I am that photographer that just loves compression and higher focal lengths. I shot a whole wedding using the sigma 105 f1.4 art lens. But normally I use the 85 and 50mm for all weddings. I just did a small wedding and it was in a little pavilion and all I could use was a 50 mm and a 35 mm. It took me right out of my comfort zone and once you start going so wide you lose that nice beautiful Bokeh for wider photos. I was all excited to use my new 135 mm F 1.8 GM but not at this little venue. I did get to use it for the bride & groom poses. If I can I try to use 85mm for everything, group photos and I just love how it looks

I shoot 90% of the time in my wedding films with the 50mm 1.2 GM and the other 10% of the time with the 24mm 1.4 GM. The 24mm is really good for establishing shots and group shots with minimal distortion. Other than that, the 50mm is for me the perfect focal length for wedding films. Beautiful bokeh, easy to separate your subjects.

You did a great job showcasing the differences between these lenses. For your example scenario at 14:40, I feel like the 85mm slightly nudged out the 50mm for the best image, but 85mm is harder to "run-and-gun" with for an event like a wedding so a 50mm is a better early career purchase in my opinion. Though, Sony 85 1.8 is an exceptional lens and can be found for cheap on used market. I personally use that lens a ton because I predominantly shoot dance performances which require standing further away.

For fuji, they have 16mm (24 mm FF), 23mm (35m FF), 35mm (53 mm FF), 56mm (85 mm FF) and 90mm (135 mm FF). So yeah, principles you've mentioned in this video are applicable for Fuji, or sony and canon aspc system for that matter. Just saying...

Thanks for the video. I started shooting weddings back in the late 1960s. At that time, I shot complete weddings with only a normal lens (50mm equivalent) on a medium format film camera. Later, I shot weddings with a normal lens (50mm equivalent), a wide-angle lens (28mm equivalent), and a telephoto lens (135mm equivalent) on a medium format film camera. Today, I shoot weddings with a slightly wide lens (35mm equivalent), a wide-angle lens (21 or 24mm equivalent), a slight telephoto lens (85 or 90mm equivalent), and a telephoto lens (150mm equivalent) on a digital camera. I also have two or three zooms in my wedding backup kit.

You make the 35 and 50mm combo super nice. While I think it's entirely possible to have the 35mm on a high res camera (A1/A7R12345) and use crop mode to get the 50mm look. For large prints it shouldn't matter and the 35mm is sharp enough to still be sharp while using crop mode. Then you can either leave your other lenses at home or bring the 85/135mm and get 127.5/202.5mm in crop. Amazing photos 👍

I also do this one. I always carry 2 camera. 1 crop and 1 fullframe mode with 24mm and 85mm. I usually use the 24mm on the crop which provides a FOV similar to 35mm and 85mm on the fullframe. Then if I need to shoot wider, I'll just transfer the 24mm on the fullframe and if I need longer, I'll just use the 85mm on the crop. I haven't tried using crop mode coz afaik, they suck out pixels. I don't have a7riv so I'm using crop since it has a native of 24mp.

You would also multiply the focal length by 1.5 crop to get true idea of DOF. So the 24mm 1.4 on crop becomes a 36mm f2.1 (1.4) as far as light gathering ,2.1 as far as bokeh.

Super helpful. I currently have the 24 and 35 1.4 GMs because they're just my favorites. Debating between 50 and 85 for the next lens. 85 would probably make the most sense but I do find its uses kinda limited, and it also feels way less intimate than the others. Almost an outsider's perspective. Leaning toward the 50 for this reason for the times when I want to take full body portraits. I also feel like full frame 1.4 lenses are way more versatile than the same focal length at f2, 2.8, etc, so the rules of thumb don't always apply.

you can watch my 50GM review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXTNfZKvh9Gana8 as I talk about it a little bit. In general: - 50GM is way faster in Af speed; - in the same size you get 1.2; - 50GM is little bit sharper and bokeh is more smooth, plus you get less aberration - both have very nice image 50GM it’s a better lens, but if you can get 50 Zeiss even used, (but make sure you test out the IQ, as they seemed to vary from piece to piece), you can have really great lens at really great price.

Your a legend! Listening to every word your say. YES this video was VERY helpful, I feel I can look at the 35mm as my general wide lens, but now I see the use of the 50mm over the 85mm, but I think I would like to have both in my bag, because you know you dont want to be close in some cases maybe the bridge is not as approachable or something, so that 85mm will have it's use, also in bigger spaces. But I could see in a tight space going between the 35 and 50mm because I would natrally have to be closer.. Very interesting, great comparisons. What amazing oranges you get from those flowers, I assume they are all "fake flowers" lol as I have never seen anything like that, but damn they look so awesome, that is my new favourite colour!

Nice content mate. Subscribed. One question 85mm 1.4 and 135mm 1.8 for someone who owns a macro lens and dabbles between street weddings and product. What would you suggest is the better buy

Hey Dude! Thanks so much! Between 85 and 135 I’d say 85 is more versatile.

Did you shoot all those shots wide open at f/1.4? You were able to get both models in focus with it wide open?

I'm not able and believe not all were take wide open... it's hard to capture both eyes sharp with 35/1.4 and to be honest, dslr is not capable to do it properly... maybe with dpaf
