I picked up one of these recently on cl. I had the exact same issue with the vcr side and this is the only thing I've found that specifically addressed it. It would start the tape fine then power off after 8 seconds or so. I opened it up and cleaned it and now working good as new! Thanks so much.

Picked one of these at a thrift store for $7, EXACT same issue with the tape mechanism. Your video was one of the first to come up! cleaned the detector and it’s all happy. Thanks for sharing your repairs !

Well done Steve, The caps will get you every time 😉 I've just repaired a BENQ monitor that had faulty caps and dry solder joints on the transformer. It's great to keep these things out of landfill.

What a joy it is to watch an expert practicing his craft! Always taking the time to check the problem points, doing what needs to be done instead of the absolute minimum which is (sadly) the new normal. And to top it all off, he showed how to clean the optical pickup which fixed my Magnavox! A win-win for me!

Just fixed a dell monitor with the same problem - blinking power light and no display. Replaced an obvious bad cap and now works fine.

Thanks so much. I repair stuff for a living but never worked on a VCR. got one that has this problem and assumed it was some bad caps, but this video most likley confirmed it.

I did a switchmode power supply repair video last week, it was doing the same pulsing so I knew it was the power supply, it’s a pretty clear symptom when you know what it means.

Mine just started doing that exact same thing. Mine is model ZV457MG9. I pulled the top off and peeked in under the dvd player and top of the same cap is bulged up. I found replacement capacitors at eBay. Even though I am an amateur I have worked on electronics and can probably replace the capacitor with not much trouble. Disconnecting those delicate ribbon cables is my main concern - they look so fragile.

Great video. I have this unit and recently I have no video. Its black with like a fuzzy signal. Sounds works great and so does everything else. I have tried cleaning the heads. Anything else I can do to possibly salvage this unit?

I have a Funai ZV427FX4 version from QVC that I bought years ago and never used. There are a number of videos that declared all of these as "junk". I'm hoping it it'll convert a pile of VCR tapes to DVD's before it poops out. Where did you learn VCR tape/DVD player repair?

I have this same model and after not being in use for some time, I had the same symptoms with flashing POWER LED, flashing time display and CD\DVD green lights. I opened the case as you did, and can you believe it - the 4700uf 6.3v capacitor was domed and slightly leaking, just as in your video. Is this a project that could be done DIY with only freshman electronics experience or best taken to a small electronics/appliance repair professional? I see that I can buy the capacitors on Amazon.

We have a couple of these but the clock display is blank for each. Otherwise seem to work fine. Is this a common issue caused by bad caps?
@garygullikson63494 жыл бұрын
Question? Do electrolytic capacitors have limited shelf life, limited life in use, or go bad over time in unused devices?
@norcal7154 жыл бұрын
They do dry up over time and they really enjoy being exercised. So yes they do have a limited shelf life.

Does that Magnavox vcr require a fast or slow blow fuse. Mine blew a fuse. It's a 1amp 250v fuse that looks like a coil spring inside.
@norcal7153 жыл бұрын
Most likely that is a slow blow, fast blow fuses normally just have a straight wire inside.

Funai is garbage. Older VHS VCR’s are much better includes RCA for their “Selectavision” line, Panasonic for their “Omnivision” line, JVC which was the creator of the VHS VCR, and so much more. Sony only made the Betamax VCR and it was top notch with different mechanisms than the VHS mechanism, and Betamax was developed by Sony.
