Magnepan 1.7i - The Sweet Spot

The 3 audio fools talk about the Magnepan 1.7i, and shockingly, we all agree. I believe the 1.7i is the sweet spot in the line, offering substantially better performance than the LRS and 0.7, and comes very close to the 3.7i at a fraction of the cost

I’m really happy with my 1.7i in a 11’ x 17’ room. My first Maggie were 1.6, then graduated to a pair of 3.6 but found them too over powering for the small room so “downgraded” to the current 1.7i. Incidentally the 1.7i outperformed my other high end bookshelves costing 10 times as much in the same room.

How is the bass? I am using Verity Renzi for over 12 yrs now thinking of changing to something different. my room is almost the same 10.5 x 16.5.

@@albertleung3690 Bass is just adequate so I augment them with a DWM. Maggies present their bass differently from other box type speakers, it “floods” other than “pumps” the room with bass. If set up correctly bass texture from Maggies can be superb. Before changing to 1.7i it is important to know if you can position them correctly, i.e. 6-7 ft from back wall & roughly 0.5 ft from side walls.

@@albertleung3690 DWM’s dipole dispersion characteristic matches better with 1.7i, & is easier to move forward or backward a few inches to compensate the bass level of individual recordings. In small room such as ours it’s more important to get CLEAN rather than deep bass.

First time I listened to Magnapan was after reading the one of the many reviews in the Absolute Sound magazine in the late 1970s early 1980s , back in the day when audio was much simpler and seemingly more fun then it is today. I think Magnapan offers one of the greatest bang for the buck speakers on the market back then and today .

I would also like to say that 1st audition of Magnapan speakers in the very early 1980s I bought them on the spot , I remember how vocal’s were presented so well and that alone sold me . I purchased the 3.? drove them with Threshold Stasis 3 propped the speakers on Mod Squad Tip Toes hooked them up with hideously expensive Mark Levinson speaker wire at $50.00 the pair and when my friends weren’t around out came a mix of golden age 1950 and 60s Jazz and popular music which I still listen too at times ,.Today I still use Magnapan speakers .

I have a similar Maggie story - I was reading a Stereo Review in 1996 after a day of taxes (and during a divorce) when I saw a review of the MMG - it was their entry level speaker at the time, but I was blown away - I'll never go back to push-pull drivers - 19 years later I upgraded to the 1.7i

Get Sublime Acoustic's K231 Active Crossover when introducing a sub into your rig. The best $600 one can spend by far. I've got the 1.7is paired with a REL S/510 and using the K231 as the "frequency traffic cop" the soundstage is magnificent. The rest of my gear is as follows: EverSolo A6 ME for DAC/Streamer thru a Rega Elex acting as my pre and a BAT VK-225 power amp. The K231 sends only 40 HZ and lower to the REL and all other frequencies north of 40 HZ go to the Maggies...which is exactly what they excel at pushing - the blending and balance is superb.

The young man is spot on, great advice. When I listen to my Magnepans I run Bag End Infrasubs 18 inch subs in stereo to augment the last few octaves, fantastic blend, seamless subs with Maggie's! Down to 8htz.

@@carlfuggiasco7495 a great soundtrack is from the movie Titanic where the pipeorgans shudder and shake the room, I didn't even get the effect at the movie theater, didn't know this was in the soundtrack until listening with the Bag End subs! Emerson Lake and Palmers Lucky Man has a Moog bass line that's supremely reproduced, very fast and seamless integration, Wide-screen magazine used them exclusively with Martin Logan speakers for the ability to match the speed of the panels. As an owner of a pair of Maggie 1.7i, I really enjoyed this in depth analysis! I used to have a Paradigm PDR-10 subwoofer in my system. But I did find that the mismatch with the Maggie’s was too distracting and it was a net negative in my system. So I took it out. As for power I run a pair of Bryston 28B3 monoblocks. So I feel I have enough power and headroom on hand for the 1.7i, because they need power. As for performance, I wish that you commented on the fact that these speakers can be greatly improved at both the top and low ends by adding the MyeStands and the Mike Powell jumper and fuse/silver tube upgrades. They have improved my system in noticeable ways. Of course, Wendell disagrees with all of this. But it is what it is.

You guys are speaking my language, Magnepan, Hegel, and I love the Kef Ls50 Meta which I just ordered, saving the right Maggie’s for once my 26.5 foot x 15.5 foot x 7 foot theater room is completed. Seems that Hegel might be the best amp to drive both pairs of speakers.

It's fun watching/listening to all three of you discussing various audio products and sound - it's sorta like being "a fly on the wall" in a private meeting of guys who know what they are talking about. In terms of Magnepan, I can vouch that they are SOLID, SOUND performers and "phenomenal" (sorry LOL) value! I have had "Maggies" in the past but have Dynaudios (fantastic) now due to space restrictions but I would NOT hesitate to get a pair of Magnepans again. Thanks for the fun "meetings!" I'm know Markam fairly well but live in MTL . . . wish I was closer so that I could drop by! But what with social distancing and all these days, maybe that's not such a bad thing : ) . . . for now.

I could not agree with these gentlemen more. Currently running the 1.7 with Bryston 4B3 behind a Tube Preamp. I just played Kiss in Blue and every point he made is spot on. After a year with the 4B3, I have come to the conclusion that nothing needs to be changed. All I do is listen 5-6 hours each evening and am literally lifted up into the music by the Magnepan 1.7. I own a pair of 12 subs but keep them with volume at 0 because they simply are not needed 99% of the time. IMHO so many confuse Forward Bass with good bass and lose the delineation mentioned in this video.

devotee and proud owner of magnepan speakers since 1989 year SMG A, MMG, 1.5QR sub is interesting, but just listen to megi for a short while and enjoy the music because that's all that matters if you want to have a magical sound, buy a magneplanar, connect them with a single ended amplifier and the magic is in the house

Using 1.7i in a 11' x 14' 3-sided room. No need for a sub. Driving them with a pair of Adcom GFA-365 monoblocks. I'm not looking for any new speakers. At least not in my main system.

aaaah the subwoofer with Maggies....I tend to agree....I happen to have one and tend to back it off......it's there to round off the sound stage. So, Said with big orchestral music a sub with maggies can really work turned up a little......but that's just my ears!

Just to follow up, I never used a sub with my Maggies when I had them or any other speakers I had, now I must have a sub even with my current floor standers it makes a huge difference in the sound stage and completes the sound top to bottom I highly recommend a sub or even better two if you have the space.

always enjoy the discussions. just took a demo on these maggies, hate to disagree, but thought the bass was missing. brought my own music, so knew the tunes, and the bottom was missing. they were played with rogue tube equipment and solid state.

Hi great video guys! I once owned the 1.7 Maggie's and did move on to a dynamic speaker because of moving to a smaller room and that bass slam that was mentioned. Anyway I would like to add that the Maggie dwm bass panel would be a better choice than a sub because it is essentially the bass panel of the 3.7i for that seamless Maggie integration. I would recommend buying 2 of them to keep everything coherent, but at that price if you have the space and extra cash the 3.7i is a much better choice because the true ribbon tweeter is one of the greatest tweeters ever in hifi and a bargain for the price they go for. The 3.7i's larger bass panel might make up the need to add anything for bass for some rooms. On the down side that tweeter is faster than the mid and bass sections so it might be harder to make that speaker "dissapear" so I can see why vilip prefers the 1.7i. Sorry about my run on sentence just wanted to add my 2 cents to the conversation! Thanks! Rob

Robert B, I’ve been told by other Maggie owners and people with Magnepan experience that the only reason to move up to the .7’s or 1.7’s is for larger rooms. That the sound signature is pretty much the same between all 3. Like you said, it’s the 3.7’s where things are dramatically different. And I would love to own the true ribbon speaker but that’s. Little too much for my wallet. But at least I get to enjoy a lot of the Magnepan sound and will enjoy them for what they give me, who’s is beautiful, detailed, airy and transparent music like I’ve never had in my home before. Very enjoyable speaker!

I really love planar magnetic headphones and the ones I've heard don't lack bass at all. I think I'd love any of these loudspeakers, but since I really value deep bass, I'd be one of the people who would always wish for as big a bass panel as I could get, or as big as is needed for the room. I'm not a bass-head. I listen at low levels but still want bass, which often just completely disappears when a system is played at conversational volume levels.

I can’t wait to add a sub into the mix with the Maggie’s. It’s going to be the RSL Speedwoofer 10s x 2. It’s that good of a sub. No joke.

So I'm moving my room from a 10x14 room to an 11.5x21. Both have 9 foot ceilings. I tried the original 1.7 in the smaller room, but I did not put the trigger. Now so I not only have more room, but I also now have two Vandersteen 2WQ subs with their adjustable Q and novel configuration, that has worked with every speaker I've tried with them with - Vandersteen 3a Signatures to Wharfedale Denton 80/KEF LS-50 to vintage Altec Valencia's. So my original plan, regardless of what people say, is to try them with the subs crossed over fairly low. When I listened to the 1.7 in the smaller room, there was no sub, and at that time I had a McIntoshMC-402. It actually struggled on more dynamic songs. Trying to narrow down the actual room size, which I don't think you did so well. 11.5x21x9. what speaker would you think does best. I'm thinking you would say either .7 or 1.7, but what say you?

@@adrianlow2114 sounds good. I got the first one about 6 years ago and just the one worked really well. Then last November I saw another one for sale for a fabulous price. Couldn't pass it up. They are both the Q models and they do great - never call attention to themselves but when the low bass is there they put it out. I doubt I'll ever get rid of them.

I have some of the earlier 1.7 Maggies. I drive them with SS amps; either ME850 , with 200+ amps @ 4 ohms, or Parasound JC1 monos with much higher output. I find the speakers sound clear in other than the primary room, while obviously being best defined in that room e.g. doing tasks in other rooms.

Great review, I don't own Maggies at this time but I did many years ago still have the original receipt.I don't have the space now but the LRS would fit.My amp would drive them quite well being high current.I don't think the LRS would be better than what I have now just different but I still love the sound of Maggies great speakers paired with a fast sub or two fantastic!

100% spot on I do own the 1.7i for 2 weeks now and I love them When I add my subs via active crossover something is lost from the overall brilliance of the Maggies. Sadly with some movies you can´t only take the maggies (at certain loudness levels), thats a problem for me. The 1.7i speakers will go into my little nerd cave and I have to figure out if the 20.7 will have the same problem in my home theater living room. I wish they could master even the heaviest scenes from 5.Element or Ready Player One but I´m afraid they can´t, might hold on a bit better as the 1.7i but in the end a sub is needed again. I´m stuck at this point, I don´t want to lose 1% of what the Maggies do with 2-channel music playback, but I would need a solution where I can watch movies without doing much in adding the subs and protecting the Maggies. Maybe a real kickass active crossover and great great subs can handle that so I can injoy both worlds, movies and music without having to switch anything

I have a huge room: 28' x 24' x 15 ft high. I can place the speakers on the long wall, about 8 ft apart and 3 ft into the room. Still lots of space to both sides and above, so is my room TOO big for the 1.7i? One dealer told me the Maggies would sound tinny + terrible without boundary walls and ceiling to act as a cabinet. Is that true?

I had a devilof a time integrating subs with Maggie 0.7, I use 2, the crossovers set at 60 hz, and placement took me @ 8 hrs of moving, listening etc. In the end I needed a preamp upgrade to the parasound hint 6, and REW, and digital room correction.

I had trouble with Placement but that was because the room was the wrong room for the speakers it came from a much bigger room had trouble with the equalization because of the size of the room and my old preamp did not have the ability to split off the subwoofers so there’s a lot of bleeding in the mid range from Magis to integrate at all

To integrate with a subwoofer you need a Best sub worker and you need a very very very very controlled crossover network otherwise it’s mirrors the entire bottom register

I am not an audiophile or audio engineer. I have listened to several of these obviously knowledegable sincere "professionals" comments and recommenditions. There is one noticeable consideration which has never been spoken about either by content creators or viewers like my self. Audiophile commenters span a large age group. Some are as young as their 20's and 30's whilst older ones' are in the 40 to 50 age group and 60 plus years. That is a big age disparity. In my humble opinion it is not physically possible to get accurate accessments of audio output be it live or through audio equipment by anyone over age fifty or consensus between a twenty year old and a forty plus year old. As we age all of our faculties change that is a simple fact unfortunately. Sadly our ability to hear sound diminishes in various frequency ranges. That is just a fact of life. Therefore I would advise customers seeking advise with respect to audio equipment, especially speakers and amplifers to pay closer attention to reviers within the same age bracket as themselves or the principal end user.

Are you placing the sub in the right spot then measuring with pink noise? If the sub is of very good calibre with very low distortion, the sub should disappear completely.

I am considering purchasing either the .7 or the 1.7i as my first panel speaker. My room is 12 by 15 ft and I have a choice of amplifiers to use. Either the Roksan Kandy K2 Integrated and Power are both rated at 200W per channel into 4Ohm. These can be used to Bi-Amp and give 4x 200W. The other choice is the Willsenton R800i which is rated at 50w/ channel but these are tube Watts which in my experience seem to be more powerful than Solid state W.atts. Can anyone give me some idea whether I have the room and gear to make this work and if so, which panel I should audition here in the UK.

Great Video! Adrian, what are your amplification recommendations that are not Hegel? Oh, I see you said Macintosh MC275 below. Any others to consider? And for the other guys, is the H190 enough, or do you really want to get the H390 for these? There is nothing worse than being disappointed by new speakers because the amp doesn't match. Thanks!

unfortunately they cannot be connected in bi wirning unlike 1.5 Qr and 1.6 Qr so it is not known how well they can actually play 1.5 1.6 and 1.7 are actually the same speakers only the year of production is different of course there are some other differences in the turnout and in the cosmetics, but I think they are the same

Toward the end of the video, Mr. Low mentioned that he likes to listen to these medium Maggies with tubes. Would you be specific as to the which amp you were using, please? I saw an ad from Magnepan not long ago where Wendell Diller and Dave Gordon were listening to the LRSs driven by a pair of Audio Research Reference 160M monoblocks. Talk about a price mismatch: US$650 for the speakers and US$30000 for the amps. Well, when the companies share a history together and are practically neighbors in southeast Minnesota, they can do what they want.

What about an open baffle sub as Magnepan is experimenting with? Are open baffle subs generally "faster" than ported or sealed cabinet subs? I understand that the bipolar nature of open baffles is a more natural match to the bipolar planar design, but does it help with "speed" at all? Obviously the "pure" solution is to add enormous panels of the same design to cover lows down below 40Hz.

Hey Guys, I watched the video with much interest. I have Focal 1028be, powered by Parasound A21. But I am still wanting more High Fidelity. I listen to stream files via Amazon Music (HD or UltraHD--16-24bit/44-192khz). I reached out to a few regarding the Magnepan 1.7i or B&W 702 S2. But I'm told the Focal's are real good. I'm not totally sold. I want high resolving, and 3D layering. Really trying to get that airy sound. Question: Do you guys think a god preamp with good DAC would make a difference? Right now using my Denon 3808ci to steer for Home Theater. Thanks! Great channel.

Moved, new house and the room i ended up with was 10x14, 7 foot ceilings. Very small, was concerned it would be an issue… not at all. Have a small sealed sub to fill in the bottom for home theater, zero complaints. Going to upgrade my integrated. 10 (plus?) years, not even thinking about swapping out the 1.6s. The soundstage feels like it’s the entire room.

Loved the video thank you guys! I just got the 1.7i but my Naim Superuniti (80WPC into 8ohms, 120WPC into 4ohms) goes really hot and stopped playing to cool down. Is H190 a good pair with 1.7i or I have to go with H390? Thanks!

I believe one of the gentlemen said the 1.7i has a woofer, a midrange driver and a tweeter. Pretty sure it's a mid/woofer driver, a tweeter and a supertweeter.

@@adrianlow2114 ty. I had a mojo and the internal dac to my rotel integrate. The rotel is normal chip sound, dynamic and spits details out with a large soundstage great for giving that surreal soundstage. But my mojo is more coherent. Prefer the integrated dac for electronic and mojo for "audiophile" have to toe the speakers in directly for mojo though and hardly any toe in for the integrated

The SMGas also benefited from vertical feet My 0.7 are on verticals stands that I made, the plexiglass stand Magnapan make is horrible, it’s ugly, and unstable.

Yes. I put my SMGa’s on air conditioner brackets screwed into wood. The MMG’s are on wood that I angled so that they are straight up. I won’t go back without anchors.

I have lived with the 1.7’s for two years had to sell them cause they didn’t play nice with all types of music. If you prefer classical and acoustic music. It’s a great chose but for up tempo rock music they really fall short. Your best to have a pair of conventional speakers along with the Maggie’s if your going to listen to let’s say classic rock.

i agree - even though i havent listened to the 1.7s ive auditioned the 20.7 with and without the subwoofer. with the sub imo just sounded more complete will without was still and excellent speaker but was missing a vital element imo.

I listen to lots of classic rock/pop/hip hop/anything on my 1.7's and love it all. Subs help, although I'm just using a tiny pair of REL T5's below 40Hz. Good amplification is key. I'm running some older ARC gear and it works great with the 1.7's. And, as always with Maggies, set up is crucial. It can take a lot of trying before you find the magic geometry for your room.

Yeah the Maggie’s are a very different and special speaker. Which require some TLC in room placement, upstream electronics and music choice. I own the LRS’s and really enjoy them for the magic they make. However if they were my main, everyday speaker, I wouldn’t own them. Like Brystonboy said, they excel at acoustic, vocals, jazz and that type of music. They also sound good with everything else I throw at them. It’s a different way of listening to some of my favorite music. Sound quality, soundstage, imaging, speed and transparency plus sound just coming from thin air is spectacular. Resolution, micro dynamics, details in music are the best I’ve ever heard. And all music sounds good on them. Well at least all well recorded music, poor music sounds poor. They’re very revealing. But as far as huge dynamics and moving air, energizing the room and really moving me the way a live concert goes, especially with certain genres of music. They do fall short to me. I did a lot of listening today with my LRS’s and then switched it up to my system am with my ZU Audio Omen Dirty Weekends and it was like a night and day difference. Used the same songs. And there were definitely songs that I enjoyed on the Maggie’s more, vocals, female vocals but for the most part, I enjoyed everything else on my ZU’s. Especially music with a lot of impact and deep drums bass drums, kick drums bass guitar. Stuff that was meant to hit you in the chest. Music that you feel not just hear. And I’m not talking about noise, or being loud or excessive. But just impact. But I could go wild with that system too. Primus, NIN, even some songs by Madonna, Prince and some jazz musicians sounded more like being at a concert with the ZU’s. Now I am planning on adding two RSL Speedwoofer’s to the Magnepan system and I am sure that will dramatically improve things. It’s simple, the LRS panels just can’t move the kind of air the 10inch drivers in the ZU’s can. There is 0 impact or startling dynamics with the Maggie’s like there is with the ZU’s.

And like Jay pointed out, he didnt get into all those details because it's basically the same as the lower models.....and hes right. All Vilip did was claim he had more to contribute and then in the end he didnt. Lol. It's cool though. I get it, you are gonna defend your boy....especially on social media. I dont blame you. Good reviews minus this one and its only diminished because of the almighty Vilip.

I couldn't disagree more with the Villip bashing. I think these three really all compliment each other very well. I appreciate what each of them bring to the discussion and I especially like the dynamic between Jay and Villip. someone mentioned brotherly and I can totally see that and I can also sense a real mutual respect between them mixed in with good hearted ribbing.

Did you make the upgrade? If so, how would you compare them... especially the treble? I find the .7s to be amazing but the treble is bit slow/veiled in my system.

@@marcopignone9386 I'm happily still using the .7's and do not find the treble "veiled" in the least, no matter the source be it analog or digital. I have a high-end SS integrated as well as a very smooth-sounding Conrad Johnson Integrated, If anything I sometimes like to use low value Mills resistors to tame the tweeters a bit.
