You would still need to grind to level up for other jobs, but you're still "you." Not another character you had to make in order to get a different experience. The only other game that I felt almost did it right was TERA with its complex classes and combat, but the Korean MMO mentality still plagued it with gender-locking and tying one class to each character.

MapleStory 2's biggest problem was that it became a mobile gacha style game that had constant daily / weekly quests that could be reset with money and items that could only be obtained using money. This worked well in Korea, though many of the players reverted back to MapleStory 1 because they were already too invested. Here in America that just didn't work. The company tried to make the game free-to-play here, only to realize that it wouldn't work without changing the core parts of the game, which would result in two entirely different games mechanically. When I played MapleStory 2 Korea during Beta Testing, the game was so much more fun. You grinded for everything you had, upgraded your gear, joined parties for more EXP, did Party Quest for items, fought world bosses for crystals to upgrade your skills, fought raid bosses for end game gear, and hanged out with people just like in MapleStory 1. Then a big update came in Korea (the same one the Global version launched with) that removed the need of crystals to upgrade your skills, removed the EXP buff from parties, added a story quest that skipped you past tons of content / levels / quests / party quests, added a quick travel to make you not explore the maps, and made a bunch of content locked behind daily / weekly grinds that you could reset with money / multiple characters. Here in America, we couldn't reset our tries, so they gave us free rewards to try and keep us happy, but this made people's characters too strong without any effort. This left us with only aiming for end game gear / end game bosses, which just felt like a grind fest of logging onto multiple max level characters, doing the events and the bosses in hope to get enough material to upgrade our gear in order to fight the bosses. In the end, Nexon of America just gave up. They kept losing players, the game never got fixed, and the higher ups realized that it was a losing battle. Really sucks too, cause I absolutely loved the fighting mechanics, the skills, and the visual look of it all.

@TheHeavyModd
@TheHeavyModd Жыл бұрын
I remember being so hyped for MS2, and dismayed at the game not having a global release. And when the game finally came out globally (too late if you ask me -- my excitement for the game had considerably diminished by then), I was disappointed with what the game actually was. What really killed my enthusiasm quickly was the story quest that railroaded me through the world. Of coutse, I could have simply not followed that quest line, but I felt like the game was signaling to me that it was the appropriate way to ecperience the game, so I obliged. There was very little in the way of community, or of any communication between players whatsoever as a matter of fact. Very frequently, maybe every 30 minutes the game would prompt me to teleport into a shallow minigame with other players, but that got old quickly as it simply was no susbsitute for proper social engagement. The quest line itself was also boring. It was rife with cutscenes depicting people I didn't care about interacting with each other or with my character. I wasn't immersed in the story, and I wasn't engaged with the game. It felt like a poor single player experience, and because the quest line impelled me to ignore the world of Maplestory 2 the experience ended up being very linear. I didn't get to really explore the world. After maybe 5-6 hours of playing I deicded I had seen enough. The original maplestory's virtues were alwats the community and the world to me at least (and of course the music). Maplestory 2 in its global release state flopped hard on both accounts. It's frustrating to me because there was potential for so much more. The community was given so many cool things like instruments to play with, and player housing, and being able to custonize clothing and whatnot. And the gameplay was a big step in the right direction, changing from a pure numbers game into a more skill-based game. I remember watching manh videos of MS2 when it released in Korea, and feeling giddy about the prospect of reliving my childhood MMO experience for the first time again. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

They started cutting content too. Just off the top I think there was an entire profession like potion crafting, guild sky castles, the entire open world pvp faction areas, guild titles, all completely removed for zero reason. Every single new class was girl gender locked, at the very end they started giving them to the guys but it was too little too late. The game didn't die of old age, it strait up killed itself. Horrible outcome when you consider that the combat still to this day not only holds up, but I would say is still one of if not the best from any mmo. @@lopolka5373 Honestly I loved the contrast with the Elin and Popori. The lore implies that they're Mother Nature's avatars and are basically there to protect the environment. Baraka represented knowledge, Aman represented physical strength, Elves and Castanics represented technological advancement, and Humans represented social unity. Too bad the devs forgot TERA had an actual story to it.
@Boyzby
@Boyzby Жыл бұрын
The thing about XIV is that the devs care about the game, so if there was ever that one update that somehow just screwed everything up, they would actually rectify it. They did it for Heavensward when the raiding scene almost died because of Gordias. Hell, they did it for PVP this expansion by radically changing it and people actually play it now. Some devs do stuff on their own time, like adding flying to ARR zones or fitting at least some stuff to Viera and Hrothgar. If 1.0 didn't kill the game, and XI is still going, XIV's not going anywhere any time soon. They're even doing a graphical overhaul for the next expansion, so it should look much nicer. I feel like maybe he'd enjoy Eureka and trying to get all the monster drops from there-I still don't have my Cassie earring or whatever the Speed Belt is now...
@BOverlord
@BOverlord Жыл бұрын
One of the neatest little things that the devs for XIV did was for the Monster Hunter trial. Years after the trial was released there were players who noticed that when you broke the Rathalos body parts they wouldn't actually break off like in MonHun. So the devs went in and changed it for players. This was sometime in late ShB patches while the Rathalos fight came out in SB. They didn't have to do it and it was barely important, but players asked and the devs delivered.

@@Crow-wv6if DPS checks were insane. Almost impossible for some groups even with the proper item level. People were actually transferring worlds to find groups to beat it since this was before world travel was a thing. Also ironically during that time they introduced the original Diadem which is one piece of content that actually no longer exists in the game. In it you could easily get an i210 weapon, which had randomized stats. The problem with this was that Gordias Savage also dropped i210 weapons. So lots of people just dropped Gordias for those. Plus the upgraded tomestone weapon at the time was also i210 lol.

@@EihaMudo Oh no I agree for sure. Old Mabi is a design nightmare that when I started back in middle school I didn't understand just how bad it actually was. It didn't help that there weren't really that many games that weren't like this in some way. Runescape's leveling in later levels was just as obnoxious, and LOTRO had some insanely annoying grind achievements you had to get for specific stats. It's purely a pain point of knowing how much time I wasted on Mabi grinding all those skills to rank 1, putting in all that time leveling, only for it to now be surpassed in a few hours. I know it's needed, but it's just one of those "back in my day" kind of complaints lol. As for FF14, part of the reason I keep playing it is purely because of that balance, and the fact that the daily roulettes are, effectively completely optional. I get on 3 times a week to raid with friends and dont touch the dailies at all unless I need to give them mats for potions. The rest of the time i'm just doing stuff I want to do.

You, because you have other things in your life and you don't have the time you once had when younger. The game industry, because they are trying really hard to make you only play that MMO and nothing else or have very long periods of downtime between content, so you either don't have enough time to upkeep or you drop it after months of nothing happening, not to mention the ever growing Pay to Win in them. Proper parkour, the most in-depth player/guild housing systems, a way to pay for your subscription just by playing the game enough, a unique art-style and some of the coolest classes and abilities I'd seen in a long time.

Biggest thing I appreciate about FF14 is the lack of FOMO. You can come back once a month and pick off from where you left. Obviously there are some new things to grind for, but the game's enjoyment doesn't decrease just because you missed an event or gear update. So many MMORPGs and genres akin to it are designed to encourage players to frequent it on a daily, artificially increasing its traffic with little indication of the game's overall enjoyment. People who don't play on a daily are left in the dust when future content rolls around.

Having been playing another MMO from Nexon(Mabinogi) for almost 15 year's now. I really, really, really hope that one day they just update the game and bring it into the modern era. For those that don't know Mabinogi is the other MMO by Nexon that's been around since about 2006 or so, think that was the beta release. But, I mean, this game was WAY ahead of it's time and truthfully kind of still is. No level cap, character's can learn any skill they want, magic, archery, cooking, want to whip people, go for it, you name it, it's got it and you don't have to make a new character and start from level 1 to learn ANYTHING, just use the same one and learn every skill in the game, get to level 20000(no that's not a cap btw, it can go WAY beyond) and enjoy yourself, the world is truthfully your oyster in this game. The story is fun, compelling and interesting, something I can't say about other MMO's, NPC's have personalities, voice lines and whole lives, questlines that you can go on. To top it all off, this game isn't a pay to win MMO, everything is available to you as a Free Player you can either buy cosmetics from other player's or grind out and get the best weapons yourself from field bosses. Like, if a game like this released now, i'm 100% sure MMO player's would have a field day. But unfortunately, mabinogi's graphics are good, sometimes, but awful other times and the engine it's built with doesn't play well with modern hardware so you can experience crashes, graphical glitches and such. Legit, all they would have to do is update the texture's, models and lighting engine to be more in line with modern MMO's(I'd personally use a Cell-Shaded approach) and it would be a great game.

I can't use the Talis to heal/buff far off allies or concentrate enemies into one space with Zondiiru, NGS's Assault Rifle and Jet Boots have none of the skills that made them fun to play in PSO2, and there's no AIS Vega. Add on that basically everything is luck-based to the point where every viable weapon has a ridiculous 50-100% damage output, and... well, let's just say that if I didn't love my Teammates I would either only go back to regular PSO2 or just have completely uninstalled by now.
@TheMoonman4
@TheMoonman4 Жыл бұрын
@@RykenInverse if you're referring to the damage variance on weapons, honestly that hasn't bothered me too much. Back in classic PSO2, it was relatively fool-proof to get setups with 100% crit, but that felt like it made instances where if your crit *wasn't* at 100% (like if you relied on a buff and it timed out on you), your damage tanked hard. It just felt like a requirement to build into, invalidating damage variance as a mechanic at all, to say nothing that DEX was practically a worthless stat. The game was (initially) setup to have tons of unique builds to play with, and your ideas with talis sound fun, but the balance was never there since there was a lot of unfun prep work that felt required to do (100% crit, affixing, feeding the Mag, etc.) before any build/playstyle could stand on its own, and it likely wouldn't be "viable" anyway because of all that compared to a regular meta build/loadout
@RykenInverse
@RykenInverse Жыл бұрын
@@TheMoonman4 If it was just the damage variance on weapons being stupid and awful, that'd be one thing, but more than it being just a bad mechanic in and of itself, the issue here is more that it's indicative of two larger overall problems with NGS. The first is the obsession with luck-based mechanics coming from a dev team that seems to have come more from the Sammy side than the Sega side, as seen in the lack of a KinQue schedule, the awful weather mechanic that made NGS's nickname "Amagoi (Praying for Rain) Online 2", and their utter refusal to fix the PSE Burst mechanic (even the flashy bar on the side makes you think it's a goddamn pachinko machine rather than a video game.) The second, and somehow even more damning problem than the first, is that it's indicative of the dev team's attitude towards the playerbase. When 75%-100% was the norm, players by and large gravitated towards Kagen Hosei OPs to try and get the weapons as close to 100% as possible, and rather than recognizing that the variance mechanic was a bad idea that no one wanted and fixing it, 7 star and up weapons dropped to 50%, and due to the way that calculations work with percentages in NGS, all those builds that had achieved 100% were suddenly dropped down to 65%, which is especially awful with how resource-intensive making gear is in both PSO2 and NGS. In other words, because the devs decided the players were playing the game wrong (not actually breaking any rules, mind you,) everyone got shat on. I'm not an MMO player by any means, PSO2 was my first (and honestly probably for my whole life going to be my only) MMO, but I would imagine that by nature of the beast a good MMO requires a dev team that works WITH the players to make an enjoyable experience even more than a normal video game does, but the NGS devs seem to be coming in from the casino mindset of "players are things that are meant to be goaded with flashy lights and the dopamine hype of the JACKPOT WIN that happens once in a blue moon and must lose the rest of the time." It's god-awful, and I'm at the point where even if they admitted that NGS was a mistake and finally went back to make Episode 7 like they should have in the first place, I wouldn't trust them to make anything as good as PSO2 ever again.

It hits close to home the love for maplestory and i wished that Nexon didn't mess it up post big bang, I missed playing with my brother, cousin and friends doing crimson woodkeep PQ, Zakum, Pink Bean, those good times were it was for fun, talking, making friends not a chore to do daily/weekly/monthly, now even some years ago when I revisited maplestory to see how it's going i got to crimson woodkeep and saw it so abandoned there's was no life on it, same goes for the Halloween haunted house outside the phantom forest in NLC or the Power rangers base, it's a shame that it ended to quickly for me

Coming from a Mapler that played Maplestory for 7 Years straight. The feeling when the Big Bang Patch landed and watching people reaching my level without much of an effort makes me feel like my time invested isnt worth anything. Just memories of an age long past.

Play a private server before big bang its way better and its actually balanced with slow updates that let you adapt and learn them without 20 updates a week

I wasn't playing anymore just before big bang and never felt that pain firsthand, but it still made me sad to hear. My whole summer spent grinding lv100 bucc suddenly meant almost nothing in hindsight :') Good memories, at least

I took a hiatus after Big Bang and decided to return with a new account. While it is frustrating to realize reaching level 70 is much quicker (took my about 6 hours IIRC), I do appreciate that means less time spent grinding. That said, hitting level 100 is still a big grind, and I gave up eventually since I don't have that kind of patience anymore. But I have no idea what happened to party quests, going to channel 1 at peak hours and I still can't find a party. Not sure if this is just a SEA server thing.

7:49 Dude.. PSU was my first experience with MMO's, and it has coloured my perception ever since. I love how each planet had it's own feel through the lobbies and missions, and creatures. there were different weapon manufacturers with different stat focuses that meant you could pick a weapon class and manufacturer combo that worked for you. The weapon sandbox was massive, and I'm so glad that the PSU Clementine servers exist so I can still play it 11 years after the official servers went offline. I was so excited for PSO2 when I saw it announced... 10 years ago, and then the waiting happened... after 6 years, I jumped through the hoops, got the tweaker, and player the JP version. Had some fun, but the fact a lot of stuff was still untranslated in the tweaker really hurt my potential in it. the the en version was announced, so I was like "cool, I'l start from scratch and play it that way." and I did, and it was.. mediocre... the world was such a downgrade from PSU, and the combat, while fun and flashy, felt overly punishing to anyone who wasn't min maxing with the armour and weapon souls and tweaking their photon arts and just... ugh... and then NGS came out and it just was like "We noticed that FFXIV is still kicking our ass, so what if we became that? But also took the battlepower system so that even if you're the right level for a quest, if you haven't been grinding your weapons and armour and messing with the abilities for them, you're SOL." I want to love PSO2, since it has the sci-fi aesthetic that I love... but I just can't...

Microsoft did nothing to ruin PSO2 Its allways been ruined since PSO2 EP5 because of SEGA Management and Daiki Hamazaki the crappy director

@@RenoKyrie I said nothing implicating Microsoft in the downfall of PSO2. If you actually read my comment you will see that.

oof TERA -- an unclosed wound. Played races I didn't want to play because of the race dependent skill differences. The playstyle was on paralleled, even though my graphics could barely handle it.

The fact that maple story went away from PQ's made me very sad. What a game in the past though.

Hearing him talk about TERA just instantly made me sad again, the second it went Free To Play I went DUMB hard on that game only for them to fuck it so badly that they killed it off. All that time and money down the drain and now of course the servers are shut down (apart from some Private Servers but they are just as dead)

Ahhh, PaD, my original gacha game. So glad to hear it all from someone else, instead of the monologue in my head LOL. FF14 is a classic JRPG first, a MMO second. If you aren't invested in the story, it'll lose you way before it goes anywhere. Source: I made it to Stormblood and couldn't be fucked to enjoy the story, so it felt like a pointless slog. I feel like I'm too old for JRPG stories anyways so it wasn't going anywhere, but if it sounds like a fun 500 hours go right ahead.
