History provides lessons, and is ever relevant. But it does not repeat itself, argues rockstar historian Ambeth Ocampo in this timely talk.
As historians go, Ambeth Ocampo is a superstar. He has tens of thousands of followers on his facebook page. He lectures to standing room only crowds… and this was well before Heneral Luna reignited popular interest in Philippine history.
Ambeth graduated from both Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University, and he now teaches in both Ateneo and La Salle, as well as the University of the Philippines and San Beda College.
He has served as chairman of the National Historical Institute (NHI) in 2002 and of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) from 2005 to 2007.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I could not agree more! This has been my stand in ALL my history/Rizal debate. Aguinaldo should never be considered as a National Hero.

What do we take from this lecture? Nothing has changed. It has been more than a century since we discovered who we are as a people and yet nothing has changed. Other nations grew, other people matured, other societies developed as the years went on. And yet we are still in 1896, stuck in petty regionalism, political squabbles, and worse, willful ignorance. We as a people lack true and heartfelt patriotism; we love our country's facade and symbols, but we are apathetic to its inner being. We still have a long way to go as a people. Rizal, Bonifacio, Mabini, Luna, et al..., flaws and all, were the heroes we needed but never deserved.

If anything, we Filipinos should "seek out" the "bitter medicine". More often than not, it's what keeps us from keeping our heads high, and solves our problems than the tempting sweetness of lies, hypocrisy, and worldliness.

I met him in book signing once and i had no idea who he was, i just thought he's a nice author signing for a mostly empty room. I only realized he's actually a big deal when my classmates and teacher for Rizal studies recognized his name and was even impressed by his signature on it

I met him in a book fair in a Makati hotel years ago. At that, i have no idea who he is, he's just some writer there with a massive but empty hall. He was really nice and really engaging. He took pictures. Even when he was about to leave his hall, he still signed Rizal Without The Overcoat for me. I only found out that he was famous and distinguished when my Rizal Studies teacher saw my book and the signature in it, and when my classmate recognized his name when we were talking about history books

Our past history topic is all about your book which "Rizal without the overcoat" some of your accusations and opinions there are unbelievable especially when you say that Rizal is not really a doctor or a registered/licensed doctor! But, sir you know I really admire how you wrote your books, every context is clean and understandable hope to meet you someday☺️
