I studied film and cinematography when I was younger so I knew about how camera angles can do great illusions if done and timed correctly. I loved the breakdowns and how sometimes we don't need CGI to do practical effects! Definitely not easy to pull off and involves plenty of rehearsals, tight choreography and timings. Reminded me so much of the breakdown of the Daredevil one-shot take they did for the hallway. "You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. Its a high stakes cups and balls and we dont expect the ending but the reveal is so rewarding.

As a person with an intense interest (and a lot of research) in creating illusions, these were very impressive. My personal favorite was the one filmed in reverse. Not only did the method COMPLETELY fool me, but also your performace and techniques were flawless. INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE!
@Jack-yq6ui2 жыл бұрын
considering your intense interest, you should note that there is a massive difference in creating a workable illusion in real life, and everything else. - all of the "illusions" in this video are essentially camera tricks. I dont even understand what the point here was, this is not magic but just movie effects. For the life of me I dont see what is interesting about this? giant walls falling off camera, filming things in reverse, specific camera angles to obscure things, etc etc. literally nothing in this video has anything to do with magic/illusions.
@rosskennedy19602 жыл бұрын
As you say, there is a "massive" difference between a live vs filmed illusion. The term "massive" in this case refers to the problems which must be overcome to effectively create the illusion. The point you are trying to make, is that, unless they work live, they are not real illusions. In my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth. An illusion is anything that is likely to be wrongly perceived by the senses. Whether this is done by camera angles or physical manipulation, they are both illusions. I think what you are actually saying is "these illusions are NOT magic". If so, that is an entirely different discussion.
@Jack-yq6ui2 жыл бұрын
@@rosskennedy1960 I said "literally nothing in this video has anything to do with magic/illusions" so I dont know why that wasnt clear😅 .. In any case.. if the trick only works in a video one might aswell employ CGI. The difference is akin to pranks and fake pranks on camera, reality and reality TV, having sex and watching porn, eating food or watching a cooking show.

Thinking about it, I think it is the simplicity of how each of the tricks are done that I like the most. If you look really closely there's a lot of things you can start to pick out that can give it away, but if you try to strive for perfection and rely on things like CGI, you start to lose the authenticity which is why I think Chris was so against it. It's that experience what makes it truly magical I think.

I figured all of them for the most part. Pieces of methods I missed: 1.) The falling wall - I think it was completely unnecessary and could have been done with just people running in behind cam. 2.) How the giant card tower was raised. I knew it had to already be in place, but assumed it raised straight up from a hole in the ground. 3.) The umbrella lift then pull up. - I figured there was a harness running up a specially made umbrella that got hooked and pulled up, but the low-tech method is cooler, lol. I even knew the grass was CGI. It could have been done without it with a larger sheet of fake grass going left and right off screen and the back placed up against the edge of the track... and with more padding to hide the obvious base underneath it. *Under the tables in the mental institution was also definitely CGI.* It looks nothing like it did in the behind the scenes clip.
