Magnet fishing? This is a VERY important video to watch if you ever plan to go magnet fishing for treasure. I go over three important things you need to know about, and show you how to get the magnet unhooked from the bottom if it gets snagged.

I doubt you'll see this as it's an old video, but a tip for if you get snagged.,.,.. get a cheap speaker ring magnet and wrap it in duct tape as they break easy, or a thick washer made or steel or iron etc, and attach a rock climbing type cheap clip to it.... when you snag, clip the metal ring onto your rope hold the rope up so it slides down to the snag, just a little flick will get over any hurdles, and the magnet will spring out of the snag and stick to the metal ring. Works everytime.

Good video I have a thought about how you may improve on your magnet. If you find a plastic funnel and a tube of silicone( exterior calking of any type would work fine I'm sure. Cut the wide end of the funnel to the same size as the magnet and the small end the same as the screw shaft on the mag. Because of the eye you would also need to cut down the length of the funnel.(if the eye on your magnet were smaller then it may be slipped over the eye by only cutting a small silt at the small end and feeding the rope through) Now slip the funnel in place and sue tape to reseal the cut. Next tape it to the magnet temporarily while filling the funnel with the silicone. Let it cure for as long as necessary to allow the silicone to set totally, I would think 3-4 weeks in a warm dry location (you don't want it in your living space as it probably isn't good to breath the fumes that will come off) I don't do magnet fishing as there is little to no chance of finding much where I live. I do think this would work well and prevent a lot of hang ups GL&HH I really hope this helps someone.

Seeing this video makes me thing it might also help to put a 16 ounce soda bottle on the line to cover the knot and eyebolt. That might just reduce the chances of getting stuck.

Hi Beau. Mostly good advice. The only thing different I would suggest is, attach the rope to something on the river bank, not yourself. Theres always something to attach to, wether its a tree, railing, old person or small child, just look around and see. So far I've mostly found rubbish, but I've started doing research so hopefully next year, I will find something a little bit more interesting. I opted for climbing rope with a breaking strain of 3500kg doubled up, how you tie your knot, and checking the condition of the rope is important. If all is well, I will break before my rope does. Stay safe, healthy, happy, contented and making youtube videos my friend. Happy new year.

Easiest way to get magnet or fishing lure back. Have extra rope on hand for this tie a 2 liter bottle 3/4 full of water close as you can to magnet stuck in the water on the magnet fishing rope have and then tie another line if need for enough to throw the bottle of water in another direction thus pulling the magnet in a direction that you could not otherwise access without some sort of watercraft or getting wet. This hasnt failed yet for getting my magnets unstuck. Great video by the way and great tips.

HI Beau , Nice informative video once again. While looking at your magnet and hook assembly i had an idea that could help minimise its tendency to snag itself. I guess by putting the hook straight trough one of those orange plastic ball , like the one that kids play hockey with, it would divert most object from the flat spot of the magnet. Just a random idea but i ghuess it might work good with your magnet assembly. :) YMMV .

Cool video. I always keep my fishing magnet in styro in its box, then with the rope on it. That way there is always a couple of inches of foam and cardboard around the magnet so when metal gets too close to the magnet, it doesn't cause injury.

Thanks for the good video! I seem to have eliminated snagging,... by making a metal funnel which is upside-down on the magnet, held on the rope with a dab of silicon. You then are pulling up on a permanent 'taper" Happy hunting guys!!

I have learned a great trick from bass fishing fishing that may apply to magnet fishing. When snagged i get the line taught and pull and pop it immediately followed by slack. The pop travels down the line and the frees the lures and the slack allows it to fall. Takes a while to master but 60% of the time it works 100% of the time.

Good tips. I just got into magnet fishing and I'm applying my #1 normal fishing rule to it. Always bring my sit on top kayak. Great tips Beau. One more thing, if you get a snag and you're pulling hard on the rope, be careful that it doesn't suddenly come free and shoot back in your face. This sometimes happens with fishing lines and is more common than you would think. Peace out.
@SpiritBear12
@SpiritBear12 8 жыл бұрын
+Glen Pierce It happens with fishing lines because the fishing pole is bent like a bow and storing energy, as is the fishing line. When your hook suddenly comes free, that bent fishing pole and line will of course spring straight back and that's what helps shoot that hook filled lure out of the water right at you. It's happened to me on more than one occasion. But when yanking on a rope you're not storing that same kind of energy. Also a magnet like that is fairly heavy too, so it's not going to come flying out of the water as easily as a light weight fishing lure tied to really thin stretchy line will.
@SpiritBear12
@SpiritBear12 8 жыл бұрын
David Hicks OK, new magnet rules. Don't tie them to stretchy ropes. Don't pull them with ATVs Wear a goalie mask in case one flies out of the water.

A few wee tips...spray or paint your magnet...non magnetic side with high viz paint so you can see it better in murky water...mark your rope every meter so you know what depths/distances you are working with...always take your "magnetic stones/rocks" home and check them for meteorites/meteorwrongs...I have one...there are a few test you can carry out if you google it...and you could try fixing a plastic bottle to the non magnetic side of your magnet so it has buoyancy so it always lands magnetic side down in the riverbed etc, Thanks for sharing,
