Magic the Gathering 1994 Revised Starter Deck

Day Three of the Birthday Bonanza! Every year during the week of my birthday we will be opening some awesome throwbacks to relive things I got or wish I had gotten for my birthday as a kid!
We're opening crazy throwback today, from 30 years ago, an unopened Revised Edition Starter Deck!!!
Maybe we'll pull a dual land? What old school awesomeness will we open?

I have the same nostalgia, I bought many of those back in 94/95. Great memories and yes, great times! I used to keep all my decks in revised starter boxes, back when sleeves/deck boxes weren't even a thing.

@steelzepplin2012 I remember playing in penny sleeves for my baseball cards! I didn't like it when my cards would get grit and sand in between them and my friends thought it was weird! I kept my decks wrapped up in newspaper with a rubber band so my mom wouldn't see them and take them away. 😄 I still have some of my old cards in those old baseball card sleeves! Well, the ones that survived the fire and I didn't use much. Great memories and good times!

I really wish they would bring back started decks and only 3 sets a year so you have all year to build that starter deck and once the new year starts get to do it all over

@waltergriffith4368 I do too. They made sealed events so much better too. The block format was just objectively better from a design and narrative perspective.

Yes! This was the best way to release cards and make strategies in constructed, and block set tourneys were fun too.

back in 94/95 i bought my first starter and pulled a Tropical Island which to me was "soooo boring". A more experienced player got it from me with a pile of ugh Fallen Empires cards that my newbie eyes just couldn't pass up 🤣

@cardfloppwr3307 Oof, that is rough. I remember trading a friend a Necropotence for a playset of Tundras in 1996, I still feel kinda bad about it. To be fair, it was a relatively even trade at the time. 😅

Aaah, the nostalgia. Mahamoti Djinn pulled 30 years ago: epic! Pulled in 2024, err, not so great anymore. But still nice 🙂 Happy Birthday! Edit: Order in Revised Starters is: Uncommons until the Rulebook (Forest was uncommon Forest! trick you into believing Lands are first, which they are in 4th Edition Starters), then 3 Rare, then Commons.

I started playing in 1994 and I really enjoyed it 3 sets ayear and had time to build a deck and actually enjoy playing with something that you put together your own now we get 3 sets a month it's all about the money these days

@jonathanparsons4557 Agreed! Sets need time and room to breath, but the way Hasbro is shoveling everything out is suffocating players and exhausting their wallets. When I started playing in 1993 I wanted to play Magic every day, and I was thrilled when I would get the opportunity. Now, I barely get the chance to play once or twice a week, but I'm so exhausted from new releases, the constant hype train, and the mountains of text on each card that it's hard to get excited about playing. 😭 I miss the joy that Magic used to bring, before greed stifled it.

@johnnyfresh5798 IT IS! I really appreciate and respect Thor and the community he has built. We've run in similar circles for a long time, and share similar outlooks on many subjects. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe we've run into each other in passing a few times.

You could always sponsor a video too! 😉 Video sponsors get a shout out and their cards are returned to them organized, and with anything over $1 sleeved in a standard penny sleeve, and anything over $100 double sleeved in a top loader.

These were the packs we were buying back in 1994. I think they cost about $7-8. Boosters were $2.99. Still have all my cards, including 26 dual lands and a beta Mox Jet (bought as a single for $45)

@tas2583 Boosters were 2.49 in 1994 where I was buying them, Starter decks were 7.95 . They didn't get up to 3 (well 2.95) until after Ice Age. I still have my beta power that I got playing for ante! 😄 Great times and even better memories!

when MTG was truly something special, and not well known like it is today, also had the best artwork back in the day. Arabian Nights and The Dark were my favorite artwork from the fist expansions.

@steelzepplin2012 it's still special, and they can't take our memories! We're just relics of another time. 😄 I recently showed a friend that is a newer player some of my old photocopies of set lists and handwritten deck lists from the 90s. They said it was like hearing stories about "the olden times” from an elder wizard 😂

@D0012D13 I went in fully knowing that I was unlikely to break even, let alone come out ahead. The fun is the journey, and the friends we meet along the way, not just the destination. 😄 What are the chances that we would have had this interaction if I hadn't opened it? Also, it must have entertained someone, because out of over 2000 videos across more than a year and a half, this is currently the most viewed video on the channel. 😂

@D0012D13 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😂 I've spent way more money doing much stupider things than making the most successful video my channel has had to date, all while having a great time, and enjoying some nostalgia. Entertainment value is still value in my mind, if that's biases and cope, then I guess it's biases and cope. 🤣
