I could understand having a piccolo bass to experiment with different sounds on one or two songs, but having it as your main instruments is a strange decision. And reading people comparing him with Geezer Butler or Steve Harris... No. Just no. He may be your favorite songwriter and that's entirely valid, but in order to be on the same level as the best bassists, you have to at least play the same instrument. A regular bass presents a lot of challenges that a piccolo bass simply doesn't. I don't necessarily think he's cheating or trying to fool anyone. He chose an unusual instrument as his main one and that's ok. But that thing is considerably easier to play than a regular bass.

Idk about that. Being a bass player myself and having small hands, fatter fingers, I would have a really difficult time with the string spacing of a piccolo bass. Would take a while for me to get used to. Joey also has fairly long fingers, which to me is pretty crazy. It definitely imo, would be a challenge to play his bass

Thank you for taking the time to write brother, but my main base is a standard 34 inch scale. Long scale base with heavy gauge big strings on it. That’s what I play except in my solo I play a piccolo bass which I can promise you is far from an easy instrument to play, but you should make your own experience and buy one and then try it yourself. Stringed instruments can be set to many different varities of tunings. But if using standard tuning as a reference, the strings on a four string bass are tuned to the same notes as the 6th through 3rd strings on a guitar. (E, A, D, G) Just thicker strings and tuned an octave lower.

DeMaio's Bass is very weird, it looks like a 4-string guitar rather than a normal bass. It has a narrow fingerboard which is probably 32 inch scale, and he uses quite thin strings compared to the normal bass strings.... Anyone to shed some light?
