In the narrative it has always been easier to blame Hurrem but Mahidevran allegedly did kill the stronger contender to the throne who was Mehmet after her son's many mistakes otherwise Mustafa would have never left Manisa, Suleyman had become increasingly paranoid due to disease. There’s a naivety about Mustafa it’s almost frustrating to watch a 1st born princes act in this manner. I think mustafa’s first mistake was that held on to unresolved resentment towards he’s father because of the way sulaiman treated his mother in their marriage. I think sulaiman had sensed that resentment in he’s son long before mustafa was able to admit it to himself let alone resolve it with his father. Early on in their sword fights and hunting trips we got a glimpse of this.

I wish Hurrem would be kinder to Mustafa. I understand she sees him as a threat to her children but he does genuinely love his siblings and the more openly hostile she is to him, the more he hunkers down against her and ultimately, her children. She added fuel to the fire when she could have so easily put it out years before just by being kind to him. They had a decent relationship when he was a child, she even protected him at one point when they were all scared and stuck at Hatice's palace.
