He is not a genius, it is very common in Asia especially at his skill level. Genius level would be someone like Rinne Tsujikubo, where she is able to do 7 x 7 digits in seconds when she was less than 10 years old. Yaashwin level is equivalent to Malaysia's primary school level mental calculation competition. Malaysia's primary school national level is doing at least 3x3 digits. In conclusion, while not everyone is able to do mental calculation, Yaashwin skill level is considered VERY easy and common among those who can do it in Asia.

Okay... As a fellow Speed math fan, who, in my youth, was the 6th grader that was beating our foreign exchange student Masahiko Nishimoto, yes from China. He was also the school Chess champion. And while I never truly beat him at the chess game, he could not stand that I was beating him at the speed math... especially since I was a grade below him and two years younger. So.. I might have a slightly biased view... but nothing this guy does is *THAT* impressive. It's just so impressive because the *REST OF YOU* have just never cared to put forth effort into the fun of math. If you can do, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, etc... without having to "think" about the next number, it's the same thing when adding ANY numbers... granted longer ones take *slightly* longer your brain, but really... not that much. The division is the same way, it's just subtracting over and over again. Nothing special. So, yes, he's I'd say *mildly* talented at speed math, but nothing anyone you couldn't achieve if you actually applied yourself in the fashion of something you enjoy doing. Like a seamstress that can sew/stitch with their eyes closed. Or any of "fast workers" compilation... those are just regular people who actually applied themselves to a task. There has only ever been one person I'm aware of that was honestly "Other Worldly" with his mental math skills. And that's Sccott Flansburg... When "Stan Lee's Superhumans" did a bit on him, they had him do math while in an fMRI machine, and strangely his brain was using a different part to do math than what everyone else does. It was much closer to section that "normally" controls motor function which makes sense, though I'll only explain it if you ask. But that guy... did *ALL* of this before this kid did, and there *ARE* "tricks" to make the math easier. But yeah, if you *REALLY* want to be impressed with mental math... checkout Sccott Flansburg. He was in the first episode of the first season... absolutely *MIND BLOWING!*

For your information, for digits in the division trick, he doesn't have to actually calculate anything. For example, 8 % 7 and 15 % 7 (% standing for the floating part of the division) are actually equal. In general, every numbers that are 7*N+1 (e.g. 8, 15, 22, 28,...) have the same digits (and so it is for 7*N+2 up to +6). Therefore, he only needs to memorize the digits for the divisions of 9 numbers (1 to 9), knowing that 1 is trivial, the even numbers are very easy so he asked to not used them, 3, 5 and 9 gives repetitive sequences very easy to remember (e.g. 0.3333... for 3*n+1 numbers), just leaving the number 7. So, in fact, he has to memorize 6 sequences for the trailing digits. So the only thing he is really doing is to find the whole part of the division. Voila! That said, don't get me wrong, he is a good calculator, but the division skill is slightly less impressive that it looks.

For the division: The thing is there are only so many decimal possibilities when dividing by one digit. i.e. divided by seven means that you either end up with a round number or 1/7, 2/7, 3/7... 6/7. Now, you don't even need to memorize 8 decimals (edit, actually you kind of do , but I am just saying that its not just a random 8 digit out of no where) for each of these possibilities as 2/7 will be the double of 1/7 which makes it quite easy and 4/7 will be twice 2/7. Also, since it's by 1 digit, dividing by 0, 1, 2, 3 ,4 ,5, 6, are super easy as they end up as a round decimal such as 0.25, 0.75, 0.666666, 0.20, 0. and such. 7 is the hardest of all but as I mentioned previously, you need to memorize a few numbers. 8 is easy as it will end up as 0.125, 0.250, 0.375... and such. 9 is even easier since you would get 0.111, 0.222, 0.333 and such. So realistically the hardest part of this is to quickly figure out what is the left over in that case 1 to find out the decimal. Most of us with a relatively good mental calculator can probably would figure out that 589/7 is 84 and 1/7th if we are given a minute or so. He does it in like a second which is what makes it great and he obviously know that 1/7 is .14285714285 Overall, it is impressive. He is definitely gifted and probably put in a good amount of work. Does this make him a human calculator...? Not really. It would be much more impressive say if he can give me the 31st decimal of that number. or if he could do something like (589/7*9+75-1154)/81 (even if he takes a few extra seconds to do it)
@johnsingh49675 жыл бұрын
These r jus 2 digit which by practice anyone can do but a calculator can do verryy big calculations in seconds. A real human calculator should do calculations wid more than 5 digits he ain't really a human calculator he is jus playing wid mind as very few can do at this speed. No one noticed that he was doing only 2 digit and he claims him a human calculator and a calculator function i already mentioned above
@aayushgoyal83375 жыл бұрын
Dividing by 7 is easy It follows a pattern When remainder is 1 decimal places are:142857 When remainder is 2 decimal places are:248571 When remainder is 3 decimal places are:485712 And so on and this pattern continues

It is not even gifted, most Malaysians that have trained to do mental calculation can do what he did. 3 x 1 digit is basically beginners level and I expected that he would at least go on to advance level during his 2nd act but he is still doing the same thing. It would be impressive if he can do 7 x 7 digits like Rinne Tsujikubo but if his skill set is anything below 3 x 3 digits, I don't think he could even be qualified to compete in Malaysia's National Primary School (Junior High school) competition for mental calculation.

You asked : "Is it real or a trick?" Yes, people with this calculating ability do exist. It has got to do with recognising patterns. Once I saw an experiment with a chess master who was trained as such from her youth. She sat at a busy street in Manhattan and a speedy white van with a large chessboard mid-play on its side would pass by. She had to replicate the board on a chessboard on a table in front of her. The van passed by and immediately she copied the board with the exact pieces at the exact positions. Then the van passed by again, but this time the board was set by a non-chessplayer. The pieces were placed at random. She could not copy this board at all; it did not make sense, she could not find any chess-pattern in it to store in her memory in a nano-second. My guess with the kind of ability that Yaashwin has is that he stores the numbers in his memory while they are mentioned, and works with patterns too. He repeats the numbers aloud as they are called. He has a running total going along in his head. And maybe even, like a chessplayer, have all the variables that can come next already at the ready, so then he 'just' has to erase the ones that did not make it. Each digit position is 'only' 10 possibilities. You and I and most people would have to do real calculations, like a calculator but much much slower. Yaashwin does not calculate in the same manner (I think) but sprouts the result in an instant from the display in his brain, and this can do it as quickly as a digital calculator (and potentially even faster). A stunning talent. As for the question if this is 'magic' ? In my opinion this qualifies as magic even less than a contortionist. A contortionist also has a personal ability that is rare, thus worthy of a performance. By letting limbs bend in unexpected ways, he tricks our expectations, a bit like a magician. We did not know what specifically was coming. A regurgitator is no magician. But if he puts a thread and a needle in his mouth and gets a threaded needle out, then he is doing a magic trick. Because he is fooling us with his 'slight of intestines'. (If he could realy thread a needle inside he is a superman.) Yaashwin is only related to a magical performance because he entertains us by doing something that we cannot do. But we do know what is coming; whether it is adding or multiplying, he can do it, and we not. The surprise is at the amount of numbers he can mentally swallow. I'm not sure if my nitpicking rings true with others, but entertaining it is anyway, that such an extraordinary talent makes us doubt reality, if even for a moment.

A better example of patterns, that each of us has experienced. Flip fast througn the pages of a book and you will recognise words. That is not reading but recognising of patterns.

@@JasonParkerMagic -- A way to look at it is from your own perspective. Your muscles+brain know how to handle cards. To me and many others it is astonishing to see the cards being moved about by fingers that seem to act on their own. And that is what's happening when you handle cards. You trained your muscles-braincells to know what to expect and act appropriately. If a card is about to fall out of the deck being shuffled, you'll prevent that from happening and eventually the perfection stops even the start of a fault. Your brain is not actively working. Like a horny male fly chasing a female fly, your brain is bypassed and your limbs work autonomously ;-) ;-) Like a musician in tune with an instrument, or a sporter with the body, Yaashwin handles his brain-cells in a way that can seem to us as impossible. Arthur C. Clarke once said : "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." That goes also for a talent like instant calculating by head. I think for Yaashwin it is as if he is in The Matrix, when Neo is in a different time-speed and can pick the bullets out of the air at ease. Well, if that does not attract the girls, what will ?

Gotta say he got lucky the judge picked to divide by 7 because that's the 1 digit that will make him look most impressive. But that's probably why the judge picked 7 - not too hard to realize that's the most complex division, so it would be a real test. There's patterns to the decimals for every 1-digit number divisor (actually every number technically); the decimals always repeat. Likely Yaashwin calculated the whole number and the remainder, and then memorized the decimal for the remainder. Although dividing by 3,6,7,9 can leave you with a decimal that goes on forever, they always repeat after a certain number of digits. Div by 3 repeats after 1 digit. /6 repeats after 2 /7 repeats after 6 (which is why it's the most impressive to someone who doesn't know this) /9 repeats after 1 Also the digits for every number divided by 7 are the same (in the decimals). What I mean is the 6 numbers that repeat whenever you divide by 7 always consist of 1,2,4,8,5,7 all exactly once. 1/7=.142857... 2/7=.285714... 3/7=.428571... 4/7=.571428... 5/7=.714285... 6/7=.857142... And if you look closely, the order of the numbers always stays the same. It's always in the order 1->4->2->8->5->7->1...etc. The only thing that changes is where in that pattern it starts. This also helps with the memorization. I'm sure Yaashwin at this point doesn't even need to really go through this process, he just knows it by heart like 1+1, but I this is just something that will help anyone memorize the decimals of dividing by 7 easier.

Yaashwin, like any good mental calculator, is aided by his memory. He has performed these calculations before. It's easy to see the benefits of this even if you are not a skilled mental calculator. Count from one to ten out loud as fast as you can. You don't have to think about it, do you? Now try counting by twos. It's not too difficult, but is a slower process and you have to think about it a little. Now try counting by 13s. Most people have never done this, but Yaashwin has practiced this many times. What I would do is to have him count by 74s, for example, but I'd have him start with 7 or something like that. So he'd have to count 7, 81, 155, 229, and so on. I'll bet he'd be a little slower. He'd be much less likely to have the series memorized. As for division, it is pretty easy to remember the decimal repetends when using only a one-digit divisor (I can do it and I'm not a genius). Give him a two-digit divisor: he could do it but he'd be slower.
