Thank you. Great content and was very helpful at a time when I needed it

For even less resistance, place a magnet on top of cork and float it in water. Any magnet will do, provided it stays on top.

Yes, I have used the ping test but worn silver coins seem to have a different tone than the newer less worn coins. Inquests I don't have a good enough of an ear to discriminate the tones.

Get a neodymium magnet with a flat side & let the magnet slide down the coin which you hold at a 45 degree angle & if the the magnet slides down the coin slowly then it's probably real silver. If it sticks or slides down fast then it is definitely not silver.

Yeah, less than 20% difference in the speed of a slide yes, maybe 10%? Hard to tell

@@VndNvwYvvSvv from nickel to silver? the speed is immensly different, easily visible to the untrained eye. however i do agree with the comment above my copper sandwich coin seems to hold onto the magnet like my certified silver does

I work at an antique shop in Florida. A young man cam in with 21 silver dollars in a baggie, coins were all in individual holders with the date and mint printed on each sleeve, he said they were his grandfather's, and he had passed. All dated I late 1800s, the dealer bought them then took home and noticed that there was a similar flaw on each coin. He tested ( which should gave been his first move). All were counterfeit, is there a quick test we can do at the counter to detect this? The police confiscated the coins and took a picture of the kid .

Look for the coin pinger I believe its called. And there is also an android app called bullion test you can use with the pinger. The pinger it is actually a plastic holder with a small hammer that strikes the coin so it rings. The app listen to the ring frecuencies, and it tells you if those frecuencies match your coin size and metal composition.

I wonder what the alloy is that was used on the fakes. Take the bucky ball magnet and drop it down a copper tube. Or watch a video on it.

have you done a ping test on every coin? like tapping one coin to another by holding one coin on your one finger and tapping it with another coin. real silver has a deep tone and long ring on it. nickel has a high pitched long tone.

Question? So, just to be clear, if a coin sticks to a magnet or vice versa, it's fake???

or course

Not fake.... just not silver

@@jakemurk3467 well its 90 percent silver. why isn't the magnet attracted to the 10 percent of the other metal?
@jakemurk34675 жыл бұрын
It is possible that 10 percent is a non magnetic core metal. If you are using a strong neodymium earth magnet it should slightly detect a 10 percent magnetic core. I would use more than one method of testing.

What about the American Silver Eagle? That coin is almost pure silver..
@spektator7225 жыл бұрын
TheBald1 I haven’t had any issues with the Silver Eagles that I have purchased, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t fakes out there. I use the same inspection process. Weight, dimensions, ferrous material rest and ping test. Hope I haven’t missed on any purchases.

What about 25.92
@spektator7225 жыл бұрын
If a silver dollar weighs 25.92 grams and is very worn, it may still be legit. I would to the ping and magnet test to improve the judgement.
