Ok I got through electrified and Peace Orchestra. First Electrified. I have a playlist called "odd ball" I created for things like this. There were a few recordings I really came to appreciate as a recording and not how I usually heard electronica previously, so I kept them in the playlist. It was a good suggestion with very cool sounds and glad I listened. (What I'm trying to understand next is how to decern where distortion, resonance and reverberation is coming from. And I can't verbalize the difference.) Peace Orchestra: Let me start by saying I am glad it was a suggestion. It was just kind of ok for music for my taste but the first song, The Man Part 1. sat me upright instantly. In a bad way. I would like to say it showed me things about my system that helped define it. But instead it has me asking more questions I can't answer. I have purposely never said here what speakers I have because I believe at a certain point its personal preference. That being said they are very capable speakers. I don't want my time here being a pissing contest on who has the best. For me it's about the love of this hobby and all the different sounds. According to the manufacture's specs my speakers will go down to 18htz. Each tower has two 12.5" subs with an overall sensitivity of 94.5. Their reputation is that they have some of the cleanest clearest defined bass. I'm using a direct non EQ'd streaming signal opened by the DAC in an AVR direct to my amp and that cuts out the external sub, leaving only the towers putting out signal. Both channels are each receiving 1000K Watts independent class D. Back to what happened in the first song. At numerous points during the song, I cringed at the piercing sound because it hurt my ears. Additionally, the distortion was horrendous. The midrange vibrated my fingertips laying on the couch cushions. This carried onto a good portion of the second song. (The volume was set at 45% and if I'm correct that equals a -35db setting.) Not at all a quiet listening session but not anywhere near crazy loud. The suggested song Marakesh on the other hand at the same time had the very low frequency rumble but a very clear mid and upper. Here is my confusion. I know I can push these speakers far beyond healthy levels and have with zero ear fatigue and retain clarity. I've done it. Yet while listening, every range of this song had so much unclear sound it was maddening. Yet simultaneously the Snare drum sounded like it was next to me as a perfect sound. I think we can all agree that it's the recording and that is simple. However, the low frequencies seemed to reverberate as though it was a room issue not coming from the speaker. If I were to suggest two comparable songs producing the same low frequency range, they would be the instrumental movie soundtrack song "2049" by Hanz Zimmer. It has a very deep wall shaking rumble, yet all other frequencies are clear. the second song (don't judge) is "Honey" by Robyn. that has a punch you in the face bass with not nearly as much rumble in the room. It's a typical club thumping type song Blah Blah Blah, if I walked into my room and listened to the man part 1 for the very first song, I would instantly say it was a speaker issue not a recording issue and I can't figure out why. I would love to hear anyone's reasoned opinion as to why it's so hard to determine its the recording and not the speakers. If your suggestion is that I'm just nuts, get in the line with my wife in it. thanks for reading my nonsense.

I just got super interested in the vintage stereo game after 40yrs on the sidelines and it's hit me fast and furious while staying within a budget. I just bought a pair of KG4s which I haven't connected yet. My plan is to run them with a 45wpc stunning Sherwood 7650CP I also just got. Ive also picked up a pair of 1973 OLA with the fried egg tweeters, and some JBL l50's, along with a gorgeous Technics SL-B2 I stumbled across (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5zaaWCLitV2jas) , and a 63wpc Kenwood KR 7400. Still wanting to pick up a Marantz 2265B (prob sell the Kenwood at that point), and 1 or 2 other pairs of speakers (Sansui AS-300 or Dynaco A-40XLs, or ADS 810's). Oh the "man cold" women have no idea. As far as power conditioners, I am torn. I have a relative that installed Xray Equipment for hospitals his entire career. He absolutely is of the belief that a power conditioner has a noticeable improvement in picture quality and sound. He is not in any way pushing a brand of any kind but has a mid-level ($700) conditioner on his video set up and claims an appreciable difference. He says he hears no audible difference either but admits his audio section of the system is not that revealing. I do not have the resources to by the 6k PS Audio p12 but at the same time I have a really nice pair of speakers and amp. I am not convinced that I am going to have a substantial improvement in sound that would justify money exceeding 1K. (this is a total guess, but I believe that would be a point of diminishing returns for me.) I would certainly benefit from the surge protection. My buying philosophy has always been to by the best that I can afford within my means. I just don't know what I don't know in this area. Monster no longer makes these units so I have been looking around for a while. So, until I can justify to myself an expenditure in this area, I will continue with my planning paralysis. To me buying cheap crap would be as equal a waste as buying Gucci products I don't know I will ever grow into.

@MichelLinschoten Ай бұрын
I disagree I didn't only use crowns. I had even an rs1b quad amped with class a/b. They don't need as much power at all the K9 it's just a resistor that caused the impedance issues it's a flawed design hands down. You can easily revise those crossovers in normal mode you can drive them with anything just about. The 8th is a way better speaker for many reasons , it specs pretty much the same as the kappa 9. I only had 3 sets of k9 , ren80, every rsII rs1b what have you not. We tried tons of amps it had nothing to do with power And for your information crown outdoes McIntosh on power numbers. 2.4k in mono for crown xls2502 without any sweating

@@MichelLinschoten I had a McIntosh MC 2500 . Run those 9s on that and they will sound incredible. I ran them on a crown macrotech 1200. No contest , the Mac amp ate the crown for breakfast. Put them on a 200 watt amp and they sound terrible. Kappas need a class a/b amp or you aren’t really hearing what they can do. Crowns have a lot of power, but it’s Dirty power.
@MichelLinschoten
@MichelLinschoten Ай бұрын
We had 200lbs (just the power supply ) of ati amps on them at one point class a/b . I had McIntosh in the past in combination with Sonus faber , and magnepans so definitely not new to it. The 9 is a speaker that has a lot of requirements. The crowns do not deliver "dirty power" this is actually well documented all over the internet and measured. So define "dirty" I agree I am not a huge class d fan. But driving the low end I the K9 with crowns has absolutely no affect in terms of dirty on the mid high (which we always have driven with class a/b) You also assume that amplification is the issue. It's not, I restored 3 sets of kappas 9's and just pulling the crossovers. Betray the many shortcuts taken with them. Inductors in close proximity, cheesy npe caps and poly switches (tweeter protection pull those you gain actual upper end quality) those wear out. The low end was a shortcut cheap passive way they went for. Which is fully understandable. As nudell wanted them to be servo controlled, but that would have put the kappa 8 and 9 in a way beyond reasonable price category (he mentioned that in a interview for a hiding magazine) ... The kappa 8 specs literally the same as the kappa 9 , the reason why the k8 has better chances with most people to work better. Space requirements, the K9 even in our biggest space 700sqf or so we walked into standing waves. The tweeters are to directional , so having them at sitting position nearly 5ft up in the baffle doesn't benefit them at all. We had no issues driving them at all with any amp we hung in it, we measured 8amp pulls on the low end at full war strength without any amp buckling. Especially not our ati power amps, those we used regularly to power the rs1b to that requires quad amping. And safe to say makes the kappas look like child's play on the amplifier end of things. So powering them was never an issue, Also you had a crown 1200 We used a crown xls2500 that is literally the most powerful crown in the xls series currently made. 440 watts x 2 at 8 ohms 775 watts x 2 at 4 ohms 1200 watts x 2 at 2 ohms 1550 watts x 1 at 8 ohms in bridged mode 2400 watts x 1 at 4 ohms in bridged mode. also I want to point out WATTAGE HAS ZERO TO DO WITH quality really, you don't need even close to these type of numbers to run any speaker really. Unless you're filling an venue with a pa rig. Kappas 8 and 9 recommended minimal paper isn't even 200w ... A good 200w class a/b that can deliver it with current overhead will run them. And at thd levels way below human hearing. Not to mention, the power demand never even got close to the numbers the crown can deliver. 2ohm stable, way less amps can handle kappas and have. Just sharing what we have done and how we experimented with them and nauseum . With a wide variety of equipment (as class a/b is my main go-to always has been)

In that perspective, to make my point even more valid about today social media audio "influencers" I watched a video yesterday, about the chi fi tube amp "willeston" It's hailed by the influencers as a amplifier of the year. Tons of fictive awards , and reviewed by many as the best bang for you tube desired money. Look up skunkie engineering, he put that amp on an oscilloscope and measured the thd and really went diving into the amplifier. Conclusion? The worst amplifier he ever measured, it was so bad even. That he's telling his customer I won't touch it to do anything to it. He showed at 6watts between the left and right channel nearly a double percentile of distortion between the channels. Very questionable build quality and according to him "should have gotten the award for worst amplifier of the year bar none." It just shows how easily people are blinded by the big guys out there. Imagine you wasting 1k on an amp like that . Totally believing you bought something decent. These type of channels I am mentioning here. Are people that don't just share their subjective input. These are people , that you bring your gear too, to be modified and/or brought back to life (technical understanding of what it is they get their hands on) And that's very relevant, once you get to those type of channels. That's gold! You're then armed with not just an opinion, you actually have a good understanding what your money is actually buying. I can learn from opinion aslong as there is some critical thinking behind that opinion. The worst part his channel has maybe 23k subs ? All the while the glorified sales men have 250k subs ! Crazy to me, but that's the world we live in. Most people buy with their eyes. And I AGREE with you , it's not relevant what someone else thinks of what you're doing. But I do take a slight stance against people like the cookie cutter "influencers" that snag their own subscription base. For a product that in the end isn't even that great! Do your research, read some basic engineering books and understand what it is you're buying. Do some foot work, not just that you learn so much on your own. Which to me most definitely benefits you on the long run. And I have a custom 96 Silverado as my daily driver so we are absolutely golden there my friend hahahaha

@@MichelLinschoten I do not have, nor want, my own KZbin channel. I unfortunately live in an audio desert in my geographical area and in my social circles. So, when I decided to go down this path of putting my system together, I sought information. Being nearly 60 years old, I have zero technical knowledge of electrical engineering. What I have acquired is a very healthy sized dose of cynicism and it has served me well. That brings me to the point of measuring equipment and determining if its good by measurements alone. It's a very similar topic like the one you did on vinyl purists. When you're on this side of KZbin consuming and not producing, the comment section very quickly turns into a cesspool filled with conflict. Somewhere between ChiFi or die and Audiofool is where I fall. I am going to throw a very well-known and liked brand under the bus here. JBL has a storied history of making great speakers that has an almost cult like following, especially while playing classic rock. I do not discredit anything about them. By all accounts JBL is a good company and worthy of its fame. I personally have just never gravitated to their sound. I thought that way about Infinity. If back then they had measurement reviews to the level of today, it would matter zero to me if JBL measured better, I would always pick the Infinity. There is no instrument that measures what sounds good in my head. (yeah, bitches that's right, I'm a "Golden Ear" boy) Conspiracy theories start somewhere so why not here with me. After getting into a few forums it quickly was apparent to me my biggest problem was the ChiFi or die crowd. Not only are there channels shilling under the cover of review, (some openly admitting it because they are not ashamed to make money) but I believe with every fiber of my common sense that there are paid shills hiding in the comment sections trying to sway the opinion in favor of a few specific measurements to promote cheap being equivalent to quality. Any descent from that view is met with absolute hostility. This is very much true with trolls coming to this site to criticize its content if the monolithic thought doesn't fall in line. Erins Audio Corner is the only channel that has explained in layman's terms what affect a measurement will have on sound. Seconded by GR Research. But neither could tell me if I'm going to like the sound. This hobby should not be a dick measuring contest. It should be fun for the appreciation of sound.

While I did not follow all the advice given here, I fully agree. For me, listening to music is far more than just hearing. It's a total immersion of sound that affects more than hearing. music can affect your sense of touch and I'm not just talking about bass hitting you in the chest. If you're just starting out equipment should not be your first priority. Before one piece is acquired you need to ask yourself realistic questions about what kind of listener you are and really decide what the goal is. Everyone wants something that sounds good. But what is said about you being the most important part of the equipment is spot on. Any way you can, you need to listen as often to as many systems you can. When you hear "the sound" you'll know it. The line of equipment I prefer is kind of the Rodney Dangerfield of HIFI. If I had listened to reviewers, I would have never considered what I now have and I'm glad I didn't. My instincts were right for me. Only because I heard it and was able to obtain it on the used market. Buying, selling and trading endlessly was never in the cards for me and I do not have the kind of funds to make that many mistakes and keep trying. Being honest with myself about what I wanted out of my system for how I listen, and knowing my financial limitations has allowed me to get my dream system without many mistakes. With a moderately nice Stereo, a really nice amp and really nice speakers, I have sound I never knew possible. This was possible only because I had a clear and realistic path to exactly what I wanted. before I buy anymore equipment, I need to set up a proper listening room. While I love my sound, throwing high end DAC's, streamers etc. would be the epitome of diminishing returns in my acoustical mess of a room. Above all else, do this for the love of listening not the acquisition of stuff.

Not only fuses make a hearable difference, but if you put it the wrong side, you hear it too. I removed my hifi tuning fuses, a full silver that didn't have enough bass and a cardas one that had too much and was a little sloppy. Wouldn't have removed them if it didn't do anything. They definitely make a difference. If you don't have the ears for it then that's that. With magnapans I would choose the silver cylinders from OCD hifi guy though or remove the binding post plate all together and solder everything directly with good silver solder. Good video otherwise.

@MichelLinschoten 2 ай бұрын
Ocd Mike is local to me, definitely someone I've been following I have tried many fuses and I even opened up a few of the so called high end fuses. They differed absolutely nothing with the original fuses. The internal breaker wire is the exact same thickness as the original fuse that came with them (trust me it's thinner than you think) . Which makes sense right , it's supposed to work as a fuse you can't make that magically thicker with similar fuse properties. If you really want to get quality there, just bypass that whole fuse nonsense. Magnepans, and that goes for the lrs cheapos up to the flagships I've had. They ALL have horrendous crossover networks. And IMHO can easily be rebuild to better quality standards. As far as fuses goes ? Definitely tried many , and definitely understood why it simply doesn't work from a technical perspective. And most definitely I yet have to get a significant difference in audibility. To say "omg that's insane" With the 10 plus pairs of Maggie's we had never happened. Perhaps you're correct, I might be deaf to that type of thing. You know the saying, ignorance is bliss

Ohh way more dynamic than the lrs I had. Woofers move alot more air, you do get more coloration in the midrange vs the lrs. The lrs gets dwarfed by a system like this and mind you ? The GFL (great fucking line) arrays are just half the speakers. They will be flanked by open baffle 4x12 inch woofer baffles. And fully operational soon with active crossovers. Vocals sound absolutely massive on these things, especially in the main setup (way more space for them. It's definitely not a planar sound,you will give up on some definition in the midrange it's very hard to beat Maggie's there. Sound staging is phenomenal, it very comparable with bigger magnepans, airy and open just again a tad more coloration in the midrange. Cones do color the soundfield a bit more. I still have a road ahead of me., but super proud of what I've done so far. Once they are done I will definitely break down the cost too. And it's very very low.....

Dumb question but can you replace the polydome faceplate with these?
@MichelLinschoten
@MichelLinschoten 3 ай бұрын
Good question never tried that , but technically you can. However you'll need to be very frugal with taking the coil wires off . As the dome is glued to the back of the faceplate (it's one whole)

I agree with everything you said about the kg4. I got two pair within a week for great prices and sold one pair. Then I wanted two pair again. Just got one today with the titanium tweeter and crossover upgrade for only $300. Now I really love having two pairs. Playing mostly records and Tidal streaming with Rogue Audio all tube Preamp and separate all tube power amp. Second amp is Jolita SJ302A integrated all tube amp.

Use to be a welder in a job shop. Those magnestands or feet have about 30 bucks in material around a man hour in cutting drilling welding and paint. At 125 bucks there would be a good profit. 300 is just greed. I had the direct opposite result with the TV stands. I have different stands. It's either straight up or tilted back too far. There's 3 adjustment holes. If you cut away the tab between the 2 holes closest to the speaker gives you the adjustment you need. Just getting the LRS+'s off the ground was an improvement. After the mod and tilting them back half the width of a hole it was not a subtle improvement. The soundstage expanded even more and the instrument placement within the sound stage also improved which lead to a bettering of the overall sound. The room you have very much resembles my listening area. It all comes down to personal taste and what the individual prefers. I prefer the tilt and it's close to the factory tilt. The factory did it for a reason and the aftermarket stands have the same tilt. Don't see the need to muck about with door stops

Are your LRS mounted directly to the wall!?!? I'm shocked that anyone would tear into such an expensive speaker without consulting the manufacturer, especially since Magnepan is such a great company, and tells you exactly what to use.

He is a good friend of mine, he had no clue what type of glue to use. It's why I asked him if I was allowed to share the misfortune mistake he made. It's definitely awareness, I've rebuild many magnepans by now. It's always imperative to get the glue from magnepan (avoid winter time orders they won't send it ) Rebuild kits are readily available for them, in this case the glue didn't have any flex to it. So it ripped the entire mylar driver apart. Very unfortunate and definitely not easy to fix at home as you need a jig.

@@delgriffith2880 Typically you can just reglue it. But you'll gave to GENTLY pull the wires away from the mylar a little bit to see if any of the glue that's still there is just holding on. When I've done them (two pairs) it usually is only a few inches at the end.

I’m hanging all the way through. I don’t wish to insult you but I’m not sure of your back ground in wood working is So Here is an unsolicited suggestion if your staining.pine it has a tendency to stain very blotchy. The extra $5 and two minutes to wipe on wood conditioner will greatly reduce the uneven staining. Tell me to shut up anytime

I am are actually going to paint it black 😁 I am most definitely not staining (which I actually have done to my kg4 and a pioneer hpm 100 which had really nice results) as I used an polyurethane afterwards (3 coats) to seal the stain. I have to friendly remind everyone' this is the first line array I've ever build. So suggestions are most definitely welcome. Also it's a shoe string budget "prototype" as I first want to see where I am at with it. And if this direction makes any sense for me to further pursue. If this works out well , I am definitely making another one with better drivers, ideas, and more detail to its finishing touches. .. And I wouldn't tell anyone to shut up , any suggestion (just to repeat) most definitely welcome

Ok guilty as charged (somewhat) sticking with the Ferrari analogy, it’s a little bit hard to not want one when your friend tosses you the keys.and you get to experience it. Back to the speakers. We like what we like. Infinity was always the brand that gave me the sound I preferred. At a time when JBL and Bose were king in sales and I never cared for the sound. Everyone told me I was nuts. My current brand of speakers are up there in the price market and that is why I. bought mine used. All I can suggest in this hobby is seek a sound that you want not what everyone tells you to like. In the audiophile world my speakers are the red headed step child and I done care because they are exactly the sound I like. Did I go too high end? I don’t think so considering I paid less that some of the stuff you can get at Best Buy.

We are all guilty of it really, it's a side effect of being an human being. The longing to own something , we can't afford or simply dream about being as superior. It's pretty clear , you found what you love. That's what you should stick with, you said in your comment (which is a perfect example) of why we do that too. "Everyone told me I was nuts" automatically we seem to take to heart what someone else thinks. You're clearly where I am at with it too . In the end I don't give a fiddler's fuck what someone else thinks. And I most definitely stopped longing (or having a glorified) in" view of what's out there. I think you , know and experienced that too as being a big relief. You save so much money ! And you get a way lesser burden on you mentally too . It's not easy to be that way. Takes some goddamn discipline, so definitely for whomever sees this video. Not trying to attack you , but I do try to urge... Guys...it's OKAY it's not always greener what you think is greener.

I also ordered the GR Research LRS+ upgrade kit, to remove all of those "Cheesy" parts in the business section. The cost on that was around $315 shipped.
