Many people think that Ooma VoIP phone service is completely free after you pay the upfront costs for the Ooma equipment. Originally that was, and still is the case for Ooma's original subscribers, but later on, they started charging "taxes" for the service. What doesn't make any sense is that many of these taxes from the government and the FCC are based on a percentage of the service cost, so theoretically, when the service is free, the taxes that are based on a percentage of the service cost - are also non-existent. That being said, Ooma has raised their taxes from what used to be really cheap... to amounts that cost a bit more than a year of magicJack service costs. So now, as of early 2013, magicJack and NetTalk are the routes to go for cheap service. Google Voice is also an option that is actually free at the moment, but there's uncertainty with the fact that GV will remain free. I use magicJack Plus ind it works great. Looks like Ooma is no longer the cheap option. The equipment is expensive, and the "taxes" now cost you more than magicJack years do! The only fee added to magicJack service is a regulatory FCC fee, which brings the bill to around ~$31
