In this lecture, Ambeth Ocampo sheds light on the Magellan and Lapu-Lapu of collective Philippine imagination, and discusses how history can be used as a tool for both inclusion and exclusion.
Ambeth Ocampo is a public historian whose research covers the late nineteenth-century Philippines: its art, culture, and the heroes who figure in the birth of the nation. He writes a widely read Editorial Page column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and moderates a growing Facebook Fan Page. Ocampo is a Professor and former Chairperson of the Department of History, School of Social Sciences in the Ateneo de Manila University
The full learning packet (transcripts, slides, etc.) will be available on arete.ateneo.edu/connect/magi....

Thanks Dr. Ocampo! Your similar lecture today (March 15) for the Quincentennial Commemorations in Guiuan really highlights the importance of looking at history at different viewpoints. Yes, we must do away with the Euro-centric vision but we cannot make the same mistake in bending history to satisfy ultra-nationalistic viewpoints. One can only hope that the way history is taught in school would focus on critical thinking rather than memorizing incorrect or misleading facts. I believe this year's commemoration events message is on the right path, that is, to celebrate the feat of circumnavigating the world and the kindness and humanity our ancestors showed to tired and weary travelers.

I love the word "arrived." It's as plain as it is for the fact that he never knew where he was. Thank you for this.

I agree with you on the appropriateness of the verb “arrived” as opposed to “discovered” when talking about Magellan’s coming to the Phil. My answer to your question towards the end of your lecture is this: We should learn from the events in our history but we must liberate ourselves from it and move forward.

Ang Hindi Lumingon sa Pinanggalingan Hindi Makaparoroon sa Patutungohan.. this means you are not Stranger where Ever you Go... The Philippines is our Home and Country and We are NOT Foreigner to the Birth Place of Our Soul... Our Lost Eden mentioned in Line 2 of Paragraphs 1 and 13 of Mi Ultimo Adios..Clearly State that Pilipinas was the Birth Place of 16 Million Pilipinos from The Past since the beginning of Age of the Birth of Pilipinas (Pearl) at the Sea of The Orient NOT A PEARL OF CHINESE

Antonio Pigafetta probably lied. I don't know if this is accurate and maybe you can shed some light on this if this is just a mere speculation. I read a story that the crew actually killed him so they could claim all the money that the expedition made when they took it back to Spain.
