This track is just killer! Utterly brutal, and killer groove! Great analogy on Jannicks playing, looking forward to De futura, which is this albums high point! :)

Hey, you know what's exciting about this? This means you are doing the intense cosmic brutality that is DE FUTURA next, which is understandably the most famous track from the album. Long song Saturday soon?

That wiggly keyboard is most likely a synthesizer set to extreme modulation. Loving this album so far.

Interesting. Saw Magma at a Vancouver club (100 people or so) back in the nineties. The drummer was the focal point. They had CDs for sale in-between sets. I bought one. Didn't last long in my collection, but I did, that very same night, meet my first Vancouver "lady-friend". Total serendipity. You never see love coming. It just happens whenever. Keep up the good work! LL

No one can just obliterate a groove quite like Christian Vander and Jannick Top. I think it's probably fair to say that the appeal of this group is lost on a lot of "symphonic prog" fans who are drawn mainly to complex classically-influenced melodies and chord changes and the like. I love all that stuff, but to me, groove is king, and the really good symphonic groups are good because they don't lose sight of that. And yes....I am salivating for "De Futura". 😉

Yeah, many of my favorite drummers in the avant- garde progressive point to Christian Vander. He's been refered to as the French Buddy Rich. Here's some names you should know: Chris Cutler, Daniel Denis, Hasse Bruniusson, Guilhem Meier, Dave Kerman, to name a few.

Yes, I can certainly hear the big band influence at play here. Vander is indeed a busy drummer and it's almost impossible to take your eyes off him when they play live. Tracks like this highlight how 'alien' a genre Zeuhl is though. (I'm just imagining the Buddy Rich Big Band trying something like this - it might just work!) Meanwhile, De Futura is even better - Zombies after using a heavy heavy bass to prepare some Brain Tartare.

You might enjoy this live version (nice and obsessive and repetitive - which, with Magma, is a virtue for some reason). kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5DCn32dqLGad7c (I think I prefer it to the album version. One aspect of Magma is that for any concert the option is open to completely reinvent any song. They're a bit more like classical musicians than most rock bands, that way. MDK exists in several significantly different forms, in the various live recordings, for instance.) (And aside: your oodoo voodoo was impecable, and your second Yunnick - for Jannick - was the right one. Unless it's a zsh like in the French version of Jacques. Maybe. I'm not sure.)

Evening, Justin. Dave from That There London. Christian Vander can Bang The Drum All Day. I think it's a fairly routine jazz rocker, and it reminds me a little of a classical piece, Time, Forward! by Georgy Sviridov (although that's much more dramatic), but it's taken to a new level by the drumming. I've seen Magma several times live, and each time I was mesmerised by Vander, who is a force of nature. Yes, he's incredible - powerful yet ridiculously intricate. P.S. my song ref Bang The Drum All Day is by Todd Rundgren.

I saw them when this album came out. Truly amazing. They have had many of the greatest French musicians ever. Just wait for "De Futura'. It is mind-blowing! If Magma carry on after Christian Vander they'll need 3 drummers to replace him.

I'd put the French musicians of Gong, up against anybody in Magma. For example, Pierre Moerlin was not only superior to Christian Vander, he was one of the most creative and dynamic percussionists ever!
@BaldJean Жыл бұрын
@@Katehowe3010 Both Moerlen (not Moerlin) are on the same level regarding their drumming skills (both studied drumming), but their styles are very different. For a short time Moerlen even joined Magma. Both Magma and Gong had incredible musicians.

Came here after binge watching season 2 of the Russian zombie series The Day After and deciding that it was taking too much of an emotional toll for me to move into season 3 without a break. This wasn't bad at all, fitted my mood quite well. The drumming was outstanding.

As much as i try, and believe me i have, there's so many things about this band that just don't connect with me. I suppose it's possible to like both, but give me the whimsical musicality of Gong every time! 🍵

Gong had their crazy moments, but the anti-musicality of Magma was frequently harsh, like 20th C. fascist architecture made into sound.

You could do worse than to have a listen to 'Tëha', from Magma's 2012 album 'Félicité Thösz''. It's just 5:15 long and, while not even close to being like a Gong piece, is very musical and - I choose these two words deliberately - instantly rewarding.

You might want to check out their album Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré then. Zombies is an extract from a much longer MDK-style suite Vander composed but never recorded in full back in the 70s (though other segments made it onto live and studio albums of that era). A reformed Magma eventually recorded the whole suite in 2009, and the Zombies section closes the 20+ minute centrepiece of the album with nearly 9 minutes of furious intensity!
