My ideal Gordon is an early prototype of the A1, having a 4-6-4 wheel configuration built in 1920. In 1923 he was sold to the nwr and named "Gordon the mighty". And he still pulls the express, but its set up like a high speed train with an engine at both ends, Gordon at the front, and great nothern (yes he was preserved in my au) at the other end.

I really am enjoying all these choices and learning about engines I wasn't even aware off into the bargain. As you say Oliver while very experienced could still be flattered with admiration by younger and more powerful engines still leading to him making the mistakes of his original counterpart. Hmm I wonder what you would come up with for Bill and Ben. While we know they are based on Alfred and Judy I wonder if there is a comparable set of twin engines IRL that would've done similar work.

This series is going to get more controversial about talking locomotives... and I love it. I wouldn't make this decision in my own AU. I love Big 4 era stuff so Oliver has to be GWR for me. But I like the fact you explain your thought process so well. Side tangent, I am sad about the lack of SR engines in the books. No 'Schools' class or Lord Nelsons - and no Thomas and Stepney don't count here. Wonder if you'll use an SR engine at some point? Anyways, good video as always.

I prefer Oliver the way he is because I used to think that he was Thomas' brother when I was a toddler as they both have the same eyebrows. But this engine basis would've probably worked well as an engine on a visit from London who would put Thomas and Oliver at ease when they'd be working with a connection system from the Farquhar branch line to the Little Western.
