Nice tailwind take-off! Can someone tell me why these spunky little numbers have any material advantage over a conventional 2 seat aircraft with a bit of STOL about it. I can see the looks are appealing; the convenience of the small wing-space in a hangar; trailerability; great views. But my observations when I was flying GA up to about 2005 was that so many people were dying in them. I think it was called "unloading the rotor" that caused most of them. I would love to give one a try, but I am a bit scared to get into one, I think.

What is the shoulder, leg, and head room like in the M24?

The takeoff looked a bit shaky to me.

Why in the world do these gyro jockeys use active runways for take-off? Half the idea of these jiggling jalopies is that you're supposed to be able to take off with a very short roll-out, yet they insist on sitting there on the runway, seemingly forever, having to spool up that top rotor, then proceeding to use nearly as much runway as most conventional SEL aircraft. All kinds of pancaking accident risk there. These things should be relegated to operating from their own dedicated area on an airport and they should be operated as, supposedly, they were designed - i.e. VSTAL. If they are going to insist on operating on an active conventional runway then they should not be allowed to engine assist spool up at a standstill and should use forward thrust to spool the top rotor until it generates life. If the unit isn't designed to do that then they should find somewhere else to operate.

Swansea and Wyong airports are used mainly for light aircraft. Belmont used to have a transport company, Aeropelican, operating out of it but that was quite a while ago. While the Gyroplane is capable of shorter takeoffs, it is easier on the aircraft, partcularly the pre-rotator clutch, to wind the rotor to a lower speed and achieve optimal revs via a longer run along the runway. As these airports are for recreational aircraft the gyro pilot has every right to operate out of them!
