BUT... i also carry Tamron 28-75, Nikon D800 with the 70-200 2,8, 105 Macro, etc, etc..... every wedding i go with a HUGE amount of gear.... i need to improve that, so i love the idea of going with just 2 primes and that´s it ...... Great Video Teppo !!

Pretty much 35mm and 85mm lense is the standard set up for prime duo bodies set up, and lenses to the addition is a plus!! I am using Nikon D850 and Z6 with adapter with Tamron g2 series 35mm and 85mm, plus the 24-70 g2 and 70-200 g2, as backup and wider angle and longer reach.

When I first started shooting weddings for a photographic studio, I was supplied with a medium format camera with a normal lens. Shot many weddings with just one lens, a flash unit, and an assistant. When I started shooting weddings for myself, I used two medium format cameras with a normal lens, a wide lens, and a telephoto lens. When I started shooting digital weddings, I used two Nikon SLRs with 35mm f/2, 85mm f/1.8, and 180mm f/2.8 Nikon manual focus lenses. Later, I upgraded and used 35mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 180mm f/2.8 Nikon lenses. The 85mm f/1.4 was the only auto focus. For backup, I had an extra Nikon digital SLR body with three Nikon auto focus zoom lenses (14-24mm f/2.8, 28-70mm f/2.8, and 80-200mm f/2.8). I also carried a 105mm f/2.8 Nikon macro for close-ups and tight portraits.

Man, your Nikon SLR setup is my current DSLR setup for weddings, using a D4S and a pair of D700s. I use the 35 F2, 85 1.8, the 180 2.8, and the 80-200 2.8. The 80-200 has prime lens characteristics IMO, the results are amazing. And I just love what I get from the 180, I love it so much that I will go the distance for shots with it!

I feel like with so many different ways to shoot a wedding or event, it is hard to decide on what we want. It is all about personal taste in photos (unless the lighting or space cause you to require a specific lens). On one hand the primes give the great shallow depth. On the other hand a nice zoom means you could use one body (with a backup put away if you need it) and just have the camera in your hand with no additional things to hold you back from getting in some flexing positions.

First wedding I shot I got awesome images for a friend with a 60mm macro lens on aps-c so - yeah I've been on the prime ride. That's close enough to an 85mm prime as makes no odds - but slower. Now I've got the zooms and a few primes and full frame. I shoot dance, events and even sports and the light is always terrible. 70-200 f/4 (the f/2.8 is great too - just heavier) handles nearly everything but a 50mm f/1.4 or a 35mm f/1.4 would be my best complementary lens to that for a wedding. Those 2 lenses are 90% there. What's missing is the 100mm f/2.8 macro IS - jewellery, detail, close-ups - all a part of the story in a collage.
@allencrider
@allencrider 4 жыл бұрын
I agree about your choice of using primes. If it was me doing weddings, and I was wealthy enough, I would go medium format with a couple of Fujifilm GFX 50R cameras and similar prime lenses. Weight for two cameras with 45mm f/2.5 and a 110mm f/2.0 is 3050 grams. Your Canon outfit is 3805 grams! The Fuji handles pretty fast, though the autofocus isn't as good as Canon's.

Lenses were 50, 35, and 90 for formal portraits. 6 rolls of 36 per wedding. you are not the only one who used two 2 cameras and 2 lenses mostly. He made enough to send 3 children to expensive private college. My wedding was done with a TLR Rolliie and an occasional mutar.

Constantly struggling to decide my preferred combo for most of the day: 28-75mm f2.8 and the 135mm GM f1.8 Or 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 Better quality/sharpness on the first pair but the 135mm is a bit more niche and most shots would be with the tamron. The second option, not as good sharpness but better bokeh and 85mm more versatile than the 135mm. I’ve toyed with the idea of 35mm and the 135mm but I feel that’s too big a gap! 🤷🏻‍♂️

There are just more reasons to use zoom lens other than “being lazy”. When you use wide lenses like 24, 35 to shoot a group of people, you don’t shoot 1.4, so it looses the benefit, of course if you want to, you have the option. But what I want to say is it is really no point to talk down about using zoom lens. I know a lot of famous photographers being shooting weddings with zoom lenses, and their work are amazing!

The one time where I would have preferred zoom lenses is when I shot at a church that had very restricted rules about where the photographer could stand so I was limited with where I could be and how much zooming with my feet I could do. Luckily I did have zoom lenses at that time but if I didn't I may not have been able to get some of the shots I did.

I personally believe that prime lenses aren't good for reportage shoots during weddings. Yes, primes are more faster than zooms and they have better bokeh, BUT... these days ISO is powerful enough to work with 2.8 or 4 F-stops in low light conditions and what's more valuable in zooms is the fact that working with zooms you will get more genuine emotions shots because shooting process is much faster than with zooms and what's even more important IT'S more discreet.

Hi Teppo. Kristian from Norway here. I know you switched to Sony. I am a Sony shooter too. Have you recognised the stripes in the pictures when shooting into the sun? I struggle with this. Very unfortunate when they appear in someones face. Try placing the sun directly behind the heads. Appreciate your thoughts on this. 🙂 It is probably an autofocus grid problem on the sensor.

HA! I'm going into a wedding with prime lens, I was trying to decide between a 35mm and a 50mm as my second lens, I've been leaning toward the 35 for the same reasons you gave lol.

I shot a wedding video (on my channel if anyone is curious) with 2 super cheap Lumix GX85 cameras, with a Sigma 30mm (60mm equiv.) F/1.4 and a Sigma 56mm (112mm equiv.) F/1.4! By shooting with primes, I tricked some people into thinking I was using a high end bokeh-licious full frame camera. Ended up making back more than the cost of one of those bodies in one video project, with the couple and their families were really happy with the outcome! I'm saving up for a Lumix G9 now!

That is basically my setup except with 5dmk3 and the 85 and 35 EF 1.4 lenses. I’ll switch to the 16-35 for the dancing shots during the reception. I want to jump to the R system but have to wait until we can get two card slots, I get too nervous about loosing photos with just one card in a camera. Also our wedding season in Florida is the exact opposite of yours November to May

Thanks for putting this out there. I am getting back into wedding photography after a 12 year hiatus. I have sold all of my zoom lenses and I now only own primes. My plan is to use the 50mm as my main lens on one camera, and either the 85mm or 100mm on the second camera. For me, the 35mm seems a bit too wide on a full frame camera, and the 50mm seems to keep me in the "comfort zone" distance better than the 35. I will also have my 135 F2.0 close by for the occasional reach-across-the-room shot, and a 28mm close by for the few wide group shots. To some, it may seem like a pain to keep so many different lenses around that need to be switched out, and in that respect, a zoom lens seems to make more sense. But I can tell you that since I have switched to primes, my photographs are sharper, and I can really get shallower depth of field with the primes as compared to zoom lenses. As I learn to use primes to their fullest, they seem to be more versatile than a zoom lens. I know it sounds weird, but you just have to experience it for yourself.

food photography and wedding photography are very different, I work with wedding, food and real estate. wedding photography is more at the moment type of work, many things out there can be change contently, example weathers, your clients bride and groom, another people that you have to photograph for, background(or I should say the wedding venue that you are in) things that are you can't control; and we need to have a set posts and ideas to adapt situations. For food, we can always to use the gears we have to get the best and most satisfy shots even after many many tries for one product shot, and we can use longer time for set up get the perfect one. Lastly, I think wedding is more into time management, because time doesn't wait for you when we are shooting the wedding everything will goes on even you are not ready for it. Food you can take a longer time to construct your composition, lighting, angle, backdrop sets, these things are all able to control . These are only my person thought, if anyone of you out there have better and different ideas please let me know too.
