Magnesium is considered one of the essential minerals that is involved in more than 300 different body processes, including keeping your heart beating and maintaining electrical stability of your nervous system. Magnesium is used by the body to help regulate serotonin and other neurotransmitters. And some researchers believe that low Magnesium is the problem behind treatment resistant depression. In this video I explain how Magnesium works for depression and anxiety.

magnesium made me worse. I became lethargic and super depressed and felt too full all the time. I get a lot of magnesium from my diet, but I took it just in case I wasn't absorbing it. I wouldn't have expected it to make me feel worse so that sucks. I tend to have unusual responses to supplements. (like Vitamin D induces hypomania for me even when my levels were on the low end).

Seriously everyone listen to her! I used to get severe anxiety attacks literally for no reason. I told the doctors and told them it wasn’t mental and my body was literally just having a panic attack when I wasn’t even stressed out if that makes sense. I started taking magnesium glycinate everyday and they went away in a week! 4 years still going strong.

Veronica, so grateful you shared your experience with panic attacks. I needed to here that so much! I haven't tried adding magnesium yet but I'm likely deficient as my diet isn't terribly good. But my body has been acting as though I was having a panic attack even though I'm not mentally panicked. When I explained my elevated heart rate and sometimes spiking blood pressure to friends and even the doctor they said "that sounds like a panic attack" which I thought was a ridiculous notion. I rarely panic about much of anything. So you're commit here definitely made me reconsider that possibility. I guess I didn't realize exactly what a panic attack was. I'm definitely going try increasing my magnesium and also be a little more open minded about this panic attack stuff. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

This right here!! This was me after a car accident. I NEVER had panic attacks or severe cognitive anxiety prior to it. The day after, I was balling my eyes out and literally laughing at the same time because I’m like mentally I’m perfectly fine but my body, as you said, was having an attack. Such a weird experience! I’d be totally fine, then out of nowhere my heart would race, I’d feel dizzy, hot, trembly, stomach in knots with absolutely no stimulus. I could be watching TV and then bam, panic attack. After weeks of dealing with that, I started taking magnesium supplements and it’s helped so much! Never had a panic attack since then either and this was also 4 years ago lol

@charlesshaw7091
@charlesshaw7091 Жыл бұрын
@@Benjamin-xv9le I've been working in NHS mental health services for about 30 years and I don't agree with your cynicism. RCTs are useful but there are a lot of politics involved- usually they are funded by organisations that seek a profit and unfortunately advising people how to eat healthily doesn't make a large profit in the way that antidepressants do. Consequently RCTs are often not carried out in this area. That doesn't mean attention to nutrition is misplaced. Dr Marks' video gave a concise and crystal-clear account of the science. It makes good sense for people to get their magnesium levels tested and to experiment with , say , supplementing with pumpkin seeds for a little while, and see whether that alleviates depression. Antidepressants do help quite a lot of people but they aren't the only way and learning about one's own nutritional needs can be an important part of the recovery process, which mainstream mental health professionals need to learn more about.

@@mesarypaul5824 there are many good brands, to use for Magnesium glycinate and most of the time it says 3 or 4 capsules will equal 400 mg. I have several different brands from the health food store. There is also Magnesium L-threonite that you can use as well. Some people will start out taking a lower dose than suggested on the bottle and then increase it. I've been taking about 4 capsules equaling 400 mg of magnesium glycinate before bed. I have also found Magnesium Oil in a spray that can be used as deodorant and works amazing plus, you can spray it on your legs or stomach before bed. Another bonus of taking magnesium at night is it's affect on eliminating the bowels. I know, "yuck", but it's an essential part of good health. Not sure how much magnesium helped me but my panic and anxiety symptomps were very strongly reduced after taking ~800mg magnesium per day. Bisglycinate is also said to be excellent. I was taking a mix of oxide/lactate and bisglycinate. After about 1 month there was great progress, after 2 months symptoms were almost gone. This is after 6 months of suffering from anxiety and panic. The improvements lined up so well with magnesium that I'm convinced it helped. Maybe it's just placebo effect but sure as hell if placebo effect is actually useful in some health area it's psychology.

Definetly an eye opener because I’ve been diagnosed with depression at gr.4 and we grew up poor so we never had a lot of the basic fruits, veggies… when we did- it was when parents where in a good mood the whole week. We just survived off of my moms job when she would bring home with free left over fried chicken every night from work and when I was hungry my dad would tell me to wait till mom gets home ( she would get home sometimes midnight) btw we would eat fried chicken every single day sometimes for breakfast dinner and lunch. So knowing this I can see how my poor nutrition growing up contributed to my mental health. Side note; even tho unhealthy, im greatful bc it saved me from a lot of hungry days. It wasn’t until I got my own job at 18 that I started buying healthier food and fruits/veggies

It has allowed my current medications to be more effective. I no longer have Muscle Cramps or Joint pain. THANK YOU Dr. Marks. I'm lucky I eat a lot of legumes and enjoy it so I get easily 3 to 4 times the daily value for magnesium without thinking, which is one less thing to worry about phew. If you struggle with anxiety as Dr Marks has described, consider tweaking your diet to include at least one meal of legumes a day, it could be peas, beans, lentils, tofu even peanuts, peanuts are both a legume and a nut. They are also high in fibre which helps a lot with gut health. Unsweetened cocoa powder and molasses are also very high in magnesium. A cup of cocoa with 1tbsp of each could be up to 100mg of magnesium I think. I often use cocoa in my coffee instead of milk because I like the taste of cocoa and coffee combined. Stay healthy everyone.

No FREAKING way. I was actually researching about this literally a couple days ago and decided there's no harm at all in taking a vitamin if it was going to help my anxiety (which mostly comes in the form of a high pulse). I actually started taking it 2 days ago and I don't know if it can have an effect almost immediately but I've been noticing that I'm not as anxious. I'm so happy about seeing this video.

I used to take magnesium daily for migraines. But my migraines got way better and stayed that way even after stopping magnesium. Maybe I should go back to taking magnesium.

I just love her! The aproach she uses for mental health is so on point and helpful,things that we don't even think about in our daily lives because we do these repeatedly without understanding. Good food,good sleep,and more chemistry that helps the brain to fanction, included food supplements etc.

I started taking magnesium years ago and I take a mouth full of magnesium citrate every night. It helps with sweating, anxiety and depression. I’ve been struggling with severe anxiety and depression for years. Also constant sweating. Magnesium stops it all.

@@alperbilgil4405 I take a gulp of magnesium citrate before bed every night. It works better than any medication I’ve ever taken. Some magnesium absorbs better than others. Magnesium citrate absorbs the best. I feel your pain and I hope this helps you. I know the misery of gad. It’s the closest to hell on earth than anything else. Also breathing techniques help. Train yourself to take deep deep breathes. Good luck.
