Magnepan 2.5r , repair mistake *important for anyone venturing in repairing them*

Are your LRS mounted directly to the wall!?!? I'm shocked that anyone would tear into such an expensive speaker without consulting the manufacturer, especially since Magnepan is such a great company, and tells you exactly what to use.

He is a good friend of mine, he had no clue what type of glue to use. It's why I asked him if I was allowed to share the misfortune mistake he made. It's definitely awareness, I've rebuild many magnepans by now. It's always imperative to get the glue from magnepan (avoid winter time orders they won't send it ) Rebuild kits are readily available for them, in this case the glue didn't have any flex to it. So it ripped the entire mylar driver apart. Very unfortunate and definitely not easy to fix at home as you need a jig.

if you hear the dreadful sound. can i take socks off and just re glue with the 3m ? or does it all amhave to be pulled out ?

@@delgriffith2880 Typically you can just reglue it. But you'll gave to GENTLY pull the wires away from the mylar a little bit to see if any of the glue that's still there is just holding on. When I've done them (two pairs) it usually is only a few inches at the end.

They are easy to work on especially the older ones. Just use the correct glue and you don't even have to redo the entire speaker. It's usually at the top and bottom bends of the wires where it delaminates . Super easy , the most annoying part is removing the socks

Any time! Mistakes do happen and choosing the wrong glue definitely is catastrophic.

"honest mistake" - hmm.... not sure what that really means. Magnepan is pretty clear about which 3M cement to use, they give the 3M name to buy. BTW, that old glue and the wires add so much weight to the Mylar, which is why the old Maggies sound so different than the new ones. The new Maggies have less weighted diaphragms which make for faster responses.

It was a honest mistake, keep in mind the man first time owning a pair of magnepans. It wasn't for him, and he tried his best repairing them. Was he uniformed ? Yes , that doesn't mean he did this on purpose at all. He used what he had and thought it would been fine to use. Clearly not the case. I am aware of why my lrs sounds more defined too. I agree the quasi "ribbon material alot lighter. It's also a lot less forgiving on the ears vs the traditional planars. With whatever you feed it, I assume you're aware too. I think it's a trade-off more definition, comes with risk of more listening fatique. I just did some things to my lrs which I will share. Including a pair of feet that won't break the bank at all.
