One of my fave bands. This song is off their best album imo, called Salisbury. From the same album please react to Time to Live, High Priestess, or Bird of Prey. In fact, every song on this album is a gem. The Park is a very slow tribute, and the title track Salisbury is an epic which takes up almost the whole of one side of the album.

My favorite Uriah Heep song is "Come away Melinda" from their first album. It features violin and soft horns. It's a sad song about a little girl that loses her mother in the war. but they are all good.

If you're going to do British bands, you need to do Slade. "Run Runaway" (1984) is my favorite. Slade was the first act to have three singles enter the charts at number one in UK, achieving 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones on the UK Singles Chart. According to the 1999 BBC documentary, "It's Slade", the band have sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

Classic joint. Steller storytelling wrapped up in a rock song. Bravo. BTW: Rob... Being this is Amber's bday month, the perfect romantic ballad for the occasion would be "Song For My Lady" by Jon Lucien. Whether or not you guys ever choose to review it, it will certainly make you both pay attention to its poetic, island-flavored, mad-beautiful uniqueness. I believe you will dig it, madly. Happy Born Day, Amber! Snatch JOY (& cake)! Lin

"I never found out who she was, but she helped me write the song." So said Ken Hensley, Uriah Heep's chief songwriter at the time, keyboard player and occasional acoustic guitarist, slide guitarist and co-lead singer about the girl he saw through the window, struggling against the weather and her hair literally flowng in the midwinter wind. "Lady in black" originally appeared on Uriah Heep's second album in 1971, but was completely overlooked at the time. But in 1977, the band had another predominantly acoustic single coming up, "Free me", and thought this old, similarly structured song would work well as the B-side. That's when it started, in Germany. "Free me" was a hit, but the six-year old B-side became an even bigger hit, an absolutely colossal phenomenon in Germany (this video clip was recorded for German TV at the time). From then "Lady in black" has grown and is now arguably the most popular song in the Uriah Heep catalogue, challenging their long-time biggest hit "Easy livin'" (1972) for the throne. Amazingly, Uriah Heep - one of the Big 4 of British hard rock pioneers, alongside Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath - are still going strong - well, not in the US, of course, where audiences have long since forgot the noble art of keeping up - but in Europe and the rest of the world they are still an ongoing, perennially popular concern still influencing new generations of fans and bands, especially of the hard rock persuasion. Only this year, they released their 25th studio album "Chaos & Colour" to universal fan and critical acclaim. Sadly, the only remaining original member is guitarist Mick Box - all other members of the classic lineup have crossed the rainbow bridge - but he has still successfully managed to honor the proud name of Uriah Heep, joined as he is by Canadian master singer Bernie Shaw, keyboard wizard Phil Lanzon, and the exceptional rhythm section Russell Gilbrook (drums) and Dave Rimmer (bass).

I picked up Uriah Heep (Salisbury was my introduction, but I backtracked to catch up) early in High School (Class of 74) and followed them for years, into the 80's and college after a stint in the Military. I loved the two albums from the 1977 time frame , "Firefly" and "Innocent Victim" (Which Free Me came off of). I also loved illusion off of that album. I could listen to those two albums over and over again. Of Course everybody raves about "Demons and Wizards" (rightfully so) and the Magicians Birthday, but Look at Yourself, Salisbury and their first Album were all excellent ( I own the very humble.. british album). The next four, Sweet Freedom (Loved "Stealin"), Wonderwall, Return to Fantasy and High and Mighty, were not as good as the first five studio albums (in my opinion), so I was thrilled when Firefly and Innocent Victim came out, because it felt like a return to their earlier style, even though it was Lawton and not Bryon. I bought later albums like Abominog and others, but did not feel like they were able to re-capture the sound they had in the seventies, maybe they felt like they evolved, but I missed the good old days. Still feel like they owned the seventies, and I chose them over Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, Black Sabbath, Moody Blues and Early Chicago as my favorite all time band. I think I own nearly 20 Uriah Heep Studio albums and tons of collections, Greatest Hits, Anthologies and live albums (on LP's, 8 Tracks and CD's, some on all 3)

Saw them in late 1971/early 1972 (can't remember which). They had just released their Look at Yourself album. Members were Box, Byron, Kerslake, Hensley, Clarke (drums), and Newton (bass). Had the privilege of seeing them again in 2015 with their current line-up of Box, Shaw, Lanzon, Gilbrook, and Rimmer. They have slowed down one iota and are just as good as their glory days.

Over the years Heep has a catalogue of mellow ballads that they use as a foil to their heavier rock or progressive music. Quite extraordinary ones at that Come Away Melinda, Lady in Black, If I had the Time, Illusion, The Dancer, Come Back to Me, to name a few from their Byron, then Lawton eras. I hope you continue to explore this truly legendary band.

That was Ken Hensley on lead vocals and guitar. The guy was multi-talented. He was the one laying down all of the Hammond B3 organ on their early songs, a lot of which were written by him. He also sang lead vocals on a few songs as you see here, as well as trading lead guitar duties with Mick Box. Sadly, Ken passed away in 2020.

In many ways Uriah Heep were an early heavy prog rock band from their start in the very late 60's. I think their first record came out in 1970? Their two first records mainly passed the general public by, and this song was on their second album. "Look at yourself" followed, and then there was "Demons and Wizards", and the song Easy Livin' is still popular today, even if few remember the name of the band that recorded it.

The origins of this type of music is based in old UK minstrel music. Going back 500 yesrs or more. The focus is on story telling and originally would have been performed with mandolins, drums and banging sticks, tamborines etc Fleetwood Mac used similar subject matter in Rhiannon, but of course with an updated style.

This is from the 2nd album, "Salisbury", where Ken Hensley (keyboards) started to take over the songwriting after the first album was a bit of a struggle. Hensley's other gem on this album was "The Park" and that deserves a listen, as well. (I would love for you to cover the title track…but that's 18 minutes long. I'm thrilled you did "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", but I know you're still not doing so many long songs.) Thank you for acknowledging Paul Newton's work on the bass here. So many people love the lineup from the 4th album, where Newton and Ian Clarke (drums) were replaced by Gary Thain and Lee Kerslake, respectively, but while the new players were excellent, it's not as if Newton and Clarke were incompetent. In fact, my favorite album by UH is the third album"Look at Yourself". The title track is an absolute classic (catch the live version), "I Want to be Free" is great and I think "July Morning" is the best song Heep ever did. And yes, it runs 10.32…but you just did 13 minutes of Pink Floyd, you can spare 10.32 for Uriah Heep, right? You KNOW you want to…

it's actually Ken Hensley singing, however, the song is from the 1971 line-up of the Salisbury album, and Byron refused to sing on it, so Hensley performs vocals on that song. The video, however, is of the 1977 lineup (after bassist Gary Thain's death and Byron's departure).

This was the first Uriah Heep song that I heard and that was back in 1971. I have been a fan ever since. I would also suggest "Come Away, Melinda" from their first album, a sad story, but sung quite well. BTW, this group is the original band.

There's a lot more Heep out there waiting for ya! Sunrise or Easy Livin are just two of the many many yet to go.

I almost didn't listen to this reaction; wasn't sure I could get past the group name. I HATED Uriah Heep's character in David Copperfield! But seeing the word "magical" in your description drew me in, and I'm glad it did!

Really good reaction to a very underrated band. Another band from England is Queen. They have this song called My Melancholy Blues, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Keep on your journey. Peace.

im 62 so I remember 70's FM getting loose and Uriah Heep was one of those late night atmospheric bands that got played before corporate programming. Since you liked this I have a unique suggestion-Candles in the rain by Melanie. You did Brand New Key which wasn't about roller skates. This song is about her experience at Woodstock where she performed and she is backed by the gospel choir Edwin Hawkins Group. Sounds like a Friday song...

Ken does this song in a solo album. He adds strings.

First band I went to see live and then had a beer with them after seeing them on their 20 year anniversary tour. They played this song completely acoustic with no amps as there was a power cut at the venue Great band to this day ❤
