In my previous video ( • Magnetic levitation - ... ) the operation of a scaled up newer device is presented. In this video the physical design is discussed: magnets, control coils and sensors. In my next video the design of the PD controller will be discussed.

@@nikos44317 Thanks Nikos. I'm dan_col (at) hotmail (dot) com May I suggest that you set up a project page on Instructables.com or Hackaday.io? You can create a project description, upload Bill Of Material/files, and folks can discover and discuss your project. In the youtube video description, you would insert a link to your project page. Keep up the awesome work

It looks like a piece of art! Do you think it is possible to create a levitation platform that can lift the perm magnet from lying on the platform into the air(without moving the coils)?
@nikos44317
@nikos44317 Жыл бұрын
Hello Anton I think that it might be possible to lift the flying magnet without moving the coils but moving only the base magnets (12 in this specific device). If the magnets are not confined inside the control blocks but can move like the pistons of an engine from a low position that that does not provide any substantial lift to their normal lifting position, then yes it may be possible. The initial and final positions of the magnets do not have stability issues, but I am not sure about all the intermediate positions of their travel. Perhaps some (many?) simulation is in order, just to make sure. Then the main issue will be the smooth synchronized lifting of the magnets. Obviously ferromagnetic accessories (motors, gear e.tc.) must be avoided at close range. Very interesting idea. If you give it a try, I wish you success! Nikos

@@nikos44317 I thought that since you have so many coils in your other video, you may be able to have the necessary degree of control.Though I have no idea, this is way above my pay grade, . I found your video while researching for my project, I simply need to repel a 40x5 neodymium round magnet from zero position into the air, I don't need it to levitate or to have a stable state, just an electromagnet that repels a permanent magnet from position zero to... the farther the better. My problem is that a metal core electromagnets are only good at attracting as far as I can tell so they don't work for me. Air-core can provide a repulsive force but it's weak as hell, so I'm a bit stuck now, just having a good time watching other people doing stuff with magnets. Anyway, your stuff is head and shoulders above 99% of maglev videos in terms of engineering. You just need to add production value (lights, background, voice, etc.) and you'll get famous. Your engineering talent is way too good. Cheers!

Hello Anton You are very kind. It is possible to have soft iron or ferrite core coils repulse magnets, but they are more difficult to design (saturation, non linearities e.tc.). Air cored coils give smaller forces (as you correctly said) but they are very simple. All my control and drive coils are air cored for this reason. If you can tolerate some slow response time, you may achieve important forces, just by winding many more turns. If the operation is not continuous, you may use thin wire and higher voltage. In this case you must leave some time between consecutive activations so that your coil has the time to cool down. Have a very nice day! Nikos

@@nikos44317 I need to activate the electromagnet every 0.7 second. Do you think that an air core coil can provide a sufficient response time and a have enough time to cool down?

Concerning the physical construction, I can send you the dxf files used to cut the acrylic sheet by the laser cutter, as well as the stl files used by the 3D printer to make the sensor support and the coil supporting tool. The magnets have a diameter of 35mm, a height of 20mm and their material is N45. They can be found in Supermagnete. The coils have 300 turns of 0.75mm magnet wire. The electroniics are presented in detail in my next video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIOonn-ln7GLqpY . Feel free to ask questions on specific details. If something is very difficult to explain in words, I may make a short supplementary video. Nikos

I have also asked myself this question many times and I came with several answers: To those who build one such device, it provides the childish joy of succeeding in achieving a challenge. For children, it is a reminder that preconceptions must not be accepted without questions and it also may trigger curiosity, one of the most powerful drivers of discovery. As a possible application, I would say that it provides a way of supporting a sample without any mechanical connection with the environment, but the useful operating temperature of magnets would be a major disadvantage. OK. I will try to describe the steps for the construction (replication) of the device. 1. Acquire 12 NdFeB cylindrical magnets N45, with a diameter of 35mm and height of 20mm and 2 NdFeB disk magnets N45, with a diameter of 60mm, and a height of 5 mm. The poles must be on opposite flat faces. 2. Have a laser cutter cut the acrylic parts (16 magnet support pieces, 8 flanges and one base) as shown in kzbin.info/www/bejne/npW3gKGnqJurmrs from 1:21 to 1:48. 3. Assemble the 4 base parts as shown at 1:03. For each part use 2 flanges, 4 magnet supports and 3 cylindrical magnets. 4. Wind 300 turns of 0.75mm magnet wire on each block. 5. Assemble the 4 blocks on the base using the 12 inox, non magnetic screws as shown in 0:43. 6. Have a 3D printer make the sensor support (0:38). 7. Glue and solder 4 Hall Effect sensors A1324 to build the sensor block as shown at 0:34. 8. Assemble the base (0:08). 9. Prepare the hovering top using the 2 disk magnets. Between the magnets insert a 10mm thick plastic separator. Wrap the whole top in a 2 mm thick elastic sheet to protect it from inevitable crash landings! 10. The electronics are described in kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIOonn-ln7GLqpY . I did not go beyond the prototype construction, so I do not have a PCB design. The block diagram is shown at 0:50, the prototype is shown at 2:38 and the blocks with component values are explained at 1:18, 1:43, 1:50 and 2:02. 11. Be very patient and make small progressive adjustments! 12. Good luck and have fun! If you have specific questions, feel free to ask. Since this is an upgrade of a smaller device, it might be useful to also watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3vcnZKbfad3fpI . Nikos

You are very kind. If you do not have experience with Nd magnets, I may add a small advice: be very careful. Forces are very large and grow surprisingly fast when the distance between magnets is reduced. Fingers are in danger! I always have only one magnet out of the protective box until final encapsulation and I keep away all ferromagnetic tools. Have a look at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nX7Th3ylYpqkY6s at 1:53 for a safe way to install strong magnets in close proximity to get some inspiration. I wish you success Nikos
