One addition that you might want to think about. Take a screen protector and add it over the magnet slide. This will protect the coin or bar from abrasion during the slide. You can get them at a dollar store.

Make two slides side-by-side on that one board, and make a longer string of them all the way up the board. Start the real coin and the fake coin side-by-side and release them at the same time. To be sure that the test isn't effected by the two slides being a bit one from another, run the test multiple times and switch the coins from one slide to the other.

Another good home test to go along with this is the ice test. Since silver is a good conductor of heat, a real silver coin should quickly melt an ice cube until it is cold enough to try and refreeze the cube. With a coin that is fake, the ice will either slightly melt or not melt at all. Sweet video, by the way! You may want to try and get a patent on that

Cool, simple, and effective coin testing slide, extremely well done! BTW @8:35 I think the term you're looking for is diamagnetic, not pseudo - magnetic :) The motion of the silver, gold, or copper, creates a repulsive force (not conductive) thus slowing the coin down as it crosses the alternating positive and negative magnetic poles on the slide. @10:05 the metal content of the fake coin is Ferromagnetic and is most likely made of steel with either a plating of silver or nickel or it's highly polished to simulate silver. Nickle is also Ferromagnetic, so if you tried to slide a US 5 cent piece, aka a nickel, it would also stick to the magnets. I would really like to see what a tungsten core fake gold coin does on the slide. Tungsten is paramagnetic so it has a weak magnetic attraction. Counterfeiters use tungsten as it's nearly the same weight as gold. Now I have a question, what is the weight of the fake Carson City Morgan Dollar @13:00 ? Because in this case, using an $18 silver planchet to strike a $150 to $250 plus CC coin would make sense. Or using a Philadelphia minted coin and adding the CC mint mark. Does it ping test correctly? Such as using a ping in combination with the pingcoin app? At that point diagnostics would be needed. EDIT: I see you added diamagnetic to the text at the end... good job!
@Silverpicker

Thanks so much for all the info! There are definitely fake coins minted in real silver, so this test is really just the first line of defense in many tests you must do on a coin

The race should consist of both coins touching the magnet and eachother at the same time instead of dropping it on the magnets. That way if one was slower there would be no denying the distance of the drop.

The opposite poles of the magnets must be inducing a current in the silver coin acting like a generator causing drag and the potential energy from the falling coin gets converted into current in the coin causing it to heat slightly. The more conductive the material the slower the coin goes. You could use a cool with ac current and a meter to measure current at fixed ac frequency and voltage. This would be more reliable because you would have a digital readout that would be exact and not have to guess 1/10 sec difference.

In the wild I use the ping test. It’s very effective for anything over 50% silver content from my experience. The ping is a lot duller on the 40% halves though. Obviously some metals ping like silver and they’re really hard to tell with the untrained ear but it’s still my preferred method. And the ping of real silver is so satisfying!
@Silverpicker

That's true. I like the ping test if you need to do it in a pinch, but I prefer the more exact methods if I can do them

There's an app for that: Precious Coin Tester, and it works. But the best is probably to combine all known DIY tests: Ping, weight, gravity, magnet. Because you may be able to fake one but you probably can't fake them all.

Go to ''Basics of Testing For Silver and Gold...'' by Silver Bullion TV, to learn about metal properties and the testing methods for each property. Very informative. I use the UTM and caliper verification test as my go to #1 test method. Then the Specific Gravity test for fun. An UTM is absolutely necessary for big bars authentication process. I do not have confidence in the sigma basic or pro verifier as I don't know the science behind it's claimed test functions. Do they only do surface ECM analysis or through-the-metal test, as they claimed? The optional bridge on the Pro is nothing more than 2 sets of rulers and a digital drop gauge. FYI. The density/specific gravity test is not conclusive either, whereas the ultrasonic celerity test IS, in my opinion.
