From personal experience I think you get 5 gift's every 8 hours after the previous time you got gift's. You also need less than 5 to trigger getting gifts.

10:10 I believe it's every 7.5 hours (I often tend to give away all of my gifts and have timed it out) So if you give away all of your gifts, you will get 5 free ones. Then if you are out of gifts 7.5 hours later, you get another 5 free gifts. If you have less than 5 gifts, you will get the amount to get you back up to 5.
