it the hitch receiver had been etched right down to bare shiny metal. So I wonder if I used/sprayed too much? I was also rinsing with a garden hose, wire brushing and respraying a little. Too much water? Anyone know what this white residue is and maybe how to best avoid it? I also treated some Subaru Outback headlight assembly retaining bolts, 14 of them. "Headlamp Assembly Bolt - Subaru (57737GA290)" as a few were a little rusty, but most not too bad. These are steel and appear to have some kind of black (paint? oxide?) coating on them (I assume it's paint, since they are steel it cannot be anodized, but maybe it is some other coating?). Anyway, the spray "full strength" removed that black coating down to bare/gray metal which I did not expect. In this case they came out gray with white residue spots. I ended up brass brushing, respraying and wiping them down to remove a white residue. I have since repainted them with black appliance enamel and they look great. Maybe I should have diluted down the phosphoric acid in this case. So for some purposes one might want to test this mixture beforehand. I'm also going to trying it on the Subaru's front end frame after I use a needle gun to remove any flakey rust (mostly near the frame welds). The factory frame paint looks to be more robust (epoxy?). I will repaint it alll with TS oil based Farm Implement paint with their cyanoacrylate hardener, as this has lasted on another vehicle I did prevously. Finally, the spray did a great job on a crusty / rusty steel 8"x8" hand tamper... I used a needle gun to clean it up first. The tamper was previously leaving rust stains on the concrete floor, but no more, now the rust on it is all converted and has a protective black coating. Garden shovels and tools are next...
@justahandchannel

The white residue is from moisture. It doesn't affect paint other than it won't be a smooth surface. If you spray too much on, you can just wipe it lightly after spraying and that will keep it smooth. Wire brush will also remove the residue. Hope this helps!!

@@justahandchannel - Hey thats super super nice for fast reply - wow - exited thx!!! - MV Unicorn btw from US SC - so I poured 85% phos acid into a professional spray bottle similar to yours about 3/4 full then I squirted the hand sanitizer ethyl alc based into it a good chunk lets call it a 5th of spray bottle - I shook it and it turned slightly yellow. - then I squirted it on my prepped steel swim platform which has 90% epoxy paint coverage and 10% rust spots. It turned rust from orange to steel withing few hours but had a huge light oily coverage everywhere - this morning it was morning dew over it and some crusty cristal spots everywhere otherwise felt good. I pressure washed it but seems the crusty cristals I have to loosen with brush and wash again before putting epoxy primer on? Did I do anything wrong? Happy to learn from you thx JusAHand!!!!!

It sounds like you possibly put too much ethyl alcohol. It should be around a 19 to 1 mix. Other than that i don't know why you have an oily film. Is it possible there is oil on the metal already?

@@justahandchannel - agree think my mixture ratio is way off - the 85% phos acis have to check but I bet its oily almost like machine oil - the steel platform was dry to the bone before spaying stuff on so must come from phos acid - it seems to dry but its just too much I sprayed - the platform is horizontal so not much drains off and just stays on it. Should I dilute with water next time to bring ratio down - Less sanitizer? thanks so much for engaging with me!

Try to get the mixture close to what i suggested. I would suggest using a blow gun or even a rag to get the excess liquid off. Where did you buy the acid? Deluting will not fix your issue

Do you need to do anything with the surface afterwards mate before you paint it?

Just do your regular bodywork if it's a body part or otherwise just epoxy and paint

Can I use this on an old car body? We bought new fenders and hood for my 72 chevelle and we sprayed rattle can primer on it years ago but it didn't last now the fenders have surface rust all over them.
@justahandchannel
@justahandchannel Жыл бұрын
Yes of course you can use it on that. I would also recommend sending that primer off and getting epoxy on the bare metal

Is the had sanitizer added to thicken the solution, or is the alcohol doing something for it?
@justahandchannel
@justahandchannel 10 ай бұрын
Hand sanitizer is not relevant to the solution. Ethyl alcohol is. I just used hand sanitizer because it was handy and contains Ethyl. Ethyl alcohol cleans and acts as a solvent for the mixture

I've used several name brands. Phosphoric acid is the same regardless of what brand it is. The only difference is the concentration

Do you have to grind off the metal bfore spray? Or just spray and it the solvent do its work?
@justahandchannel
@justahandchannel 8 ай бұрын
Not If it's clean metal like the one in the video. If it's really flaky, or it has lots of paint and stuff on it, then I would suggest using a needle scalar or dull air chisel to get all the loose stuff off. Unless we're talking about body metal, which in that case, I would just sand or use paint stripper.

I have some rust developing on some chrome lug nuts. Do I need to remove the lug nuts from each wheel? The wheels are some sort of painted alloy. Is your mix save for chrome?
@justahandchannel
@justahandchannel Жыл бұрын
I've used it on chrome with ok results. I only leave it on for a few minutes then rinse with water. I would not recommend doing it on the car. It will stain the finish on your wheels

Cool, just a question. Is there supposed to be a thermal reaction? Mine just got pretty warm. Thanks

When you sprayed it?
@orvallhall324
@orvallhall324 10 ай бұрын
No. Right after I added the 12oz of 85% phosphoric acid to 5oz of water then added 5oz of methyl alcohol. The plastic spray bottle got rather warm.
@justahandchannel
@justahandchannel 10 ай бұрын
The bottle can get warm with that strength of acid. 12 + 5 =17. You should have added less than 1 once of ethyl alcohol to it. For 20 parts of diluted acid, add 1 part ethyl. It's probably not a problem to use it, but that much alcohol is not necessary.

It will prevent it from rusting for awhile but if you want it to last forever, use a good epoxy primer
