My Odin in Conquest was shit for a while and became good kind of 'all of a sudden.' Something about those all-stats up levelups where a mage isn't normally going to get gains in HP and Defense and those core beef stats. Nosferatu tomes might appear to suck but it's really nice when they don't break. And he has the second coolest personal skill in the game!

I completely agree with your assessment, he is overall a pretty average unit and with shakey growths, you and he have to work harder to get recognized compared to natural talent like Nino and his own teacher Pent. For Ricken's case, there was one Awakening LTC run that used him a lot because of, you guessed it, his superior Rescue Staff potential. His bases being overall nice makes him better suited for the job than Miriel, even if he joins like 2 chapters later. All his reclasses are physical, so stick to his base classes unless you wanna do some meme shit and pass Luna/Aegis over lmao.

For the lowest demand tier list; Early Archers! Anyway, one downside to consider with Lorenz is that his starting Reason rank is just low enough that he doesn't know any magic to begin with. It's a quick fix, but he doesn't get to start magicking it up right away, unlike Hubert and Lindhart.

I feel that's a bit of a funny concept, because "the game they're in" also includes their availability. Like, if you dropped Athos into map 1 of Shadow Dragon, then obviously he'd be busted, but that doesn't really seem fair, so would he be going in the final map, replacing Gotoh? Then again, it could also just mean every footlocked character in Genealogy. When friggin' "my Speed stat literally causes overflow errors" Ced tends to be an arguable choice, you know a game is a bit hard on mountwank.

@@misterbadguy7325 As someone who's played Genealogy a lot(not speedruns because.... its FE4), there's still a LOT of use for foot units, especially gen 1 with so much back tracking and roaming across the map, you can station your foot units who've fallen behind at junctions that'll open up later, so that they don't need to backtrack halfway across the map, like your mounties. Plus, in gen 2, you kinda need Ced(especially Lewyn-Ced) and Shanan against some of the broken bosses that show up before Seliph is ready to promote.

Fun fact about Ricken, I believe he's the only gen 1 starting Mage that can't go down the Dark Mage class, him and Henry actually have a DLC conversation about that. Honestly Odin isn't god awful, he's a meme character but I've found some actual use for him as a Nosferatu tank and a high crit unit thanks to Aching Blood, he's in my opinion better than Nyx just because he doesn't die in two rounds of combat when trained, since Magic is kind of eh in Fates, Leo comes in with good bases anyway and Nyx has a great growth and base Magic it meant that Odin was able to use the early game Spirit Dust and alongside some good level ups was one of my strongest units in my Hard mode playthrough. He's also a great Samurai but this was about Mages.

While I am not a fan of turning him into Samurai (its a huge meme, his atk isn't that much better going physical), outside of later on to grab some skills from level ups, I too found him immensely useful for Lunatic play-through with how well he could tank through some really annoying enemy traps through both early and mid game of Conquest. Conquest gets access to so many good tomes too that synergize with him, from stuff Nos and Mojolnir that's native to stuff like horse spirit in his daughters' chapter. Edit: Oh yeah, I disagree with magic being bad in Fates. I think it's more that you don't get a traditionally strong base-class mage like you do in other FE games while also Fates keeping a check on mages with the whole second triangle.

Yeah, Odin was one of my main tanks, his resistance and defense were both really high (for a parent unit anyway). That being said, magic IS bad in Conquest specifically. Like every Hoshidan unit (the ones you're fighting for a vast majority of the game) have pretty high resistance.

Hikki Gamer When people talk about Magic in Fates, it’s more along the lines of magic suffering the most from how weapons in Fates work. Fire can’t crit at all. Meaning anyone with E magic has to wait for D before they can. (Though this is everyone who’s weapons starts at E) Thunder is decent from what I remember. I think it’s the best normal magic spell in the game. (Which means excluding My Castle weapons and the S-Rank tome) Fimbulvetr is decreases speed, which is pretty bad since Fates mages really rely on their speed stat. Lightning halves your magic every other turn, which sucks considering the physical brave weapons don’t do that. Mjölnir is good because of the buff to killer weapons. But you have to keep in mind it hurts your evasion by 10 points. Nosferatu sucks. No doubling, no skills, no crits, and -20 evasion. Just don’t use it. It is pretty much never worth it. The Scrolls are all very gimmicky and the only two that are worth it are the Horse Spirit and the Calamity (Reaver) spell. This alone isn’t the only thing though. Fates is the game with the highest amount of Anti-Mage units in the series so far. Falcon Knights. Master Ninjas. Kitsune. Priestess. Malig Knight. Adventurer. Dark Knight. Maids/Butlers. All this combined makes it so mages in Fates are, imo, even worse than they are in Radiant Dawn. At least in RD they could always have their skills activate no matter the weapon they used. At least their tomes didn’t have gimmicks that neuter their offense. You could argue weapon weight but in RD that really only applies to two mages. The rest have the Str base/growth to circumvent it.

I would bump Boey up to C Tier, next to Erk. While their utility is pretty different, I find Boey very valuable as the only non-villager magic user in Echoes who can reliably take a hit (Tobin and Faye can become decently tanky with luck). His Res, while not as high as Mae and Genny, is serviceable, and his Def is pretty decent. He will generally have around the same Def as Saber, and if you're lucky, he can even surpass him. Sure, Valbar joins pretty soon, and Kamui isn't frail either, but Boey has 1-3 range. Not to forget Boey also has pretty good HP, increasing his survivability.

I agree wholeheartedly. Perhaps I am biased, but my Boey ended up being my literal tank, surpassing Valbar due to higher mov, speed, and damage output with impressive defense for a mage (this was on the hardest difficulty for the game at the time, to boot. note: don't know if a harder difficulty was added later or not). But yeah, Boey is no joke. Mae was generally better, but they worked so excellently as a pair that it didn't even matter that Boey was almost always lagging behind her. Add the fact that he could actually soak physical damage, he was actually able to push while Mae could not, allowing Mae to safely destroy from behind.

My favorite thing about Lorenz is how he’s surprisingly tanky. I don’t know why they made his hp growth so high, but it’s hilarious and very useful. He can tank several hits, while nuking enemies with Ragnarok, and can draw attention from ballistas. Additionally, when snipers attack him, he can usually tank the hit and counter bc Thyrsus. At first I thought he was a meme character, but I was so surprised when he became the saving grace of my golden deer run on multiple occasions.

Because if a character seems more fit for a master class like Dark Knight than the class they appear as when they’re an enemy, you may have to take into account when they are fought. For example, Sylvain seems like he’s obviously a canon Dark Knight, but he appears as a Paladin in the Battle of the Eagle and Lion, because there aren’t any fully promoted units there, so you can’t really say his canon class is Paladin, that’s just part of the class progression he naturally goes down

After working a lot to perfect a fe8 iron man. I have found it is very important to put a lot of exp into mages early game. They are the most powerful late game besides fliers. But if you play it right, you can avoid using robes on them and save that for healers or early game frail fliers. But Arthur and Lute are insanely powerful after promotion. The light magic and best resistance for Arthur with a C staff on promotion. And with lute having movement of 8 I think it is and extremely high speed. Too good with bolting for sure.

When I played Thracia last year I was so amazed by Asvel. He was so strong even without Grafcalibur. And when I got the Vantage Scroll it just reached such a whole new Level of awesomenes.

Really nice tier list. Asbel literally felt like a drug for me to use when I played Thracia blind, and I don't think I've ever had this much fun using a mage before. I remember in 8x where no one on my team could even land a hit on Gomez and he just proceeded to one round him, then there was Chapter 22, probably the most intimidating chapter I've ever played and he made Reinhardt looked easy.

My personal edits to the tier list: Odin at the bottom of C. With a defensive pair up and an HP Tonic, he can Nos tank in Conquest 10 very well, even on Lunatic. He does decent magic damage for a time, and then gains utility if you reclass and promote him at level 10 to a sword master, where he will perform decent for a time and then serve as a great speed booster for Leo in the mid and late game. Also he sires one of the strongest kids, though you didnt give that to Lewyn so idk about giving that to Odin. Ricken below FE10 Soren. Ricken is definitely the worst mage in FE13, mostly because compared to every other mage he takes the longest to get doubling even armored enemies in Lunatic. He has a decent class set (cav and archer I think) for skill inheritance but his modifiers dont help the people who want those classes.

Yep, backing this up for Odin. Granted Conquest doesn't really have bad characters the way some other FE games do, but even considering that he does have a viable niche in the mid game with nosferatu tanking. And I'm always a proponent of easy heartseeker users considering accuracy is a thing you do need to watch to play safely and reliably in Conquest. Didn't get much use out of vantage/nosferatu despite seeming wonderful, but I still feel like there's a use there too. C seems right to me. At the very least I've found more of a use for him than Erk, even factoring in Lyn mode. And I don't even think Erk is bad either. Revelations Odin is crap of course, one of the worst characters in the game, but I assume any ranking of him is talking about Conquest or Awakening and not that garbage.

​@@etoil5687 Ricken's class selection is terrible. In FE13, getting lots of levels is important, and reclassing him to any tier 1 will make him atrocious for the rest of the game. Sages are good, so that helps, but Miriel can easily have a level lead over Ricken, and if she wants to skip ahead to Sage, it's easier for her. Miriel is solid, and can even be helpful in Luna+. She can get useful skills as either a Troubadour (Demoiselle) or a Dark Mage (Anathema). She can't really Nosferatu tank in any difficulty other than normal, so she's best late-game as a Sage/Valkyrie. Both units will hit wyverns hard with a forged wind tome. In Luna+, I had Miriel one-shotting wyverns in most of the early chapters; I'm sure Ricken could do the same thing. Both units will also die quickly if they get attacked; Miriel gets one-shot, Ricken gets doubled. Miriel is around for the hardest chapters in the game, and her chip damage is accurate and powerful; this is very appreciated on chapters 2 and 3. Ricken joins at a point were a forged Elwind tome is incredibly useful; if Miriel hasn't gotten to D rank yet, that's the time to drop her. Otherwise, she outclasses him for the rest of the game.

Wade 2.0 Even in Eliwood mode it’s true. The big open field map where you get Erk, the Caelin outskirts map and then the Caelin castle map where you get Lucius. There’s a defence chapter in the middle of that if you’re playing Hector mode but chapter 6/20-ish is still pretty early.

The herons and fe4 dancers are obviously better because they can dance for multiple people. Azura has extremely high availability, and Lara can also steal and pick locks. Then there are units like Tethys, who i never found quite as useful as other dancers, but i can't really put my finger on why.

I disagree with Lewyn's placement solely because he's the best unit to bait Eldigan and the cross knights in chapter 3. Throw him in a nearby forest and the cross knights won't hit him at all and their low res makes them easy to kill. This is very easy to do as well since this takes place almost right outside of the home castle. And since it's so close to the home castle, it would be easy to dance Lachesis to talk to Eldigan using this method. I also think he's very useful in chapter 5 but I don't want to make this comment too long. Considering the fact that FE4 only has 12 chapters including the prologue, being able to make one chapter significantly easier is a big deal imo.

Lewyn is easily the best combat unit in gen 1 and contrary to popular opinion, that makes a significant difference in difficult battles(such as the cross knights as you mentioned). And he makes Reptor a freaking joke, whereas Sigurd has to trudge along with 1-2 move through the desert and lacks good 2 range. He deserves at least a B tier IMO. He moves across the desert faster than Sigurd and is the best candidate for the Pursuit ring, seriously, no one makes use of it as much as Lewyn. He clears the Arena easily, has access to lots of villages in Ch2, he easily affords 40k gold for the Pursuit ring.

If Maniac mode is assumed and the crit forge glitch is used, FE9 Soren could easily get bumped to A. Once his speed starts to pick up (or with an Adept proc), he can easily one round many enemies or at least heavily weaken them for other units, and he's the best at abusing the glitch because he always counters. Give him Vantage and an Ike support he can easily clear out entire squads on his own even on enemy phase. With the sheer enemy numbers in that mode, having a glass cannon that can cut through their obscene bulk is super handy. He's held back from not having a mount and having lower mov than other foot units, but he at least has staff utility whenever he has nothing better to do, and his offense will always be useful.

Tbh I’d probably put Linhardt higher cause of spell availability early game all the way to late game. As for Lugh, I think I could be higher, he’s one of the better mages you get and he’s there from chapter 3 on. He’s also a solid staff user once you promote him (outclasses Lilina imo)

On the other hand, in every playthrough of PoR I've done, Oscar has been complete garbage no matter how much attention I give him. I guess I have a gift when it comes to RNG.

Fe 3 book 2 Gordon is actually really good mostly because he is 4 levels from sniper promotion which gives him insane bonuses and 7 mov, star shards can boost his growth and bows are immediately useful due to the early maps throwing lots of wyvern knights at you that your other characters can't hurt besides Aran. Might be A just for that.

except it's not, bases and levels till promotions are everything in Book 2. Ryan needs 5 more levels till he can promote compare to Gordon and his stat growth advantages are offset by Gordon's better bases, quicker promotion time and shards which can give every character in Book 2 overtuned stat growths which is why character's starting bases, classes, availability and unique qualities like the ability to use excalibur are the most valuable traits. Now that being said while I think Ryan's use is generally worse then Gordon's due to needing more exp investment to promote that I rather put into other characters Ryan is still quite helpful and viable especially early on because Gordon can't take on all the Dragon riders himself and Warren needs to be recruited first on the map you need bowmen the most and Warren well is the worst bow user in book 2 and huntsmen's promotion to a mount means a lot less in book 2 the book 1 and is generally inferior to sniper. While many people simple use Ryan and drop him for Jeorge later there is also no big reason to stop you from using Ryan either. He gets a support bonus with his brother which is rare in Fe3 and his growths are good and with shards you can basically guarantee stat up in his vital stats every level something the other archers/snipers can't do because Gordon's growths are meh and Jeorge's are nonexistent without shards meaning if you do a little early game feeding (favoritism the word vets never like) Ryan can be pretty freaking dumb really fast. I would likely use Ryan before the huntsmem because huntsmen are just not as good this time due to early access to sniper promotion and maps being less horse friendly. Furthermore besides dealing with early game dragon riders you also have winged dragons to deal with and range physical attacks outside of bows are pretty bad making bows valuable all game Another often not talk about thing is that you get the best bow early in book 2 and Gordon has a high weapon level growth rate the only stat he beats Ryan in though Ryan has a decent one as well. Jeorge can use at base for obvious reason. Overall book 2 has some of the best characters in the archer class and both Gordon and Ryan are way better then many other early game archers including book 1 Gordon.

Lorenz is amazing on maddening with the dark mage skill, he can chip with his attack then chip for an extra 9 to 14 with poison strike and leave a bunch of pesky enemies at 1 hp.

@@SSBBPOKEFAN The main problem with Lorenz is that he's outclassed by most characters in 3H and without the Thyrsus staff he's basically useless since his tankiness drops very hard. He's also outclassed in Dark Knight by Sylvain (You could also make Hubert and Lysethia dark knights, but that's much harder) and his best class is gotten near the end of the game since it's a master class. Lorenz isn't really a bad unit it's just that since there are so many great units in 3H Lorenz isn't as useful, I'd probably rate him C tier between Erk and Lugh

In my experience he’s terrible at combat, but he’s also pretty useful for being one of the only non-Marcus units who don’t just waste their time on armor knights. Since archers suck, he’s the only one reliably hitting at 2 range until you get Lilina. I’m still really new to Binding Blade, but I think that he deserves a spot on the team in early game, and if you get lucky, he could continue being useful for even longer. In FE6, there really aren’t any mages that can easily replace him as soon as they join.

7:11 You were wrong ab this part, Mekkah. Agree that Merric in FE12 joins much much later than FE11 because he joins you in chapter 10. But in FE12, Merric levels up extremely fast. Because Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 are his shows, (especially Chapter 11 when he can move normally in desert) he can one-shot every single flying dragon on the map even at his base and on Lunatic /LReverse (which gives him 1lv per kill). And if you have trained him 1-2 levels in Paralogues, he may even be the first one to promote on your team To me, Merric is the most well-rounded mage in FE11, FE12. Because Linde is lack of durability. Elrean is lack of speed, resistance. Wendell is just lack of growths. And because YOU NEED HIM in Ch.11, Ch.12 on Lunatic because flying dragons are everywhere. I'm biased as hell, but I love using lugh in fe6 runs. He starts off slow, but his speed is really great, and with how accurate the fire tome is, I almost always use him from start to finish

Lucky... My Lugh tended to be decently fast, but his speed never made up for Lillina's raw power (and she sometimes doubled as well, considering speed stats for most enemies weren't that impressive anyway, even in hard mode). Throw a angelic robe on Lillina, feed her several levels to catch up the the crew, and then watch her burn through everything. Then there is Ray, who is like the only good dark user (I know Niime is actually decent and a great heal bot, but still), is also able to destroy everything in his path and can use nosferatu/luna. Easy game. But seriously, considering that only 1 mage can make use of the S rank tome, Lugh almost always ended up getting benched by late game as Lillina was always better, and even if for some reason I didn't use her (which is criminal IMO), there were too many units that deserved the spot over Lugh. I truly do love Lugh, though... his mid game is very respectable. Plus he is so crucial in hard mode for the first couple of chapters he joins in, and for chipping down those BS bosses that dodge everything and tank physical damage from almost anyone in the party.

You put Ricken in about the right spot. His base speed is pretty bad and he can't reclass to Dark Mage. Salvageable on Hard, pretty bad on Lunatic (but to be fair who isn't?). He's not doubling early on in HM, even with pair-ups, and he's getting doubled and one-rounded on Lunatic. At least he has Elwind for flier effectiveness in his joining chapter, but MU can just use that in the future. Nothing really that good about him.
