Putting it out there, the variation in ice speed routes makes it more interesting than speed climbing (to me at least).
@jakobjas42122 жыл бұрын
Yeah speed climbing would be infinitely more interesting if the routes were different every comp. Can you imagine if the boulders were all exactly the same every comp, no-one would watch.
@imbaguitar2 жыл бұрын
@@jakobjas4212 Should they make a different track every time too for the 100m sprint?
@bennordstrom2 жыл бұрын
@@imbaguitar Yeah, it's a good point. Just like the 100m sprint is measuring the fastest runner on that specific layout (straight flat ground for 100m), the speed comps measure the fastest time on that specific climbing route. I think part of the problem is that there is nothing really great or interesting about THAT route that somehow got established as the one we need to care about testing times on. It's a weird assortment of jugs that are not really laid out to test some specific thing. Where as a flat, straight track has obvious value as a baseline for testing running speed.
@jakobjas42122 жыл бұрын
@@imbaguitar you’re comparing apples to oranges. Climbing as a sport has an almost infinite range of moves, interpretations of beta, styles of climbing which running simply doesn’t have. Speed wall removes all of those variables. It would be similar to having a hangboard comp at world cup events to see who can hang off a 20mm edge the longest. It’s climbing relevant but it eliminates 95% of the variables that makes climbing what it is as a sport. You don’t even have to change the speed route that much each time, but enough to make it require climbing skill and not just muscle memory.
@CamMackay962 жыл бұрын
@@jakobjas4212 the problem then becomes with changing routes, the times will be slower and thus make it far less exciting to watch as a sport. There needs to be a balance between purity for the sports sake and some considerations for making it accessible, since that's the only way the sport will grow.
