We just called them OMD, since Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is so long. This 1980 song was one of the first I heard by them, and they entered the charts at the same time as two other major synth pop bands, Depeche Mode and Human League, did, so I always associate the three together. In my mind, this song goes with Depeche Mode's 1981 "New Life."

Seconded! I'm named after Jeanne D'Arc (aka Joan Of Arc) and have a picture of her on the wall. I ♥ Maid of Orleans but you have to get past the weird synth sounds of the first 35 seconds (which I still love because it's OMD!). Maid of Orleans is the song I used to learn how to play the drums - fabulous drum part but it's a great song overall. I love OMD 🥰

The keyboards on this song are epic. There's that wonderful riff that is repeated throughout the song but underneath that is a keyboard line that repeats a slightly ominous sequence of notes, it produces a tension that says this is not just some happy disco song. Such an interesting song, both lyrically and musically.

Enola Gay was the name of the plane, named for the pilot's mother. The bomb they dropped was called "Little Boy". Three days later Nagasaki was bombed...they named that bomb "Fat Man". The 'kiss' they referred to in the song I suspect was the nuclear fallout...aka radiation burn/poisoning that anyone in the vicinity of the blast suffered if they didn't immediately die in the initial blast. Such a happy sounding tune, very dark subject matter. A lot of 80's music was about the potential of WW3 happening in our lifetime. Thanx for playing that song...never gets old!

This was not just "a war plane", this was the one that dropped the first atomic bomb. This song has so much packed in it, Enola Gay was the name of the pilot's mum, and he named the plane after her. The atomic bomb they dropped was nicknamed Little Boy. Also the line "It's 8:15, the time that's always been", is because that was the time at which the bomb was dropped, so when the clocks broke the hands stayed pointing at 8:15 forever.

"Enola Gay" is an anti-war song by the English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), and the only single taken from their second studio album Organisation (1980). Written by lead vocalist and bassist Andy McCluskey, it addresses the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the aircraft Enola Gay on 6 August 1945, toward the conclusion of World War II. As is typical of early OMD singles, the song features a melodic synthesizer break instead of a sung chorus.

It's an anti-war song, at heart. The cold war (between USSR and USA) concerned younger generations well into the 80s. Some artists expressed it in songs like this. Others being, Frankie Goes To Hollywood's - Two Tribes, and Nik Kershaw's - I Won't Let the Sun Go Down On Me. Two others I recommend for reaction.

Their first album with the unusual 'grid sleeve, was among the first lot of albums I bought with my own money. The second album (with Enola Gay) I only bought on cassette 😅. I saw OMD in Manchester in 1983.

"Enola Gay" was the name of the bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima; it was the pilot's mother's name). Early OMD. In the U.S., it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 but did reach #34 on the Dance chart (debuted 11/1/80 and stayed for 22 weeks..

More commonly known as OMD. My friend went to see them a couple of nights ago and they are still sounding fantastic. My 80s nostalgia keeps going as I'm off to see Heaven 17 in November and also hoping to book to see Shalamar 🙂

If you are listening carefully to the lyrics, you will hear Andy describing the plane that carried the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Hence the name of the song, is the name of the airplane Enola Gay. Although the song is quite upbeat, it's telling a very sombre story.

My wife and I have one fun memorie of OMD. We met in a bar early 80's where they were playing Talking loud and clear by OMD. At first glance our eyes met, softly playing OMD in the background. It was love at first sight. Although it's a little bit of a corny song it became our song, special thing is that the song is about love playing at the moment we fell in love. It also shows another more playful side of OMD. So you are loving the 80's synth pop? This man in fact is the pioneer of synthpop, Gary Numan started his sound late 70's people found it weird because they never heard synthesizers like that and called it a one day fly, history shows different synths rule. Other pioneers from the late 70's early 80's are Kraftwerk from their track autobahn to The Model, all very special. I recommend starting with autobahn that's typically Kraftwerk and then try The Model it will surprise you. Kraftwerk can be dark but also very sunny. Love Thomas

Kraftwerk are German, that's why the record is called Autobahn which means Highway or in England, Motorway.

These guys were some of the OG’s in picking up the innovative electronic work of artists like Kraftwerk, or Bowie’s Berlin period, and taking it fully pop. Even so they had an experimental side of their own as well. A really strong band that is still out there … they’ve even put out three good reunion albums in the 21st century.

One of their early songs "Red Frame White Light" was all about a phone box they used as their "office" in the early days. It happens to be not far from where I grew up. Recently the local council decided to remove it but there was a petition and it was put back in place. It's now a tiny museum/tribute to the two local lads. It can be seen on the corner of Greenwood Road and Birkenhead Road, opposite the Railway Pub in Meols (pronounced Mells) on the Wirral in Merseyside UK.(Google Earth 53°24'3.58"N 3° 9'30.02"W). Absolutely brilliant band, even if the lead singer had a very "special" way of dancing.
