Texas Tech alum here. Yes, Mike Leach was the best coach in program history. He was not only the winningest coach in program history, he made Tech relevant. During his tenure from 2000 to 2009, Texas Tech was the only program in the Big 12 that was bowl eligible every season. Not Texas, not Oklahoma. He is the only coach in program history to have beaten in-state rivals Texas and Texas A&M in the same season twice (2002 and 2008). Leach's teams actually had a 7-3 record against the Aggies. After all that, he was fired the next season in a BS political move by AD Gerald Myers and Chancellor Kent Hance.
@mabybee2 ай бұрын
Hmm, I think this is because prior to 06 - if I understand correctly - to become bowl eligible you couldn’t have a losing record at any point throughout the season and in 05, Oklahoma was 1-2 and 2-3 early in the season. That was their second worst season from 00-09 and they finished 8-4 after beating Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. Their worst season during that stretch was 8-5, the year Sam Bradford was in and out from injury (09) and they beat Stanford in the Sun Bowl. Though I guess the first game didn’t count against bowl eligibility because Texas Tech lost their first game in 02 making them 0-1 but they went 2-1 immediately afterwards, so their record didn’t get worse than .500 after that (2-2 through first 4 games). Another theory I have is in 2007, the NCAA ruled that Oklahoma had to vacate every win from 2005 due to two players receiving money from a local car dealership in Norman, so there was a time their record showed they finished 0-4 that season, though that was appealed by Oklahoma and the decision was reversed in 2008. The reversal makes me inclined to think that doesn’t factor into it unless some source isn’t acknowledging the reversal or just hasn’t had their system updated in over 15 years.

@@justinress2782 Looking alll the way back in history, sure. They've had periods where they had Case Keenum in recent years and been decent, but its only ever been a case of being decent in the AAC. I think listing "Historically bad" simply on win percentage is a poor metric, that could be severely biased towards historical conference alignments, schedules, etc. I'd say the exception here lies in back to back to back upsets against Top 10 teams (FSU, Oklahoma, and Louisville), teams that historically would've all wiped the floor with a team like Houston. 2015 Temple goes 7-1 in AAC and 10-4 Overall, losing all of their competitive non-conference games. 2016 Temple goes 7-1 in AAC and 10-4 Overall, losing all of their competitive non-conference games. They played one bad game, and considering how weird that year was, they would conceivably have competed for the National Title. They finished 12-1 with their only loss being to a really good UCLA. It was just a lot of bad luck. UCLA got beat up at the end of the season and their defense became a sieve, leading to that infamous Rose Bowl against Wisconsin and leading to the coming out party of Ron Dayne. Needless to say, the 50-42 win over Arizona State is still one of the best games in the rivalrie’s history.

Why not mention how Nebraska hasn’t won anything of note since 1999? Minnesota has historically won 7 national titles and the only team ever to three-peat!
@jkbezo13 ай бұрын
Fun fact. Minn owns a 37-25-2 series lead over Neb. Huskers never lead in the all time series. Despite Neb owning the Gophers during the '70s/'80s. Minn currently on a 5 game winning streak against them since 2019.. Minn is 8-3 vs Neb the past decade.

The 2000 Oregon State Beavers team was a magical team as well. The 1999 team had ended one of the longest winning droughts in NCAA history, with their first winning season in 29 years and first bowl appearance in 25 years. In 2000, it was expected that the team would MAYBE make another bowl game. Instead, they turned in arguably the best season in school history, with their only loss of the year being AT #3 Washington on a missed FG. Outside of that, the 2000 Beavers DOMINATED their opponents, including then #6 Oregon who had beaten Washington, forcing future #3 Overall Pick Joey Harrington into 5 INT's and a lost fumble. The Beavers then completed their magical run by utterly dismantling Notre Dame 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl. The season propelled OSU into over a decade of winning tradition, with 8 winning seasons and 5 bowl wins over the next 11 seasons. Note: If you want footage from that season, there is an old VHS video full of highlights and voiced by Legendary OSU play-by-play announcer Mike Parker that was uploaded to KZbin a few years ago. Type in "Oregon State Fast Track to the Fiesta" and it should be the first thing that pops up. It has highlights from every game from that season and coach/player interviews.

I like Oregon State a lot. But the biggest whiff I've ever seen a preseason mag make was in 01 when SI picked Oregon State as the preseason number 1, and they went 5-6. What happened that year? I was 14 and barely remember.
@kylewilson28193 ай бұрын
@@GoHawgs1987 What happened was OSU should've never been #1 LOL. We had lost a TON that offseason. WRs Chad Johnson, TJ, Robert Prescott AND TE Martin Mauer were all gone, along with virtually the entire offensive line. We had a couple guys back on defense, but we lost a few key guys there too. The main issue for that OSU team was that the previous 2000 squad had been made up of largely Seniors and 1-year Transfers, and they were all gone. Without a stout O-Line, Ken Simonton couldn't run the ball. And Jonathan Smith couldn't throw if no one could get open. Just a very young team with expectations set far too high. Still, they rebounded nicely in 2002, and then Riley took them over in 2003.

Gotta include Temple in their stretch from 2015-2016. The trash of all trash programs for over 100 years. Actually got to double digit wins beating Pennsetate after a 70 game losing streak to them. 2016 they also got to 10 wins including a conference championship, first one in exactly 50 years. Pure definition of a trash program on a cindarella run.

The '95 Northwestern team would be a good one. Please don't base greatness on 10 win seasons. The Gophers never regularly played more than 9 games a year until 1964. PJ Fleck doesn't need help rowing his ego's boat.
