The crop mode can get you a little more distance from your subject which might sometimes be advantageous and even 26 or even 10mp is enough for sharp 8x10 or even larger printed pictures on full farme.

I think if you stop the 35mm to f2 and not f1.8 it might be the same (f/1.4x1.5 = f2.1) so the 24GM would give an equivalent field of view and aperture of a 36mm f/2.1
@bigbubu75

Like James corectly said, it‘s not the f-stop wich makes the bokeh on the 35 smoother, it‘s the compression of the 35mm vs 24mm. It’s all about the physical focal length vs fake zoom. And it’s the reason why it is so difficult to make good super wide primes for MFT. I tried aps-c Fuji 56/1.2 wich „want‘s“ to be a 85/1.4....very good but not the same bokeh smoothness. Love your content, keep em coming and hope for this channel to grow fast

I use the 24gm in crop mode a fear bit! I've gotten use to the 24mm field of view so I usually choose that over the 35mm lens but at some cases it is more convenient to just use crop mode rather than start the hassle of changing lenses. In my A7R3's the 18mpx is plenty when keeping in mind how are the photos actually used. Ps. I think the bigger bokeh balls in 35mm is due to the lens compression.
@jamesseward9263
@jamesseward9263 Жыл бұрын
Yes the 24mm has smaller bokeh balls in crop mode because it is still a 24mm pushing the background further away as oppose to to the higher magnification of the 35mm bringing the background closer to your subject. You can see it in your example images where the background distances are different even when the 24mm is cropped. Just the design differences of the glass to get their desired focal length 😉

I have used the crop mode extensively on the 24 mm GM in some portrait sessions. The only major problem on the A7RIII is if you need to crop that image even more, then the file can get pretty small. As a result, I am moving to using my 24 mm for landscapes mostly and got the 35 mm GM for portrait sessions (great lens!). By the way, do you think it is worth the investment to switch to the A7RIV? Or just wait it out until an A7RV comes out? I can't afford the A1.

I believe DOFSimulator is correct. The DOF of the 24/1.4 in crop mode is about f/2.1. That's why at 7:30 the bokeh balls are bigger on the 35/1.4 stopped down to f/1.8 than they are on the 24/1.4 at f/1.4 in crop mode .
@jamesjackson4264
@jamesjackson4264 3 жыл бұрын
The balls are bigger not because of DOF but because of lens compression. 35 vs 24 not 1.4 vs 2.1.
@MagicWeddingPhotographer
@MagicWeddingPhotographer 3 жыл бұрын
I wondered about that too f/2.1 and f/1.8 too, but as you can see 24 on crop looks exactly like 35/1.8. So the difference between 35/18 and 35GM at 1.8 is surprising, might be due to slight difference in the focal length? Maybe one is like shorter and second longer… not sure 🤷🏻‍♂️ The compression though should be the same for 35 on FF and 24 on crop.

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer I think it has to do with mechanical vignetting. Stopping a lens down reduces the effect; see cat eyes disappearing when slightly stopped down on some (or all?) lenses. With the vignetting gone, the circles appear larger than an equivalent lens wide open.

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer Indeed, I'm willing to bet it's due to the focal length on the label of a lens being an approximation. Makes no sense to release a 33.96 mm lens, even though that's what your optical formula has produced, for marketing reasons etc. Also consider the fact that the GM focus breathes, so it's probably exactly 35 mm at some point in its focus throw, but nowhere else :)

Thank you for the great hands on comparison! 35mm at f/1.8 gives you a stronger background defocusing because although the relative aperture size is the same, it's relative to the focal length, and different focal lengths will have different actual aperture size with the same f-number. f stands for focal length. So, f/1.8 for a 35mm lens means actual aperture size of 35/1.8=19.4mm, whereas f/1.8 for a 24mm lens is 24/1.8=13.3mm

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer, I think the key differences between using ff and apsc are as follows: With the A7R4, it’s like having an A6600 in one when is APSC mode. Examples of key differences: 1) Resolution: A7R4 in APSC mode is ~26MP (=~60.4MP/2.25) vs. A6600 at 24MP; 2) EFL (effective focal length) vs FOV (field of view). When A7R4 is in APSC mode, the FOV is cropped by 1.5, but the EFL is still 1.0, hence why you don’t lose one stop of light as would with A6600 if you were using a ff lens on each body. Hence the bokeh will be smaller than the 35mm as the EFL is still 1.0 at 24mm (just FOV is at 36mm) meanwhile the 35mm EFL is at 35mm with more compression and more blur and bokeh balls will be bigger being at 35mm zoomed in 3) AF points: With A7R4, you get 74% coverage in ff (567 PDAF and 425 CDAF) but 100% coverage in APSC mode because the FOV is now cropped in by 1.5 Also the 35mm has the new nano AR coding ii, which will reduce ghosting and flare better than the 24mm. But for video, if you manual focus, it has more focus breathing. I hope I’m explaining it correctly.

Thank you for this review! But I love, what Peter Lindbergh said about photography: "Photography has to happen in the camera. It doesn't happen in Photoshop or postproduction. I'm far from being finished with the camera. That's a kind of restraint, and when you reduce yourself to something, that's when it gets interesting. I don't crop images after shooting: the framing is done in the camera. This sometimes leads me to find myself really close to the subject, creating a very strong bond." So, crop mode is wrong way, it kills creativity.

I like this idea, but crop mode on Sony does happen in camera as you shoot, so it is aligned with this idea of photography happening in the camera and not in Photoshop.

Doesn't matter if its "crop mode" or not..you can't get away from the science and physics of these focal differences..lol..the main and key differences is compression and distortion it might be a lot noticeable or might be a little bit but you can't get away from these two main factors and physics lol....portraits you still get more distortion even if you try to match up the models exact composition in the frame between a 24 "crop mode" and 35 "full frame"..but there will be a difference..even more noticeable an example between 24 and 35 "full frame"..the background compression is always the give away when you look at comparison photos between any different focal lengths..but "crop mode" is definitely handy in some situations for that "extra reach"..the crop mode will look close to the lens you are trying to "match" but it will not look exactly the same as if you have the real said focal length lens..
@vincenzodellama7158

You are completely wrong... Perspective distortion is about the distance between the camera and the subject you won't get more perspective distortion on a cropped 24mm and non cropped 35mm when you are shooting both from the same distance.
