I did love that line, but I didn’t like that it was paired with him basically being willing to let the world be destroyed just to spite Poseidon. That’s nowhere NEAR Percy’s character. I would’ve liked to see it implemented in a different way.

@@ryern6350 respectfully disagree. I get that Percy is very critical of Poseidon (rightfully so) but his strong moral compass has always been a major part of his character, to the point that Athena calls it his fatal flaw. When he’s given the quest in the first book he doesn’t feel up to it. He’s scared and nervous because he’s had little formal training, but he accepts it anyway because it’s the right thing to do. He has the added personal motive of rescuing his mom, but she wasn’t the sole reason he went on the quest (which is why he left her behind in the book).

Just finished the 3rd episode and despite the pacing issues (probably my biggest gripe with the show) I really love the character work the series is doing so far, even with the (minor) story changes. I think Rick and the other writers are adding more emotional weight to the fact that the demigods often feel neglected by their parents. That additional weight is going to have massive payoff by the end of the season, particularly for the non-book readers who don't know what's coming. I'm a newer adult fan myself but I am absolutely loving this series even without the nostalgic attachment. I also recently went back to school to study creative writing and I think this show is a great example to work off of when it comes to learning how to make a good adaptation. I've done a tiny bit of book to screen stuff and one of the things you learn almost immediately after trying it out yourself is that you have to consider what should stay the same and what _needs_ to be changed to make the jump to the new medium work effectively. The show is doing a great job of balancing out both sides of the adaptation equation imo

So far, as a long-time book fan, I am very happy with the adaptation so far. My dislikes were: 1) The insane info/lore dump from Sally in episode 1. Could have been done better. 2) MINOR SPOILER FOR NON-READERS = I didn't personally enjoy the sarcastic, confrontational side of Sally towards Gabe. I had so much respect for Sally in the books because she swallowed her emotions and pride in a toxic relationship for the sake of her son. She needed Gabe's stench to hide Percy's godly scent from monsters. By being the way she is in episode 1 towards Gabe, it felt like she was risking the "stability" of that relationship and, by proxy, the safety of Percy. If Gabe left her due to her strong personality, she would lose the mask for Percy's half-blood scent. If Gabe hurt her in retaliation, Percy would inadvertently use his powers in defense of his mother, attracting monsters to him. I wish she was more reserved. It made the end of book 1 and the Medusa head moment so much more impactful and satisfying. Sometimes the hardest battles are fought in silence
@Craftidore
@Craftidore Жыл бұрын
My interpretation of that scene where Sally stands up to Gabe was that it was an exception; a change of pace. She knows Percy is going to summer camp, so it no longer matters if their relationship is stable.
@angelinawilson75
@angelinawilson75 Жыл бұрын
These were my exact feelings! Don't get me wrong, Sally being more confident can be a good thing in these modern times for women, but it also removes the sacrifice of being with Gabe in the first place. I don't think Gabe would leave her because of her strong personality, but it does make the dynamics different from the book, and not necessarily for the better. Regardless, that was my only critique of the first episode, along with the exposition dump, but I blame the show's run time for that. I wonder if they're going to change the ending of Gabe with Medusa for that reason. We'll have to wait and see.

EXACTLY what I was saying, I don't at all understand the backlash I've seen for this opinion, ppl saying "oh Gabe doesn't have to do this and this to be abusive, Sally doesn't have to act like this and this to be a victim to it" but like- that's what makes you so angry! In the books, just the image of Sally's interaction with Gabe, retreating to Percy's room after her long shift at work, giving him blue food and talking about Montauk shows you so much about her character without even Percy himself having to say anything.

Please more episode reactions! I need to relive every second with my people haha but yes I’m adoring this show mostly for the characters and the perfect cast who *understand* the characters! Like even out of character, the actors are so good and I’m soaking up every cast interview because they fit so well. I’m excited to see the kids continue to grow as actors on the show where they can make more creative and executive decisions once they are truly comfortable in their roles because they have it! And I think it shows with the adults because the acting choices they are making are soooo perfect like Sally Jackson standing ten toes down for Percy at all times even against Percy himself is just amazing understanding of who Sally is. Honestly this show could be put together with the budget of a 5th grade play for the background and CGI I would still love it because of the actors, so really as long as that continues, I’m all in!

Totally! 👏🏼 I saw someone describe it as representing the mask that abusers can put on and representing more of the emotional/economic abuse which I definitely agree with and think they did a good job of that! I think my concern is mostly that the tone almost feels comedic in his scenes, like that they chose stylistically to make him seem more silly so it might come off to audiences who don’t know the story that he’s supposed to be just funny and harmless, but I think the emotional weight that the situation needs to be treated with will come at the end of the season! omg sorry that was long haha I just love discussing this show 😂 so happy to hear there’s other fans who read it for the first time this year!!
@krankarvolund7771

I get what you're saying, but I feel like that should be explored in a different show, where you're centered on the abuser and his victime. Here, we get one scene of Gabe in the first episode, and maybe a flashback in the last one, and the punishment of Gabe will be death by Medusa's glare. You NEED a frontal and hard scene to justify that kind of fate, otherwise, it's Sally that will pass for the bad guy ˆˆ'

@@krankarvolund7771 Yeah I was wondering if they'll even have Gabe be petrified at the end, cus if this guy was killed as he's characterized now it would feel pretty extreme. He's definitely an asshole but doesn't seem outwardly abusive from what we've seen. Maybe they'll just have Sally break up with him at the end, or maybe they'll be a bit more overt with his characterization as a villain by the end. I trust they'll do it right tho and not let Sally be perceived as the bad guy.

As someone who read Percy Jackson already at the age of 9 (and later also read all the other series that Rick wrote), first of all I want to say that he is without a doubt my favorite author, and I could really talk about the books for hours but I'll get to the point. I have to admit that at first I didn't connect with the series, and I had a lot of criticism about the casting of the actors, or parts of the plot that appeared in the book but not in the series, but then as the episodes progressed and even when I compared it to the movies, I really fell in love with the series itself, and Walker Scovel is the perfect Percy Jackson ! I will always prefer the books over everything else because I really grew up on them, but I am relatively very happy with the series and Rick really listened to the fans of the books. I personally would really love five seasons... (sorry that the English is not written so well, I don't speak English as a native language)

My only complaint is that in the book Chiron is hoping Percy is not poseidons son (although he heavily suspects it) and his claiming has more of a solemn tone to it, which I would have preferred to see. First, don't overwork yourself of course, and second, it gives me time to watch the episodes on my own without getting spoiled XD Personally I would have two complaints, a very minor one on the SFX, I feel like Chiron is slightly off, like his horse body is too big for his human half, so he looks like a weird chimera stitched together, not an actual monster like the Minotaur or Grover. But it's very minor, and really in a few scenes where he's shot from far aside, other than that it works fine ˆˆ Second, from an adaptation, I don't like the way they go with Gabe, as you said he feel sanitized, and I get that they probably did it to up Sally's character which is a very good thing in my books but I have two problems with it. First, if Sally is a strong independant woman who yells on her abusive husband, it gives her strength, but also diminish the sacrifice she made that we learn at the end, staying with an abusive smelly husband to keep Percy hidden from monsters. Second, if Gabe is not as abusive as in the book, he doesn't deserve his fate anymore. I've already felt weird in the books that she killed Gabe and all his Poker friends, killing only Gabe is probably one of the rare good choices of the movie. But if you change the couple dynamics from "abusive husband and helpless wife" to "dysfunctionnal relationship with litte abuse", well I don't support the end method to be "kill the husband" ˆˆ' Wow, I've written a novel about two negative points while I really enjoyed this show XD

Hey! I agree with most your points but after rereading the book today I wanted to lyk that Sally only kills Gabe in the book and not his friends. She reports him missing to police and then sells a piece to a soho gallery titled “The Poker Player”. Just the one ugly neorealism sculpture of Gabe, so you dont have to worry about his friends (one of which was relatively nice)!

I’M SO GLAD SOMEONE POINTED OUT THE CHIRON ISSUE!! LIKE WHY THE FUCK IS HE THAT TALL WHAT THE HELL IT’S NOT LIKE A CENTAUR IS A CREATURE THAT IS RARELY SEEN IN FILM JESUS CHRIST Ok screaming over. I do really agree with the Gabe point though. In fact, two of the best parts of the movie, in my opinion, were Chiron’s (general, obviously not fantastic but general) accuracy, and how terrifying and rage-inducing Gabe was on sight, and how he was disgusting to both Percy and Sally. It made the reveal of Sally’s reasoning MUCH more impactful, and as a casual fan, I was surprised by how angry I was that that whole section was watered down.

I’m in the same boat as you, I just recently joined the fandom like a few months ago but I reread the books recently - I watched the movies and yk how they are 😭 but it’s so nice watching and feeling that satisfaction like when we got the “you drool when you sleep” and Mr. D calling Percy “Peter Johnson”🤩 this tv show has sooo much potential and I CANNOT wait to watch the whole thing

I just found your channel -- this is the second one I've seen. You are so well-spoken and come up with some great points! You are cracking me up with "not grown up with it". I first read these books when I was about 35 years old (only the PJO series out at the time), and have been absolutely obsessed ever since. Love how we are all different! Thank you for your commentary!

She really hits the nail on the head with how those of us who grew up reading it were really affected by the books. I was undiagnosed ADHD until 17 and dyslexia until this year (20, no one suspected anything because I *seemed* to read so easily. Even i didn’t know how much I was struggling for years. I had a bad concussion and the symptoms of dyslexia, leading to a diagnosis). I also have a heart condition that always alienated me. I used books to escape, and in an especially hard time in my childhood, I found Percy Jackson. I genuinely think these books shaped who I am today.

My mom actually got me into the Percy Jackson series. She's a teacher and her students picked the first book one year to read. At 50 yo she fell in love with the series and suggested it to me. Which I think really cements the idea that the books work for all ages.

What's kinda annoying now is people arguing whats canon now. Which is weird because this isn't the first book to screen adaptation. Both can exist without people saying one is real and not the other.

I binge read all 5 pjo books in the last week and the show thus far is near IMMACULATE A faithful adaptation that is artistically unique. My only gripe is a minor one- that being Medusa being a prettyfied white woman with a hat instead of the more logical old crone in a burka from the book, and the general de-aging of the so far 3 old lady characters that have appeared. Otherwise just about everything is gorgeous and sincerely crafted. Interestingly, all the scenes featuring heavy uses of cgi (the furies, the minotaur, the dryad) have been incredibly slow and still in terms of movement of any kind- even though three of these such scenes have been action scenes. It makes me wonder what materials they were working with for the cgi and the constraints

In response to what you have to say about luke (6:20) coming from someone who read the books in high school (about 4 years ago): Luke's was the one casting that I was unhappy with because SPOILER ALERT he is supposed to come off as this fun, sweet, polite, all-around great guy, because that makes the betrayal at the end hurt that much more. But with actor that they chose, you just don't get that feeling. When I was watching this episode with my younger brother and Luke came on screen, he immediately asked me if he was a bully. That is not the vibe we're supposed to get from Luke. That's just my opinion.
@athena8335
@athena8335 Жыл бұрын
Look at first I was also unsure about the casting but after a few scenes with him, I got that charming "I can make everyone blush if I want to" vibe that Luke from the first book has. And well, your little brother was supposed to firstly think, that Luke is a bully, bc Percy thinks so too. And a scarred face isn't particularly often seen on a good guy, which you know, holds true to Luke for quite some time. As soon as he turned the charme on, book Luke is notorious for, I was happy. And I grew up with those books and reread them every year at least ones, for the past six years, so my opinions on Percy Jackson are damn strong and based in a long journey with the books (unfortunately also with the movies, if you can call them that). But as you said: Just my opinion.

I did grew up with Percy Jackson's books and he is engrained in my core , everything felt so amazing and in the feels , the way they all did a great job I wanted to cry . The deeper emphasis in Sally and Percy felt specially great, the way he pray to her with the candle, the way he and Grover interacted , the way you could tell from the beginning Percy's fatal flaw and Annabeth's and how those flaws are at play here , the guilt Grover has for Thalia , how important Thalia is , the way the gods aren't the best parents , and the restlessness of Luke's . 🥺

Sally’s line before she disappears where she tells Percy “you are singular” is what broke me, cuz as an adhd adult who got diagnosed as a kid but didn’t fully understand adhd until I was an adult, I feel like my identity got splintered into the various things I saw in myself. I was a shy bookworm, now I’m not. I’m an artist and a writer but I can’t seem to finish anything I start. My adhd influences everything I do, everything I think and feel, every choice I make, so what if I’m nothing more than my disorder? Then Sally said “You are singular” and it clicked with something in my mind. I am not a byproduct of mental illness, I am not just what I manage to create, I am a person with worth, and I may be made up of a bunch of different interests and experiences but there’s no need to have one of those define me. I can pull all those influences together in the shape of a human being who has intrinsic value in her existence.

I read the lightning thief for the first time when I was twelve (I am 23 now) and I think the show is a perfect adaptation so far. Exhibit A f this being that they revealed hi parentage so well in the show that I totally forgot that that's not how it happened in the book (honestly, I like how the show did it better). Ithink you're right in saying that they are taking care to make the show accessible to people who aren't familiar with the source material, but still pleasing to the people who do. I love it so much already! ALSO I TOTALLY MISSED UNCLE RICK IN THE BACKGROUND! THAT'S SO COOL!!!! I agree that Gabe seems a bit watered down, but hopefully that changes later.

The series so far is hitting the important points. Percy is so good. He hates bullies, whether they target him or not. He stands up to all bullies, even when they're gods. Luke is the big brother to Percy, showing empathy towards Sally's fate and helping Percy survive being a demigod. Sally was excellent. Many of the minor characters have been handled quite well. Right now, I only have issues with one of the characters, Grover. Grover snitching on Percy was way off base. Grover may have been meek in PJO, but he never sold-out Percy.

I want to ask, Have you read Demigods files? It's a 2-3 short side stories that are perfect to read between PJO and Heroes of Olympus. One of them is Luke's dairy set at the time when he and Thalia were on the run before finding Annabeth. If you love Luke's character(like I do), you'll enjoy reading it and It'll certainly help understanding his process of thinking more)
