You always make good quality videos. This video shows how much time and disassembly it took just to clean a switch. This is one reason why no one wants to work on these.

A rotary mode switch is perhaps one of the biggest trouble spots in any modern VCR. When the contacts become oxidized, it develops high resistance and malfunctions. No need to replace a part unless it's shorted, open or damaged in some way. A simple cleanup is all that's needed in many cases. Great results and no parts needed so a reasonably inexpensive repair as well - customer will be happy.

I have a Magnavox combo very similar to this one with the nearly identical problem this one displayed. My fix was far simpler and faster though: the VCR part hadn't been used in years and the head was froze up. All I had to do was spin it clockwise a bunch of times till it spun freely. Inserted my tape and all functions worked as they should. Do this before you start to disassemble the unit and hopefully you'll get the same results.

Hello. I am currently trying to fix my VCR using the same method in this video. I am wondering if there is another option to clean that spot you used the stainless steel toothbrush on.
@stefanslaw11404 жыл бұрын
Nice Vid. Was able to clean the mode switch without desoldering anything. Just tilt the VCR unit up 3/4". Used a GC Electronics fiberglass 'pencil brush', acetone, Q-tips, and dielectric grease. Rotor popped right back on. Never test any VCR with the top cover off unless the room is fairly dark. Light messes up the IR or opto-transistor sensors.
@sailingpittsburgh4 жыл бұрын
Do you have to remove the entire control board? Could you explain your procedure in a bit more detail? Not sure I get the 3/4" tilt. Do you have to pry the rotor off?

Thanks for your amazing insightful videos. Where do you get your service manuals? I have a Magnavox MDR161V /F7 that looks virtually identical to this ZV427MG9 A. that a schematic would be extremely helpful for. I owned and ran a 50 year old one man Radio/TV/everything repair shop that I shut down in 2000. I sold off all of my manuals and most of my test equipment and lots of stock. I still have a lot of new VCR parts (ASTI heads, gears, components, etc.), if you're ever looking.

Can you tell me if the Mode Switch can cause the tape to get hung up on the tape transport mechanism upon ejection? The VCR plays tapes OK, it's just that upon pressing Eject, the tape comes up and is pushed out of the VCR but the tape is getting hung up on something inside the tape transport mechanism.

So I have a magnavox dc220mw9 and the cover for the dvd won’t stay closed. I’m wondering you can show me the inside of the font cover to see if the spring is in the wrong spot. It just flips open until I manually close it. Or if there is something it’s supposed to latch in the inside to spring close. Can you help???

It runs for exactly seven seconds every time. It can fast forward OK. Any ideas of what the problem is? Maybe no pulse from the capstan? thx

What would cause a Symphonic SC313B combo TV/VCR to shut down after 5-10 seconds of being turned on. If I put a tape in it will play the tape no problems. As soon as I hit the Stop button 5-10 secs it will turn off the TV. The only trick I found is if I disconnect the power cord and wait for lets say 30 mins, then plug the cord back in with a tape in it and hold the tape from coming out it will stay on. As soon as I eject the tape the TV shuts off or if I just manually shut off the TV then turn it back on it will shut off in 5-10 seconds. I have to repeat the process of unplugging the TV for some period of time then power up with a tape in it and hold it so it won't come out then the TV will work again. Any clues what the fix is?
@norcal7153 жыл бұрын
Probably a mode select switch or cassette in-out switch issue. It sounds like it is trying to eject further and that is what is shutting it off.
@n1kkri3 жыл бұрын
@@norcal715 The interesting thing is the only time the TV stays on is when it's playing a tape.

NEVER !! EVER !! use cotton swabs aka qtips to clean video heads this will cause damage, you can however use them to clean tape paths etc. also check the auto head cleaner to see if its dirty.... actually scratch that, just remove it completely and toss it in the garbage. you'll do the customer a big favor.
@norcal7152 жыл бұрын
Only been using cotton swabs to clean video heads for the better part of 40 years. I think I will stick to what works for me. I will continue to discard the head cleaners, unless they are in pristine condition.

What??? Please clarify your question/statement! Are you referring to the dielectric grease? If so, I have only been using it for about 40 years now and I have several VCRs of my own that are over 30+ years old and have not had to service the mode select switch after the dielectric grease treatment. I have had to replace belts and idlers though. There is no fix for consumable items.

Terrible design! Funai made the last VCRs in 2015. Cheap parts and stupid quality- marked the end of VHS. Our magnavox combo drive had a dirty center tape sensor. Cleaned with alcohol and works perfect. You should remove that foam head cleaner. It's very problematic
