Even Penn Jillette said "Street Magic" changed everything, showing the reactions more than the effect itself pumped it up. Close up magic became the shit, and serious sleight of hand was suddenly more impressive than choreographed stage shows. To do the impossible right under your nose is so much better than distracting you with strippers and lighting effects.
@j.d.heiney68684 жыл бұрын
Perfectly stated! I never really liked theatrical stage magic much because even though you may not know how it’s done, you still know that it’s just a trick and that it’s all smoke and mirrors. David Blaine changed all that with Street magic. It was in your face and undeniable. Just pure magic. Not only did you not know how it was done, your mind couldn’t fathom how it would even be possible. David Blaine restored a love for magic that I had as a child but lost as I got older. After seeing his first special I immediately wanted to do magic again.
@trinidad173 жыл бұрын
And to boot many of David Blaine tricks in Street Magic weren't that fancy, so you had plenty of angry magicians complaining that "he does the bitten coin, it's so lame!" instead of capitalizing on Blaine's popularization of magic, and even upping up their own game.

Hearing you say you started by reverse engineering David's tricks is what got you started brought back memories. I started the same way. I used to play poker a lot as a kid before it was big on TV. I moved to another town/city to go to college and had recorded David Blane's Street Magic special on my VCR. Watched that tape a ton. I started by reverse engineering the red string trick he did to the old man on the bench with no words. Then I figured out how he did the trick to Emmitt Smith with the queens to aces. I started doing these tricks for patients in the hospital as a Certified Nurses Assistant. That's when the love kicked in. I'm currently a nurse and still randomly amazing patients while they're sick in the hospital. Thanks for sharing your love on KZbin man. I love your channel.

Penn once said in an interview that he thinks Street Magic it the best magic film ever made. When asked about Chris Angel he simply replied: "He isn't a magician." Chris Angel uses fake paid full audiences and also steals other peoples tricks and then sues them into not being able to perform the magic they invented. I very much dislike Chris Angel. Blaine and Penn and Teller are awesome though. Except for Blaine's bullet catch I hated that.

Introducing a camera at all, really fucks things up for me. Like, even if you don’t use any camera tricks, stooges, or cheesy editing, I don’t know how impressed to be by any one trick. I could make up a lot of stupid shit on the fly and try it on 100 people who look stupid, and it’s bound to work once, and I’m not even a magician.

The biggest problem about getting caught lying about editing, and lying about not using plants, is that you lose the trust of the audience. Using plants and editing you can do anything without much creativity. Check this out: Me: "pick a number between 1 and infinity" Plant 1: 5,621,023,814,403,415 Me: "haha, wow, ok, slow down, I'm writing it down. that's 5,621,023,814,403,415?" Plant: "yes" Me: "Ok...now I have to find that number somewhere...sir, pull out your wallet. take out a random credit card." Plant 2: "haha, wow, ok, um here?" Me: "check this out, the numbers match."
@OhanaFilms4 жыл бұрын
@@sydhamelin1265 Exactly. After learning he used editing to augment his levitations on his first special I never trusted anything he did again. If I see a magician live, I know I'm being lied to but the deception is done through masterful manipulation. That's the fun of it. It allows you to think "this magician actually has magical powers" even though you KNOW it's just a trick. Maybe David Blaine really did freeze himself and hold his breath that long but there's nothing fun about it when you just can't trust it.

I remember recording the TV show that had David Blaine turned his hand 360 on the ground, and finding out how to do it after re-re-rewatching it on VCR as a kid. I've been doing that trick for the past 25 years and the reactions I get from it are AMAZING. One of my all time favorites.
@mrdabeetle14 жыл бұрын
His illusions are mostly just the simplest tricks of palming or line of sight. The chicken is just the "watch me pull my thumb apart" trick but with a prop. If he ever hands you an icepick to inspect, ask him if you can borrow a Sharpie and watch his reaction. He's so much better at misdirection than anyone I've ever seen. He is so much better at preparing the audience to be dumbfounded than anyone I've ever seen. I wish he would show how his old illusions are done so people would realize how easily they were fooled by something so simple. Knowing how he did what he did doesn't ruin the magic for me, it just makes it more impressive and I wish he would share that with people. He takes the oldest simplest premise for tricks that kids do and turns them into "an unbelievable feat". Teller does a bit of the same type of misdirection, but Blaine is so much better at it.

That wouldn't be smart if he cared about the industry. So others can learn and keep the legacy alive.

@@GodofLovers Is there not value for the industry to let old tricks be revealed and force magicians to be creative? You can 100% know the trick and still be impressed if it's done well. This YT video is proof.

Can't help it but I feel that the editing is just crossing the line, what's next, postproduction CGI?

that's the problem. Once you know there's SOME editing it might as well ALL be.

My first experience of David Blaine was seeing a KZbin video from like 6 + years ago called Real or Magic and I was hooked. In fact I stumbled upon Chris Ramsey’s channel because of a related suggestion last year

Completely random fact: In 2017 more people were killed from injuries caused by taking a selfie than by shark attacks.
@devadeepmenon3404 жыл бұрын
Well that doesn't seem fun...
@mrh1074 жыл бұрын
That's because deaths by shark attacks are actually quite rare. Whereas idiots with a smartphone are everywhere.
@antoniodiavolo4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case every year. Like someone else said, shark attacks are extremely rare but there are lots of dumb people with phones.
@matthewbartke44244 жыл бұрын
Only 5 of the 88 shark attacks in 2017 were fatal. That leaves a lot of room for selfie deaths.

Legit cops when they were legit. Side note: It's included in the legality of a cop being out of uniform on patrol. Yes, even a shoe.
