But yeah we mentally vastly underestimate the number of insects there were on planet Earth, that led to the current insects we have. We're talking about: - millions of billions of insects - hundreds of millions of years - average lifespan of an insect of only a few months, so that gigantic biomass gets renewed multiple times a year Even if the mutation rate is super low, like off-banner gacha rate, it's still largely enough to try a fuckton of possibilities

Magni did not study good. For starters, birds and mammals are both "vertebraes". They are not so separated branches of evolutional tree. Not like that. Second, these tables of cross-featured letters are for genotypes. I.e. just mathematical pairs (combinations) for two separate genes. They may, or they may not be observable in the organism as any visual change or behavioural traits. These are phenotypes. They are not directly linked. Genotype though is a unambiguous entity, that can be determined and finite. Phenotypes though are only relevant in the scope of particular situation. Eye color is a phenotype. But so is blood type. Both are caused by combinations of certain genes. One gene carries certain phenotype, not combination of two genes. But the main thing is - same genes can be responsible for other phenotypes, simultaniously. And influence one another, creating recombinations that are much more complex boolean map, not just 2 by 2 squares. In general, one thing that Magni don't see - mutations. They happen any time a copy for the gene is created. That's it. You get same distribution of random outcomes onto entire gene length. Over many iterations these changes add up, and then can cause more distinct changes. These changes are then "filtered out" via natural selection. Giraffes did not stretch its neck. There were two girrafes. They got eventually a random mutations that alter their neck lenght. And only the ones with longer neck survived and reproduced further. So that particular change in genes that caused longer neck - got preserved into next iteration of random changes. All other possible gene mutations - were either unsuccessful to survive, or not happening at all. Statistically, there is a lot of possible combinations in DNA so some combinations may have never happened if there was not enough organisms to "check" all combinations for survivability. So it is about randomized changes in genes, being filtered out via "survival of the fittest" at our planet. That en-principle is true for all lifeforms on planet. Any differences that there are - are just higher level of details (like there are variable number of digits after comma depending on number's precision).

It's funny because he literally walked into the explanation at the end. The more and more it looked like a stick the less likely they were to succumb to predation. The same line of bugs likely had many mutations in the wrong direction that made it more likely to be consumed. It's hilarious how he kind of understands but his mind is just so blown he goes past it.

@@noctairedorvoxin0 Lol, I do see where he's coming from. It can be very hard to fathom how something so specific managed to emerge solely through random mutations. It's like the flatfish which somehow bizarrely evolved having both eyes on one side of its head, and you can't help just ponder how you had every generation where the eye has ever so slightly moved and was the feature evolution selected as being advantageous. So even if you can rationalize something, doesn't always make it easier to stomach

What happened to Fish don’t become birds?”

I've mentioned most of this in another comment, but the stars lore goes DEEP with the boys, it's not just names. Here's a list of connections I could find, if anyone's interested: ALTARE: Named after the star Altair, a light-blue star whose name means "The Eagle". Altare is a blue boi and has an abstract eagle symbol on his chest (he did confirm it's supposed to be an eagle himself when he dropped the star naming lore) VESPER: Vega, or "The Fallen Eagle". Since Altair and Vega hold joint mythology in Chinese and Japanese astrology (you might have heard them brought up if you've ever seen anything Tanabata-related), Vega is sometimes just called "The Fallen". Taken into a different context, that shortened title might be why gramps looks like an undead vampire despite being 100% boomer human. DEZMOND: Deneb doesn't actually mean "The Swan", that's just the constellation it belongs to. "Deneb" means "The Tail" (of the swan in question). However, curious thing about that; since animals are a frequent subject in constellations, and animals often have tails, there are 6 OTHER stars in the sky with the name "Deneb" - the one from the Cygnus constellation is just the most important one. You'll notice that we have one Dezmond, and Dezmond has 6 extra arms, protruding from his back like tails. These three (Altair, Vega and Deneb) form the Summer Triangle: an asterism that's used to tell the arrival and departure of summertime from its point of visibility in the night sky. Notice, btw, that Tempus HQ debuted in summer. There's two other triangle asterisms though; the Winter Triangle and the Spring Triangle. Let's move on the winter one now. (AXEL) SYRIOS: Sirius, brightest star visible from Earth, also known since ancient times as the "Dog Star" due to being the most prominently visible feature of the Canis Major constellation, "The Hound" (and also serving as its head in the asterism). Besides Axel having dog energy, you'll notice his armor has a lot of dog themes; the ears, the muzzle, the tail, etc. BETTEL: Betelgeuse. Oh boy, this one's a doozy. Betelgeuse's name is actually a mistranslation. Its original Arabic name was "Yad Al-Jauza", and some dunce accidentally replaced the Y with a B. Yad Al-Jauza means "The hand of Al-Jauza." Who is Al-Jauza? A goddess/myth figure from ancient Arabic folklore that later became the giant hunter Orion of Greek myth. But guess what? NONE of that matters, because the ACTUAL reference to Betelgeuse's etymology comes from Beetlejuice, the character from the movie of the same name who is ALSO named after the star Betelgeuse, is ALSO a vaguely-clown-themed barely-sane funnyman, and while Beetlejuice is a phantom, Bettel HAS Phantom. Absolute Bettel moment. FLAYON: Procyon, whose name roughly means "One who precedes the dog". It's called this because of its position relative to Sirius, the Dog Star. 'Precedes' here refers to how it becomes visible at night before Sirius does - due to its position relative to Earth, it's the first star of the winter triangle to become visible when night falls. As seen from Earth, it's an early riser, a hyperactive star that zooms out of the horizon at first notice, leading the way from west to east. If that doesn't describe Flayon's personality and role in the Tempus lore, I dunno what to tell you. That's the Winter Triangle. Again, notice Tempus VG debuted in wintertime. Now, there's one triangle left, but unfortunately its members don't quite match up as perfectly as we'd like to who's left of the crew. The Spring Triangle is a variable asterism - two of its three stars are set, but one of them is a 'pick one star or the other' situation, with both choices leaving you with a triangle. Neither of the choices, however, makes space for our archer coffee dad. SPRING TRIANGLE STAR #1: Arcturus. This one actually matches up to a certain forgotten member of Tempus, one who has, in fact, been implied to be sentient and independent. Flayon's mech, the R-Trus. It makes sense too, because the name "Arctururs" means "Guardian of the bear", and you might have noticed Flayon has a number of beast-like qualities in his design: the claws in his boots, his tail, etc. His tail in particular is reminiscent of the way the constellation Ursa Minor depicts a small bear - that is, having an unrealistically long, almost dog-like tail for a bear, complete with a very poignant star at the very tip (in the Ursa Minor constellation, that would be Polaris, the North Star - one of the most important stars out there). SPRING TRIANGLE STAR #2: Spica. You COULD argue that it sounds like Hakka (Spica is pronounced spee-kka), and honestly given how they turned Deneb into Dezmond that would make for more solid ground than some of the other names on this list, but the thing is... Spica means "Ear of Corn". I don't think the connection there is that ravens like corn, that's a super stretch. SPRING TRIANGLE STAR #3A: Denebola, "The Lion's Tail". Not only does that not sound like Shinri in the slightest nor does it correlate to him thematically at all, the Deneb-type stars are already part of Magni's schtick. SPRING TRIANGLE STAR #3B: Regulus, "The Prince". Again, no coffee dad correlation. If anything, it sounds like something Kobo would call Altare if she had a little bit too much adult juice before a stream. So Spring Triangle's a bit of a bust, but remember, the members corresponding the Summer Triangle debuted in summer and the ones that correspond to the Winter triangle debuted in Winter, with one exception in each case. It's likely that, because they are from Xenokuni and not Elysium, Hakka and Shinri's astrological thematic is based not on western astrology, but on Eastern astrology, which uses an entirely different naming system and has a completely separate set of constellations. Unfortunately, I know diddly squat about Eastern astrology, so I wouldn't be able to tell you. I do know both of their Kanji naming share some themes about 'Temples' or 'Gates', which I understand is an important factor in Japanese astrology specifically, so that might be something to look into. That aside, I seriously doubt they'd leave the triangle trilogy incomplete. Not only is the triangle Cover Corp's logo, but the three triangles are the constellations that signal the changing seasons, the changing times: Tempus, according to Altare himself, means "Time of Change". I'm betting that at some point in the future, during a Spring, we'll see the release of four more Holo Stars EN members named after the remaining seasonal triangle constellation stars to complete the set. "Oh, but there's only three possible stars left in the Spring Triangle that aren't taken, there can't be four new members-" That's where you're wrong, kiddo. SECRET SPRING TRIANGLE(?) STAR #4: Cor Caroli, "The Heart", is an oft-forgotten star neighboring the Spring Triangle. When attached to the asterism of the Spring Triangle, disconnecting Spica from Denebola and becoming a bridge between them, it transforms the Spring Triangle into a separate four-star constellation called The Great Diamond, which serves the same purpose as the Triangle - foretelling the arrival of Spring. Factor in the pick-your-own-third-star option from the regular spring triangle, and it doesn't matter that Arcturus is already taken, we're left with exactly four non-taken stars needed to complete the whole set; Spica, Denebola, Regulus, and Cor Caroli, all of them members of the spring constellation. The perfect cap-off. Anyway, thank you for coming to my vtuber astrology lore ted talk Ft. Beetlejuice.

For those that care, the one that least follows the trend is Magni. Altair, Deneb, Vega, Sirius, Procyon, and Betelgeuse. Hakka and Shinri are from outside the group and entered later in lore, so they don't fit the trend. I saw someone say they are related too temples but it was fairly weak... Anyway, the two out are Deneb and Vega. Vesper means "evening star" in Latin, though, so going from Vega to Vesper makes sense. Deneb doesn't fit the trend as well because Magni Dezmond means "Mighty" in Latin and "Person from South Munster" (its a long explanation, but it is what the word looks like in its native Irish) respectively. However, there is the story that leads to Tanabata that links both pieces of Magni's names together - the Summer Triangle is all involved, in fact. The Chinese version of the story (which became a part of the Japanese myth for reference) is that of Qi Xi. She was represented by the star Altair...and the man she married was represented by the star Vega. [Please don't go there. I'm not doing this to ship people, I swear this is the story.] Anyway, the two were separated because Qi Xi's father was so angry the two stopped doing their respective jobs...and on one day each year they were allowed to meet each other. But, Qi Xi cannot reach him across the heavens; so the Magpies (represented by Deneb) formed a bridge to reunite the two loves. Reason Magni Dezmond is named that is because Magpies are connected to Deneb in myth. Oh, and the day the two lovers reunite is specifically Oct 23, which is two days after Magni's birthday. It isn't perfect. I will admit, its a LOT of weak wordplay. But still, lives rent free in my brain.

The Tanabata connection is cool! I think the original inspiration are the Winter and Summer triangles. The Summer triangles is Deneb (Dezmond), Vega (Vesper) and Altair (Altare). Winter triangle is Betelgeuse (Bettel), Procyon (Flayon), and Sirius (Axel Syrios). You can actually see this in the art of the full Tempus art at the guild; the members are physically oriented with regards to each other in the shape of the triangles (eg Magni far left, Vesper middle, Altare at right and the Winter triangle group similarly done to their right).

if you still need more proof, the stars part are all on their last name. it might sound like a stretch, but this could explains why the official spelling is Noir Vesper despite him often pronounce it as Vesper Noir. Flayon as Procyon sounds like a stretch as well, but if you consider Sirius and Betelgeuse combined with Procyon creates winter triangle (mirroring Altair-Deneb-Vega as summer triangle), it's the closest match. having this info before VG debut might actually be a multi-layered joke because Axel used to be the only one on the complete opposite season triangle due to him living in North Elysium (but the pattern no longer work now and instead created two complete triangles for the "original" Tempus members since Hakka and Shinri are new recruits, lorewise)

I know magni was joking, but seriously, how come it looks EXACTLY like a stick? At some point between it's nearest ancestor and full stick, there's a period of time where the species is in-between bugbug and stickbug. How did those not fully (but slightly more) sticklike stickbugs out perform less sticklike stickbugs when they're camouflage still sucks. It's not like they knew the final goal was to be sticklike.
@-FFFridge
@-FFFridge Жыл бұрын
Being slightly stick-like was enough to confuse some predators, which meant more slightly-stickbugs survived, and so they spread more. with them becoming the common gene in the stickbug-ancestor population, the chances grew for another random mutation that made them even more stick-like, heightening their chances of survival even further. Eventually, through buildup of random mutations that happened to be beneficial, they became the stickbug we know and love. You can also consider their predators- as time went on, they also gained benficial mutations through random chance and became better hunter. Maybe they gained better ability to discern stick-like bugs from actual sticks? If that were the case, that would put more pressure (as in, less chance of survival) on the stick-like bugs, and would mean stick-like bugs that are better at their disguise would survive and spread their genes in the next generation, turning the entire population more stick-y.

It's a bit of an exercise to wrap ones head around this but on the one hand you have to take into account how fucking long bugs already live on our planet and on the other hand the life cycle of a bug is also much shorter than ours, meaning that their "ancestors" had even more chances to alter their gene pool via evolution (and random gene mutation). It's one of the reasons why certain viruses or bacteria can alter their attributes so fast (Like mutation variants of certain viruses). Also many of them can just reproduce on their own.

I love food, and he has some pretty creative ideas and a solid understanding of nuances for a home cook.

im also taking bio and my teacher mentioned that if you put the timeline of evolutionary history in the span of time on a clock, humans only appear in the minute leading up to midnight, which puts into perspective how long we’ve been around

Absolutely based. All the chemistry teacher would have to say “here is this overcomplicated equation which says stuff, the square of this says where an electron is. If you get more electrons, you add nodes to the wave, so you split up that sphere and now you have weird dumbbells“ and they'd be done. But no, if a student ever asks, all they do is "that's because the schrödinger equation tells us the probability" and show the overcomplicated thing again, and once more nobody gets anything xD

Yes, animals can change their genes, little by little. Even humans can do that. In my country (and in our neighbors too) there's a sea nomad tribe called Bajau (locally known as Badjao) that can hold their breath up to 5mins (is what I remember but I could be wrong) underwater. They were studied by scientists and they were observed to have bigger lungs than normal and something about their blood being able to store more oxygen. I recall the Sherpas having similar traits.

It will make more sense if magni imagines evolution as all bugs being relatively the same but there are some outliers that like have better vision or better gut microbes that lets them have certain advantages and adaptation to the world. Those special outliers develop minscule adaptations but when they pass those genes, those traits get refined and voila that evolution.
