Hi David - great review - thank you! I’m looking upgrade my blu ray player from the Panasonic ub820 to either the 9000 or the Magnetar 800. I use a Sony VPLXW5000ES laser projector and watch blu ray discs almost exclusively- no sacd or other audio formats. I’m only looking for the best movie experience I can get. Which player would you recommend? Thanks again!

I have a Panny UB9000 and my trusty old Oppo-203. The 9000 has a slight edge in HDR10 video quality but Dolby Vision is a toss up. Having said that, the Oppo, as an all around player, beats the pants off the Panny. When it comes to playimg various video/audio encodes in video files off an external hard drive or over a network, there's no comparison. The Panny is significantly limited here whereas the Oppo can play almost anything that you can throw at it. So the Panny is still my primary commercially released disc spinner but the Oppo handles everything else. Frankly the Magnetar looks like an Oppo clone (there are reports that some Oppo engineeers are now with Magnetar). If my Oppo were to go toes up, and I couldn't find another one at a reasonable price, I wouldn't hesitate to get the Magnetar 800. The only thing that I would miss would be the Oppo's USB input which can come in very handy at times.

The Magnetar has USB input and while the picture is not as great as the Panasonic 9000, it is still better than Sony and as good as the Oppo

@MrNorcal81 I don’t know how they got around that legally. AFAIK if you have a player, you can’t get to legal license to have another HDMI input as it is a different classification altogether.

@@DavidSusiloUnscripted You do have to wonder. I have a Roku Stick plugged into mine. I use it for watching older programming shot in the now ancient traditional 1.37:1 aspect ratio because the Oppo has such a good screen zoom function, especially at the 1.2X setting.

Hi David - in the first comment above where you say “the picture is not as great as the Panasonic,” are you saying that the Panasonic has a greater picture overall, or a greater picture when comparing input of the Panasonic un9000 and the Magnetar 899 through the usb port?

Just David is suffice :) Do you play SACD and DVD Audio at all? Is your TV Sony? If you answer yes for either questions, the answer is yes. Don’t forget the UB9000 can not play DvDA and SACD and also can not play 4K mkv

It doesn’t play VideoCD format. You want the best quality video playback, get the UB9000

Yes. 100% on this. The internal gut of Reavon is 100% identical to Sony X800m2. So you’re buying a Sony X800m2 at quadruple the price.

Oppo players haven’t been “the best” for the past 4-5 years. The best picture quality is still Panasonic UB9000. But for the best universal player, this is about the same as Oppo 203.

Panasonic from the manufacture only have a region B hack. Not all region and it doesn’t work with all region B movies. The same goes with LG. Reavon, if you open the case, is a 100% copy of Sony 800m2 yes it can do multi region with special firmware too.

At almost twice the price of my Oppo this player would have to excell my expectations. My fear is that firmware updates will only be available for a limited time and then i will be in the same position as i am with Oppo.

Well Oppo have been dead for half a decade so it is to be expected but even Sony with their X800m2 haven’t had any new firmware for the past 2 years. Especially because literally there is no reason to have a new one.

@@DavidSusiloUnscripted Firmware updates were to solve any issues within the player and to enable glitch free playback of the new titles that caused issues. Once all the players issues have been solved that is fine, but if any new discs cause issues then you have a problem. The fact that apart from the Panasonic 9000 none of the established brands have released any new high end players for a few years. 4K Blu-Ray is a niche format and i think the lack of any new players other than this brand shows how much demand has dropped.

But the demand is there. Hence the reason Reavon, Pennde, GIEC and Magnetar all release new players. Reavon is scam, though. The internals of Reavon 100 is pretty much identical to Sony X800m2.

@@DavidSusiloUnscripted I live in the Uk and you have to import these players yourself which costs a fortune in shipping, insurance and import fees and tax, making them way too expensive. Reavon were on sale for a while, but they were not well received now that i know the were based on the Sony explains it all. I still think the Blu-Rays and 4K are a niche market, DVD's continue to sell in greater numbers.

Should be fine. I tested this and the UDP900 (see my Magnetar UDP900 review) and played them for 6 hours straight. They don’t become hot at all.

Why compare it to the Panasonic Flagship? Just review the product, and do not compare, there were so many things you did not show, me flabbergasted it's less than 10mins long, I don't know what I learned but not much, very disappointed.

Why? Because it’s priced about the same ad Panasonic UB9000. All my videos are answers to my AV clients’ frequently asked questions. None of them wants a long winded video. If you disagree and don’t find my video to be useful then that’s unfortunate but as mentioned earlier, I’m catering towards my clients first.

Then don’t buy it. People still buy used Oppo 205 for $2K-$3K and it is objectively and measurably worse than the 900. The world of home theatre doesn’t revolve around things that is affordable to everyone.
