True, however she did express interest in returning for a possible reboot of sorts, thanks to an excellent story idea by Chappie director, Neill Blomkamp. His idea would pick up after this movie, years later (explaining the actors ages) and would totally ignore Alien 3 and later (which I and a lot of other people would be 100% on board with). But, as soon as this idea got published (I think it was on Neill's Instagram page) Ridley Scott started making noise that he wanted to make some prequels and that was that. Now that those have not been as well received as the studio had hoped, maybe there's hope for Neill's idea! But, they don't have unlimited time to do it! Sigourney Weaver is 72!

Despite T2 pushing the boundary on CGI VFX it definitely doesn't age well; epecially when compared to Jurassic Park, which came out only a few years later and whose CGI still holds up today. Compare to T1 which had amazing practical effects (including a few unnerving stop-motion segments), a dark and oppressive atmosphere, a balls-to-the-wall synth soundtrack that was abandoned nearly wholesale in the sequels, and outstanding performances to boot. With how low of a budget T1 was shot with, it had no right being as good as it was. Course, this is just my opinion.

1986 and Ripley firmly placed herself at the top of the list of "Don't f*** around with this woman". (Sarah Conner is number 2) So happy you saw the "extended version" as it provides more context than the theatrical version. And that Jonesy "hiss" is my favorite recorded cat hissing sound EVER. Fun fact: The movie was obviously nominated for a Special Effects Oscar. They provided ONE clip (The alien coming out of the water behind Newt) as the ONLY clip for "consideration". They won the award. Fun fat 2: Due to filming in Europe, the crew had really strict rules about breaks, hours of the day, and days of the week. Because things were "confrontational" between the European crew and American crew, there were some "angry vibes" during filming. BUT EVERYONE agreed that Newt needed to have a bit of fun on the set. So when it came to filming the "water slide" scene, the crew let the girl do it several times because she was having so much fun. (Think 5 or 6 times). Fun fact 3: Prior to the release of later films, 3 actors in this movie held the "honor" of being killed by both the Xenomorph and Terminator. (1. Hudson - A2 and T1. 2. Bishop - T1 and A2. 3. Vasquez - A2 and T2). (Bill Paxton was punk in opening of T1, Lance was cop in T1, and Janette was foster-mom in T2) (Hicks, Biehn, technically doesn't die from a Xeno) Fun fact 4: Shortly after filming Aliens and Terminator 2, Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein) moved out of acting and started selling specially designed bras for "larger breasted" woman. She was making so much money from her clothing line, that she retired from acting because she "didn't need the money".

@miriam83762 жыл бұрын
It's funny how different people's reactions can be to the same movie. I hate this version, lol. I feel like the inclusion of the mother-daughter relationship trashes Ripley's character. First, it makes Ripley seem like an absolutely terrible mother that she left her own young kid behind to go into space for work. Even if space travel has become more routine in the future to the point where she's not gambling with her life despite someone depending on her, she's still leaving her kid behind for months or even years at a time, because in the first movie, they're in hypersleep, and she's no rookie on her first trip out. She's been leaving her kid behind a lot, for long periods of time. That's a choice that makes her downright unlikable to me. Second, it makes her bond with Newt seem more like grief and guilt than a heroic amount of compassion and responsibility toward others. It kinda implies Newt is the replacement kid, and frankly, it makes Ripley seem a little unhinged at the end when she goes after Newt instead of determined.

Just to clarify, humans were never food for the xenomorphs. They were either hosts for procreation or simply organisms to be destroyed. Still terrifying either way.
@donkfail12 жыл бұрын
I agree that we never see them eat a human. But they would need some nourishment, both for energy and to build their bodies as they grow. Especially the queen as she need to produce all those eggs. Even a process where they absorb basic chemical compounds to create their tissue, like plants that take their carbon from the air, would require lots of energy. And as they grow and move much quicker than plants, this would need a huge energy input. Just basic laws of physics and chemistry, or the species would just deteriorate through entropy.
@Osprey8502 жыл бұрын
@@donkfail1 Also, we never see any corpses. That colony should've been littered with them. The xenomorphs couldn't have taken everyone to the hive because lots of humans had to have died in the fighting and they would've been useless for incubating chestbursters. It stands to reason that the xenomorphs ate them all eventually, whether it was after killing them in fights or after the chestbursters killed them.
@thundermane3622 жыл бұрын
@@donkfail1 One fact that really annoyed me, and that no one I have ever seen discuss, is how these basic laws of physics and chemistry are totally ignored in the first movie. We only had one Xenomorph then and from that chest-bursting scene to its first kill as an adult, it grew to full size without ever eating anyone or anything. How the heck did that happen? Or am I remembering that incorrectly?

In Alien 3 the one that was there did actually feed on the convicts. It even pans to it nomming on one in a hallway and they try to lure it with a dead body in the lead mold but it grabs the body and runs back in the hallways. I'm glad you went with the Extended edition of the movie. The theatrical cut skips over a few key scenes, like finding out that Ripley's daughter had passed away already. With the scene in the movie, it better establishes why she bonds so strongly with Newt. They needed eachother. I think my favorite scene of the movie is when Ripley first finds herself face to face with the queen. A lot of folks misinterpret Ripley as the first to break the silent bargain though. It plays out like this: Ripley realizes shes taken a wrong turn into the queen's egg chamber. The queen recognizes her as an intruder, and hisses as if to say "give me a good reason not to kill you". Ripley shows what her weapon can do, firing a gout of flame into the air. The queen screams an flails, definitely not enjoying the threat of fire. Ripley points it at the egg, and looks back at the queen to see if she understands. The queen waves off her drones, as if granting her passage out. As Ripley begins backing out of the room, the queen trys to catch them anyway by triggering an egg casing behind Ripley to wake and open, breaking the truce. Ripley gives the "Really?" look and punishes the queen for her treachery. Considering the queen was a giant puppet, manipulated by something like 8 people, they did an amazing job of conveying the emotion of the scene the way they did.
@panpiper2 жыл бұрын
100%
@herrzimm2 жыл бұрын
Not disagreeing completely, but I don't know if the queen can "trigger" an egg to hatch. Especially not as a means of treachery while Ripley was still holding the flame-thrower. I think it is the fact that the egg starting to hatch kind of made Ripley go "Well, these things are just going to do it all over again when I leave" and more or less went "f*** it" and burned them. The only real issue that I have with the Queen interaction is that it doesn't cover what other sources have covered. Her "hiss" to the drones wasn't one of simply "back off", but almost a terrorized scream to "back off" because the eggs were threatened. Some sources say that Xeno's have a bit of a physic ability, and if true, the drones would have "felt" the fear as well. Making Ripley's threat even more impressive as she basically "scared" 3 Xeno's at once.
@kaojinn2 жыл бұрын
@@herrzimm I may be busting out the ol Jump-To-Conclusions Mat on the queen remotely triggering an egg to open, but with the mess of stringy tendrils on the floor that run between eggs and all over, I always took it as an extra layer of sensory perception for the queen in her lair. Like a spider web, or a mycilium network for fungus. The aliens are mysterious, who knows the full extent of their biology? :) As for Ripley being willing to leave the queen in peace if she let them go, that would have been the best outcome of their silent bargain. The entire facility the aliens lair was housed in was minutes away from a nuke-like detonation :). If she got out without fighting, even easier. Thrashing the egg chamber was a personal FU from Ripley to the source of her nightmares. :)

The only thing I think is better about the SE over the TC is the establishing of Ripley having a daughter. Without it, Ripley going ultimate mom for newt feels kind of off. It's only human to make mistakes, but not all mistakes are the same. Some mistakes involve gross negligence that carry criminal penalties. And some "mistakes" aren't really mistakes at all, or at least aren't accidental. Burke sure got what he deserved.

Really great reaction Magy, I've never seen someone else so emotional about Ripley and Newt realtionship but I understand, because you're so carefull and heartwarming person. If you'll watch other Alien movies, than I'd like to see your reaction. Many people don't like 3rd and 4th movie, but I like them, not as much as Alien and Aliens, but still. What's interesting about this franchize, each director brings different look into the movie (Ridley Scott - horror, Jim Cameron - action movie, David Fincher - well, David Fincher :-D and Jean-Pierre Jeunet - sci-fi comedy).
@herrzimm2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, 3 had too many studio executives interfering with the movie. And that made things a bit muddy because of what they insisted on being cut and being added. 4 had really good ideas, they were just let down by a rather poor script and a production that felt more like "This is mandatory" than one of "This is a passion project". So, that kind of hurt. 3 and 4 aren't what I would call "bad" movies... but they really are "hit or miss" with audiences. And most of that is because of either poor choices or poor execution. So, I kind of consider them "forgettable" and not really a "true Alien movie" but more "cookie-cutter Alien movies". Alien vs Predator franchise is pure crap top to bottom. lol

Someone else may have mentioned it below, but there's a scene shot where Ripley is looking for Newt and stumbled upon Burke cocooned, already infected, and begging her to kill him. This is very much like a scene in the first movie that was shot and also cut where Ripley discovered Captain Dallas in the same situation. In the first movie, she kills Dallas. In the second, she passes Burke by, leaving him to his fate.

This is a year later for reactions to both film reactions, so I don't know if anyone will be reading this, but, when "Alien" came out, 43 years ago (I'm so old...}, Sci Fi aficionados at the time could not help but notice that it seemed to be an updated homage to the 1958 sci Fi horror classic, "It! The Terror from Beyond Space!", with "Daktari" star Marshall Thompson as the Captain of a spaceship threatened by an unexpected invasive murderous alien life form. Well, aren't they all? The plot and story lines are completely parallel. except for being in deep space, they got their murderous hitchhiker on Mars. Even the end, found the surviving members blowing the hatch to open space suffocate the the threat (instead of blowing out into space). And for a pre-60's movie, quite like "The Thing From Another World: 1951" , the first movie interpretation of John W. Campbell, Jr's novella. "Who Goes There?", the acting and direction made both nail-biters with plenty of slow, sometimes agonizing build ups, before unleashing honestly unnerving jump-scares. Although, the "Thing" movie was scattered with with not only genuinely believable dialog, but quite a lot of throw away humor that not only gave the audience some much need relief from the drama unfolding, but added to the believable interactions of the characters. You should give both a viewing, whether you react to them or not. You will appreciate them for what they are, from when they were made, in comparison to their modern interpretive retellings. BTW, the 80's "The Thing" was actually more accurate to the original novella, and John Carpenter used the same animated graphic font that was used in the 1951 movie. That had geeks like me won over right away. (yeah, I'm old...) I hope somebody reads this, but if not...

"the artists who created the film"? You mean the studio bosses who for commercial reasons told the director the movie was too long? Don't get me wrong, the theatrical cut of Aliens is awesome, but the special edition is what the director wanted.
@herrzimm2 жыл бұрын
Normally I would agree with you. But this is a situation where the extended version (Director's cut) is better because it includes a lot of context that was cut out of the "original version" because the studio wanted to reduce the run time of the film in theaters. So, while I normally think that 1st time viewing should be the original version as seen in theaters. I'm cool with using the extended version when it actually includes context and not just a few "jokes" or "sentimental" moments like a lot of other extended movies do. Or worse, they simply drag out the action scenes and nothing else.

The part about her daughter dying wasn't in the theatrical release. While not relevant to the core story, it does so much to explain her motivation and attachment to Newt. The other scenes also help flesh out the story, background and make the scenes flow together better.

It's very relevant, because this is the story of Ripley confronting her trauma and finding a reason to live again. And she gets a second chance to be a mother. Hey, Magy! This is one of the best sequels ever made! Thankfully, you saw the superior SPECIAL EDITION version which has the Amanda Ripley scene, the functioning colony scene, Newt's family's discovery of the derelict ship scene, the automated gun scene, the Hudson speculation about queen ants scene and the name exchange scene. The future Ripley inhabits is implied to be a dystopic corporatocracy. The most pervasive and powerful corporate entity is the Weyland-Yutani Company, a 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. It is a multinational conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar transport and terraforming with a stake in every colony world. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of the Alien universe. Ash and Burke were following a secret corporate mandate to obtain a xenomorph specimen in order to profit from research and weaponization. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani. Some trivia: The picture of Ripley's elderly daughter in the Special Edition is actually Sigourney Weaver's real-life mother! The late Al Matthews, who played Sgt. Apone, was a true-blue Marine who was the first black man to be promoted to Sergeant in the Corps during his service in Vietnam! The knife-trick scene was originally supposed to be performed by Lance Henriksen alone but he convinced director James Cameron to surprise Bill Paxton by involving him as they shot the scene! Paxton's wide-eyed terror is completely real! Fan favorite Vasquez is played by non-Hispanic Jenette Goldstein! She goes out like a warrior and enables Gorman to reclaim his honor. Ms. Goldstein now is the proprietress of a Los Angeles-based boutique that specializes in bespoke large-size bras! The motto of her company is, "At Jenette's, the alphabet begins with 'D'."! Bishop's programming to not harm humans or allow them to come to harm through inaction is ripped straight from Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics! Carrie Henn, who played Newt, never acted again but became a schoolteacher. She still maintains a correspondence relationship with Sigourney Weaver thirty-four years later. The late Bill Paxton, who has the distinction of being attacked on screen by an Alien, a Terminator and a Predator, will NEVER be forgotten for his reading of the line, "Why don't you put HER in charge?", referring to little Newt in her oversized helmet. Lol. "ALIEN 3" is a DIVISIVE film but it's an EXCELLENT entry in the series. ABSOLUTELY SEE IT!!! It's directed by David Fincher and features Charles Dance and Charles Dutton. It's brutal, fast-paced, has some extraordinary scares, provides new insight into the creature and concludes the story elegantly. I strongly encourage you NOT TO SKIP IT! Make sure you see the ASSEMBLY CUT (Special Edition with longer runtime). "Alien Resurrection" is the optional one because it's a hot mess except for one cool aquatic sequence. The ambitious prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant", mark director Ridley Scott's return to the series but they are mostly good JUST for Michael Fassbender's performances. Scott demystifies the creature and unsatisfyingly attempts to address who the elephant-headed pilot of the derelict spacecraft was. VIEWING ORDER: Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL] Predator (1987) Predator 2 Predators Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY: Predator (1987) Predator 2 Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Predators Predator (2018) [SKIP THIS AWFUL FRANCHISE-KILLING REBOOT] Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL]

A few fun facts about this movie: -they only had the budget for about six alien costumes and only had them all in the same shot for one scene. - weaver refused to see the puppet of the alien queen until they shot the scene of her seeing it for the first time in order to give a truly genuine reaction of terror, and she did so sporting a back injury -the debrief scene before they went down to the planet was one of the last scenes filmed so the cast had actual chemistry to their intersections -the joke about Vasquez is actually a reference to the actress mistakenly believing the movie was about illegal aliens and showed in in full makeup at her audition
