Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy

Күн бұрын

To celebrate the Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy's first year on KZbin we thought we'd paint a beloved Age of Sigmar character that has been reimagined and still looks magnificent... SIGVALD, PRINCE OF SLAANESH from Games Workshop. In this guide we show you how to easily paint that gold armour, how to apply a simple wet blending technique to his flowing cloak and of course, how to get that unique effect on his mirror shield. We also just want to say a massive thank you for the support, kindness and awesomeness you have shown us over the last year. Here's to many more. Remember to Subscribe to the channel if you haven't done so already and if you want to see more full tutorials like this one then why not check out our website at www.duncanrhodes.com where we have well over 100 painting guides.
Thanks you.

I've been painting miniatures for about 15 years now. Looking back, had I seen this video, it would have rocketed my skills ahead 5 years of fumbling on my own pre-youtube. I honestly think this is the single best painting tutorial on KZbin, at least that I've seen in my years of painting. Easy to follow, relaxed, all of his tools and paints are easily obtained or already owned by most of his audience, all the techniques are easy to apply, BRILLIANT sneaky wet blending lesson, and a great finished product. This would be a great model to pick up if only to have it to follow this guide along with Duncan. Thanks for the DRPA and all your years of great, informative, wholesome content!

An alternate idea to the Wildwood shading of the gold armor is to mix Shyish Purple with Fyreslayer Flesh. The purple tone rather than going with a pure brown helps increase the contrast of the shadows to the gold armor due to the colors being complimentary. It also helps tie the entire model together by introducing similar tones in the shadows as you have on the cape.
@srbrant5391
@srbrant5391 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve used that technique in my watercolors recently, actually. The results are spectacular!
@srsgoblin
@srsgoblin 3 жыл бұрын
@@srbrant5391 I learned it from Sorastro, another terrific painter on KZbin. Specifically his one on Thanos from Marvel: Crisis Protocol. He did some NMM gold for the Mad Titan, and used some purple in the shadows and I was like "oh my God why don't I do this?!" Been playing around with the concept ever since. I tend to use more orange-tinted Browns when I paint something majority blue, and contrast red miniatures with grassy green bases. Stuff like that. Little things to give that extra bit of jump.
@Born_Stellar
@Born_Stellar 3 жыл бұрын
@@srsgoblin thanks for the tips! one thing I found recently that helps me select colours is considering that brown is literally just dark orange, and the only reason we consider it a different colour is because english has a word for it.

Really amazing job. Next I would like to see a tutorial on a Sequitor. Specifically a Sequitor character that has a Rakarth Flesh tabard because there's just no good tutorials out there. I swear I've watched every one and none of them do a good job of painting that tabard. You yourself have a Battle Ready tutorial back from your Warhammer days, but still, the tabard looks rough on that one too. I'm sure if you did one of your newer more detail oriented tutorials on it it'd look amazing. I just can't get the transition from the deep shaded areas to the peaks of the creases to look good no matter how many different ways I try.

Finally we move into wet blending! I've always found that while many great folks in the mini painting community (Miniac, Vince Venturela, etc) have put together notable resources on how the technique itself works, a very grounded breakdown like what we've come to know and love from dear old Duncan has just been missing. Sometimes it's good to hone in on a particular application of a concept rather than speaking in broad strokes, and I think the wet blending used here is a very good example for people who know the general idea of what needs to be done, but could use a solid yet both quick and simple explanation and example on exactly how it's applied

That was what the GW painting team came up with to make painting easier for casual people that get anxious. Duncan's job was pretty much to show how easy it is to do that. Painting should never be daunting or stressful. Too many people look at Golden Demon winners and end up putting themselves down thinking that they'll never achieve something that good, but they don't realise that it takes thousands and thousands of hours of work to get to that standard, whereas the GW way is about making things simple and effective, but most of all, enjoyable.

Please please please do more tutorials in this style duncan. I learn so much more when you go further in depth with your painting. Even with your gw tuts such as andarielle etc your teaching method is so good when you do more advanced techniques. I honestly believe thats why you are so popular. Generally the longer the tutorials and direction (like this one) the better they are. Darren Lathems small video series did the same thing, and its amazing how well you two get your points across.
