Just adding to the video: Founder of Samsung Mr. Lee Byung Chul also made CJ (Major food, Major Entertainment, logistics, etc), SSG (biggest malls, etc), Saehan, and Hansol. Also, he partially owned n influenced Korean news platforms... People outside of Korea don't really realize this but Samsung family owns Korea... There is no emperor system in Korea but that family line is basically the one.. It's kind of insane how much they own but the companies are just not named "Samsung". They are bigger than how they look from outside. Apple is bigger in assets but the power this family has is up to a debate. I think Apple has more power and money though. But, I only said "up to a debate" because USA has so many powerful companies n family trees. Whereas, Korea only has 2 family: Samsung & Hyundai. Political power can be debatable because other major companies in USA has to share the pie. Hopefully, South Korea can become like USA, where USA has various power horse firms, rather than just one big powerful company. Lastly, the video edit was legit !! Thank you for taking away my sleep time lol jkjk

America had a similar issue with the do called robber barons ( Rockefeller, Carnegie, JP Morgan, Van Der Bilt etc etc ) what Korea needs is some strong anti monopoly laws and a restructuring of the economy around mid-sized companies....Though that may be a bit difficult due to the massive power that these families have it's not impossible, but it would take strong political figures like Roosevelt in the US who would stand up to them, or the people uniting against them, good luck to you and may your country continue to prosper!

You have to understand that they did not have completely humble beginnings; these were people who came from some money and a good foundation to start on. My great-grandaunt was married to the founder of LG, who grew up around these people who founded Samsung and other companies. They were all college-educated (uncommon at that time in history) and had servants/housemaids and money to travel for leisure or to learn a trade. My great-great-grandfather apparently squandered all his wealth having fun in China while his colleagues were learning about sugarcanes and other goods.

How did LG manage to become a Chaebol and Samsung's competitor when Samsung had so much influence and power in South Korea?
@coversbyrichard Жыл бұрын
LG is nowhere near as big as Samsung. LG is primarily electronics and engineering conglomerate with some businesses in chemicals and power generation (electric grid). Samsung is more than that - they are known in the West as an electronics company but Samsung is also banking, finance, investments, insurance, manufacturing, shipbuilding, petrochemicals, import/export, clothing, etc etc… The reason why even as a Korean, don’t buy Samsung is because I view Samsung as a “jack of all trades, master of none”. I’ve always found LG’s electronics and home appliances to always be of a higher quality than Samsungs which is why all my appliances are LG and not Samsung. LG is a Chaebol with a focus and control of a specific industry, which is why it’s smaller. Samsung is a Chaebol based on overall size across the board… if that makes sense… I think LG’s business is way more ethical (not saying much) than Samsung. There is a problem when you have one company that is the everything company…

I think you failed to mention how big the impact of the major reason how korea's top 5 corps (such as samsung) gained their power actually was. Namely the state support which was implemented in the 70s and originally meant to grow korea's economy as a whole by supporting certain private businesses. While this worked rather well originally , it nowadays (ever since the 90s really) has lead to some major problems. Mostly the small business issue you mentioned.
@spinyslasher65862 жыл бұрын
He mentions it in part 2 bro. Timestamped: 5:00
@theStamax2 жыл бұрын
@@spinyslasher6586 He did, but imo he failed to point out how big of a factor this actually was. Too much focused on the impact of the founder (cause that's generally what sells ... "rags to riches" and such). Truth is, it was a massive stroke of luck that made Samsung the giant it is today. Hence why I stated "how big the impact ..." and not "the impact".
@spinyslasher65862 жыл бұрын
@@theStamax the entire second part of the video, and the ending of the video, was used to showcase how Samsung used government support and corruption to assert dominance on smaller businesses. I doubt you watched the whole video, because he literally says in end that Samsung's success is due to the founder having deep political connections.
@theStamax2 жыл бұрын
@@spinyslasher6586 well I did. Granted I may have formulated the comment better in hindsight. I just felt that the way the story was built up and ultimately concluded was too much focused on the individual, while the larger factor was downplayed. I apologize if this has caused any misunderstanding and I'll try to be more concise in future comments. Admittedly the "how big the impact ..." alone was likely not clear enough on what my actual criticism was.
@tedkaczynskiamericanhero3916 Жыл бұрын
That actually makes sense because the US likes to crush small businesses as well. Heavy handed regulations written by the big corporations have ensured this. Also, I've never been to Korea at all, but I think I would love it. Spicy food, good BBQ, and every Korean movie or show I've watched (with subtitles) is always great! Seems they keep politics out of entertainment, and I don't want somebody's political beliefs jammed down my throat, even if they agree with me and especially if they disagree. These days watching anything from Hollywood is like being a masochist. Tell me I'm racist because a white male, etc. is not only ironic and hypocritical, but disgusting to hear

In Korea, the basic highest inheritance tax rate is 50%, but the inheritance tax for the largest shareholder of a company is 60%. Additionally, When grandparents pass on their inheritance to their grandchildren, omitting their children, a 30% penalty tax is applied for the missing generation, and if the beneficiary is a minor, a 40% penalty tax is applied. As a result, more and more business owners are having to sell their companies to pay taxes, So which company would be willing to pay a high price to buy that company? If every country imposed such taxes, would there still be companies making luxury goods like Swiss watches?

Samsung was not the only chaebol. And Lee was definitely NOT Park's good friend. Not even close. I don't know the relative size of the chaebols in the 1960s, but in 1996 Samsung was definitely not the largest. Before Daewoo collapse in the 1997 crisis, it was the second largest chaebol. And the largest was Hyundai. Both Hyundai and Daewoo's founders were much closer to Park. After the 1997 crisis, the government forced all the chaebols to rationalize and sell their non-core businesses to each other. And this is were Samsung lucked out. Their core business was electronics and semiconductors, and these industries grew at a much faster pace in the next two decades than nearly everything else (worldwide). Which is not to say that Samsung did nothing. After all, they did compete with, and defeat other major companies from other countries. This partly explains Samsung's dominant position as the largest chaebol in Korea today. They were always one of the largest, but was not always the largest.
@cck49782 жыл бұрын
I mean you are taking things a bit out of the context and presenting a biased view. S.Korea was literally one of the poorest countries in the world after the civil war and the government had to consolidate and concentrate on few industries with good leadership that'd help boost the economy; they had no time to be experimental and mess around as people were literally starving due to everything being destroyed from the war. To get around this, they've decided to put their focus on few promising upcoming business conglomerates which lead to formation of Chaebol. Does it have side effects? Yes like the ones you presented in the video where the companies are too tightly coupled with the government but on the other hand, it's also one of the reasons why S.Korea's economy was able climb up so rapidly because things were highly coordinated and focused.
