King Magnifico was meant to be the triumphant return of the Disney Villain, a time honored tradition spanning generations of Disney Storytellers that has led to the creation of classic villains like The Evil Queen, Scar, Captain Hook, Maleficent, Ursula, Jafar, and Dr. Facilier! After examining Magnifico’s character for months though… I have come to believe that the creative team was unable to execute on this vision. But for the longest time, I struggled to find the words to describe what I felt went wrong, until I turned to the wise words of two of Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men. Today, using the lessons from Disney themselves, I want to explain why Disney failed to create a new Disney Villain.

ABOUT ME
I'm Isaac Carlson, a creator based in Orlando, Florida, and ever since I can remember I’ve loved Disney. My fondest childhood memories come from visiting Walt Disney World with my family. I grew up loving Spider-Man, Star Wars, Pixar, and the classic animated films from Disney. The stories, characters, and worlds I adored as a child eventually inspired me to create videos of my own here on KZbin, and it changed my life. On this channel, I explore the characters and worlds that ignite the child within all of us! My goal is to create a community built on wonder, positivity, and optimism where passionate fans can unite to celebrate the magic of animated films. Here, we believe dreams can come true.
Have a magical day! #disney #wish #animation

The problem is that current Disney writers don't fully trust the old Disney tropes anymore. They want to be modern and subversive and still be classic Disney. They started writing a fully evil villain, then they got worried that audiences wouldn't buy a villain that acts evil just because he can. So they gave him a sad backstory and decided to make Amaya good just to make him more "complex". That's why we lost evil Amaya. She was made good so she would be Magnifico's conscience in order to hastily make him a more complex and tragic villain. That way two great characters were wasted.
@Mgauge
@Mgauge Ай бұрын
And once they realized he wasn't even a villain anymore, they tossed in an evil book to possess him to remove any and all complexity and have everyone treat him as if he was as always just an evil tyrant. All without a second of thought into the implications or questions of the possibility that maybe the other characters might have some responsibility for the outcome or may have some problems without him around .

The problem is the people of Rosas don't feel like good people. They feel like the Who's from the 2000 Grinch movie. It's never a good sign when the Grinch's line: "The avarice never ends! I want golf clubs, I want diamonds. I want a pony, so I can ride it twice, get bored and then sell it to make glue." Feels applicable to the towns people in this movie. Cause no matter what Magnifico did they would have turned on him at some point anyway.

It depends on how we look at it. even if it was intended for that, we can flip it to say that good things shouldn’t be quenched. Like, Asha’s grandfather’s desire was to inspire people with joy and music, not to overthrow Magnífico or inspire rebellion. And Star taking back those wishes, could represent God restoring something that was part of them. I was thrown off by the pentagram, but it was on me.

The writers could not decide whether they wanted a full blown classic Disney villain or a troubled antagonist, because it seems like they just mixed two different plot points into one character with no flow or and idea of what it wants to be. The movie also literally does not make Asha any less likable than she is in the beginning, especially considering how the movie never changes at all, it is all the same with Magnifico and with Asha

King Magnifico was being a king. If they wanted him to be evil, they should have shown him as such as Isaac said, But the guy does nothing bad in the entire movie. According to the movie, "wanting to keep his position in power" to protect his house and his people is irredeemably evil. But it's his job as king. Which makes him an even bigger victim. He was just doing his job and Asha decided he was wrong to do so.

I feel like King Magnifico's character in the movie we got makes much more sense as a tragic Oedipus Rex-like figure who snaps and falls from grace after getting pushed to his breaking point rather than a classic Disney villain who revels in how evil they are and doesn't waste time with their feelings (unless it's Frollo lusting over Esmeralda maybe). If Disney made him the main character and if his descent into madness was portrayed as a tragedy rather than "hmm, well you do love mirrors," I think this movie would've been much better received and made for a more compelling story.

So as I've seen surmised by many others on KZbin (including profession writers, filmmakers, critics, and storytellers in general). Is that Magnifico is not evil, he's not even malicious until Asha starts pressing his buttons. He was a good, if somewhat egotistical king, but his kingdom was prosperous, and its populace was content. Everyone was happy to live there, knowing full well what the 'price' of living there was. Disney inadvertently (almost) did something extremely ambitious. The antagonist was not a villain (if anything, a Well-Intentioned Extremist) and the protagonist was not a hero (rather acting as a Butterfly of Doom) to the point that it could be argued that Asha is Disney's first Princess Villain.

If you have to drastically rewrite your villain because you don't think your hero could beat them, maybe the problem is how you write your hero? I mean, you have the movie start with her interviewing to be his apprentice. Shouldn't that imply she at least has a little magic of her own? Why not lean on that and show her growing in power and skill as things go on until she's powerful enough to at least defend herself against Magnifico and Amaya? That way your villains can be more threatening and she can have some level of growth and challenge. Maybe show that she's actually clever and capable by winning with a creative solution against her more powerful foes? It would do a lot more than her somehow beating him with a random crowd song. It's more empowering than just having people say she's supposedly so kind and selfless for the sixth time or the useless goat. This is some basic stuff here, yet nobody in charge of this movie seems to have thought about it.

I think they wanted Asha to be a "strong, independent woman" and they didn't want to give her an obstacle she couldn't overcome on her own. But the irony is that in the final version of the film, Asha ends up needing help from her friends anyway. So the filmmakers should have just stuck with the original script and had Asha rally others to assist her in her cause. It would have been a powerful lesson to teach kids that "you don't have to do it all on your own; there is no embarassment in asking for help; we are stronger together."

Yeah Asha felt very underwhelming as a main protagonist, there's just nothing really going for her even after she literally acquires a magic wand. Aladdin had no magical powers of his own but was a much more compelling character to watch who was able to get by using his street smarts even before coming across the Genie. Both of their respective antagonists get defeated by getting sucked into something but seeing Aladdin outwit Jafar highlighted his strengths as a character and felt more rewarding than Asha singing a reprise and somehow everyone wished hard enough to set Star free from the staff and replace him with Magnifico I guess? As far as Disney movies dealing with the concept of wishes go, Aladdin takes the cake for me.

The movie gaslights the antagonist into villainy, it's so weird! Which speaking of...where did this evil book come from? Did Magnifico fight evil sorcerers in his past? We don't know! It would be much more compelling if it was HIS book and he used to be evil before founding the kingdom. He made a conscious effort to live a life for good so he sealed the book away. It would explain it's draw it has on him. Asha's crap and his paranoia cause him to fall back into villainy.

Like Cinderella becomes marries the prince and condemns the fairy godmother as a witch leading to the death of several women. She grants Peter Pan the wish of never growing up by creating neverland and he starts kidnapping and killing kids when they say they want to grow up. Turns a mermaid human for all mermaids to become zoo attractions. Stuff like that. In the end Asha would be a jaded person but I’d have Star come back to give hope that you just have to find the right people to make change for the better. That trust is a two way street.

I felt that the citizens of Rosas are stupid, annoying, and ungrateful. They live in a peaceful kingdom with wish granting king, and they still wanted more. If they could make their own wishes come true then why give them away? And the Queen was useless, she could have helped him with the wishes, she could have examined the wishes for him, she could have tried harder to deter him away from the evil spell book, I felt like she gave up on him to quickly, she should have tried harder to save him from the evil, it felt like their love was superficial and meaningless. They could have had him eating wishes. The result being that the victim was sent to another world. He gained power from consuming those wishes. His motivation being his tragic back story. A classic, I find happiness by inflicting my sadness on to others. He gets away with it, because people forget that the victim existed. Asha sees him doing it. Preventing the mind wipe. It happens to a friend of hers or her grandfather and thus she has a motivation for standing up to the villain. In the end she goes on a journey to other worlds to find the victims and bring them back home. Simple, clear motivations on both ends. I even provided a way for the victims to be transformed and the hero to go find them. Enabling the opportunity for multiple shorts. On multiple formats. Even connecting the Kingdom Hearts video game.

In the movie’s defense, it isn’t made totally clear to the people of Rosas that their wishes may never be granted, else why would they risk it? They’re happy because they exist in ignorance, not knowing what their wish was, but hopeful that they may be the next one to have it granted. When Asha discovers Magnifico won’t ever grant her grandfather’s wish, she is devastated. And when she asks Magnifico to just give it back then, he refuses, essentially robbing him of ever having the chance to achieve his dreams the old fashioned way. In all fairness though, the writers could have made this conflict a little clearer, making Asha’s goals a little less ambiguous.

They didn’t have to try to make magnifico sympathetic so much in the beginning. They could have posed his good nature at the beginning as a false face where he just wanted to hoard all the wishes cuz maybe it gave him power. And if only they went with the evil couple idea and have the queen be evil too. In one scene he went from calmly explaining the dangers of vague wishes to ‘I decide what’s right!’ And there’s too many questions as to why no one in the kingdom had a problem losing their wishes and were still happy. They weren’t depressed or heavily affected losing it, except for asha’s one friend for some reason. It didn’t become an issue until asha realized her grandpa wouldn’t get his wish granted. There was so many ways the movie could have changed and been better. Not great but a lot better

Don’t get me wrong, I love Zootopia (and I’m really excited for the sequel next year) but Bellwether’s reveal of being the mastermind came the hell out of nowhere, even after they tried to explain why she did what she did. I can also see why many felt they waited way too late in the film to reveal it, by that point the film had maybe 5-10 minutes left.

In my opinion if your villain is such a decent human being that you need to have him be corrupted by the evil book of evilness then you might want to do a few rewrites. Plus, one thing I hate about this movie is how barely anything that's set up in the first act actually effects the plot later: Magnifico's mysterious past: Never brought up again Asha's dad being connected to the stars and supposedly being close with Magnifico: Never brought up again Valentino being able to talk: Just an excuse for some funny jokes and a way to justify the cute animal sidekicks existence

The problem with Magnifico is that he, as stated, was not ever a real threat. I think of other evil sorcerers across Disney history like Ursula or even outside Disney like Voldemort and Magnifico just doesn't stack up. These other mentioned evil sorcerers demonstrated multiple times that they were willing to kill and destroy everything the protagonist and its world knew simply to gain personal power or prestige, up to and including murdering the protagonist. Magnifico might throw around scary green lights and have a so-called "Forbidden Book of Magic" but any REAL evil sorcerer would toss him around like a sack of potatoes with both hands tied behind their back. I'm willing to bet even non-magical folk could easily sweep the floor with him, that's how much Disney nerfed him

As bad and disappointing of villain Magnifico is, i hope Disney doesnt take the wrong lessons away from Wish, and stops trying to give us classic villains again, because Magnifico being a proper villain from the getgo wasnt the problem, the problem was the execution and that all potentially cool stuff about him was left on the cutting room floor. So i think for their next few films, they look at Magnifico at how NOT to do a villain for their modern times, and instead look at how they can improve upon their first attempt. For example, one of the big problems with Magnifico is that they couldn't decide whether to make him a pure evil villain or a troubled and sympathetic antagonist. So choose between one or the other. Like lets say Moana 2 has a proper villain, instead of doing what you did with Magnifico, choose between one or the other, maybe have a potential villain for Moana 2 be a troubled and sympathetic antagonist. Maybe someone who was wronged by Moanas tribe or one of the other tribes from that movie, and is building up power to get revenge, and in the end, Moana has to talk him or her down and/or try to reason with him or her, maybe takes some ques from Killmonger from Black Panther, where he or she ultimately wins the philosophical argument, despite Moana going about it ij a less violent manner then the villain wouldve. And for Zootopia 2, do the opposite, have the villain of that movie be a pure evil scumbag (perhaps maybe a satire of people like Trump or DeSantis) and have him want to install shock collars on predators and deport the Reptiles (who could be stand-ins for Immigrants), and use that as one of the ways to expand upon the themes of the original Zootopia. Also, Magnifico and Amaya were going to be a villain couple, why not resue that idea for Frozen 3. Have the villains be a villain couple in the form of Anna and Elsa's estranged Aunt and Uncle, specifcally Iduna's twin sister and Agnarrs older half brother, whom want the throne and power of the spirits for themselves. Yes youd have to retcon some stuff. But one, Frozen 2 clearly retconned the mom into an indigenous person, so why should it matter, and two, it could be a cool way to give us a dark mirror/reflection of Anna and Elsa's parents as well as Anna and Elsa themselves. Or hell, have it be a villain family, with the aunt and uncle being dark reflections of the parents while there two children (son and daughter) are black mirrors of Anna and Elsa, you can even use this as an excuse to reuse Elsa's goth design. The point is, disney should use Magnifico as an opportunity to learn from their mistakes for next time, as opposed to just abandoning the concept of proper villains again altogether.

The main problem is Magnifico picks and chooses the wishes on his bases of if he thinks people's intentions of their wishes arr good. She finds that out and wants to change it. Yes, her Saba's wish was the fuel to her changing things but she even ask him that 'So many of these wished won't come true?' The king lays his plans for wish granting right in front of her. And she wants to change that. Also, his desire to be the only one with magic is his downfall. To be the only person with the power is his downfall as well. I think Disney wanted to create a villian that everyone trust. Which they executed very well. I truly believe, just like Hans, in Frozen, he didn't have evil intentions. However, he got greedy for power.

What was so evil about the king anyways. So people agree when they come to the kingdom to give up their greatest desire or wish. And once or twice a month, the king will grant someone's wish. His only real rules are he doesn't grant wishes that could be too vague or may cause the destruction of the Kingdom. Everyone seems to be happy, and full of energy except for one of Usher's friends. I don't get any of the qualities of a Disney villain the king, like I do maleficent, hook, or even jafar. This just seems like play Drop the ball, and we didn't get a truly bad villain that we could have. And I agree, he doesn't have some horrible plot about using the wishes or segregating his subjects. Sure he turns evil in order to protect the kingdom, but that wasn't an evil motive from the very beginning.

They couldve made this movie into a tragic villain. They couldve made it where while Magnifico was going through a spiral of truama and curse they could had the Queen step up and settle things between Asha and him. Cause at the end of day the Queen didnt know what was going and just watched her egotistical but loving become crazed out of no where. He didnt even talk to his wife and wanted try and fix things himself. This couldve been a movie of lessons on misunderstandings, trauma, and ptsd. Rosas was a safe haven with no criminals cause no one had the wish to be one since Magnifico took that Thats all he wanted like others said he was a extremist and very cautious I'm sure at the beginning of making Rosas he didnt give anyone their wish at the beginning until he met his wife compromise and help his trauma. The movie was ok pretty good but it did feel rushed and unfinished. Whoever was overseeing the project shouldve rethought the cuts they made. Magnifico didn't deserve to be a villain, in my opinion. He was misguided in some ways (I guess), but he wasn't a bad person. He switched up so quickly after he sang At All Costs, so much so that it felt a little forced to me. Of course it wasn't nice to hear that her Saba's wish wouldn't be granted but he's not the only one who has a wish that they've been waiting ages for to be granted. Magnifico was quite literally a good man who did what was best for his people and I think it all came to a halt when Asha basically grew frustrated with the fact that he said he simply wouldn't grant her Saba's wish as it wouldn't be fair to just grant his because she asked when he hasn't done it for anyone else. I don't blame him for straight up being like "Wow I'm not surprised you're already asking me to grant the wishes". You can't just grant any and every wish, and Magnifico had a huge burden on himself anyway. He did them a favour by making them forget the wishes honestly. When Asha messes it all up, honestly it did seem a little ungrateful, so "This is the thanks I get?" Was kinda justified in my opinion. She wasn't even listening when he offered her the position and didn't even accept it before she asked him to grant the wish 😭💀 way to go, Asha All I'm saying is that the people of Rosa's knew what to expect when they moved there, and they also should have known that everyone had an equal fair chance of having their wishes granted, so it would be unfair to grant someone's wish just because they asked

I remember in one of the "Wish" review i heard that Asha acts kind of like a villain and Magnifico acts like a hero, who trying his best to help Rosas to grow and after a while he is tired with Rosas - a town full of selfish and self-centered people, who only cares about their wishes. Will be funny if their roles was reversed. Like Asha will be a protaganist who turn into selfish antagonist, who using power of The Star for her own desires and forgets why she wishing on it (yeah, this sounds stupid), and Magnifico will be the one who trying reasoning her that her desires are wrong and curing her from it. And she will be sorry for her selfishness. Yeah, I see that "Wish" could've been great. Asha could've been great, like Simba, Aladdin and Jasmine, Wendy, Cinderella, Ariel, Rapunzel and more. And Magnifico and Amaya as villains could've been great. Like mix of Ursula, Facilier, Jafar, Scar, Captain Hook, Lady Tramain, Gaston and more. That could've been awesome.

Quick Question - Would you say it is accurate to say that there are too many villain apologists in media today? For example, how many times do you hear people say that, "Maleficent should have been invited to the christening if the three good fairies were. King Stefan and Queen Leah picked a side in the fairy conflict." or "Belle should have married Gaston because, given the setting of Beauty and the Beast, Gaston is not about to be executed in the French Revolution." or how many times do you see the same panel from Twisted: the Untold Story of a Royal Vizier in which Gaston, Maleficent, Captain Hook, Scar, and Ursula lament their desires, only to then be horrified when Cruella said she wanted to make a dog-fur coat with puppies?

There certainly are a lot of villain apologists online. Just look at how many people are convinced that Plankton from "SpongeBob SquarePants" is an innocent victim who never does anything wrong (remember when he enslaved all of Bikini Bottom in the movie?).

Not frequently. It's a niche of every piece of work. But I do see an alarming rise in protagonists who behave the worst of ways but are said to be the voice of the truth. Or they never get challenged by the narrative. It does give the wrong lessons, and makes you question more and more about who or what is wrong / right. If doubting supposed good intentions of the main character is what they're aiming at, they're doing it right.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Magnifico was originally going to be either a twist villain or an anti-villain, but then Disney saw everyone complaining about how they wanted straight-up evil Disney villains back and attempted to rewrite Magnifico into one of those... only to fail at it.

The people at Disney and Pixar really need to reopen that book. The movie villains have gotten worse and worse ever since the studio switched to 3D animation. If you want to talk about a story with a well-written Disney villain, you should make some videos about The Owl House. Walt Disney lost a lot of my respect after how shamefully they treated such a great show. 👿

To me, Disney accidentally created the first ever Disney Anti-Villain with tragic good intentions, than Disney Villain with tricks behind them. But, if they didn’t cut corners for this meant 100th anniversary film with Live-Action and non-Disney IP sloppy joes. He could’ve be a proper first modern Disney villain in 2020s that pay tributes to past. Plus based on artbook. His wive could be special bonus and standout.

While i can agree that Disney Villains like Scar, The Evil Queen and Jafar are "better" and iconic, I personally love Magnifico. He's a great new addition to the Disney villains, he believes himself to be the good king, when in reality, he is a narcissistic, greedy man to seeks to keep his kingdom in order by taking away the most important part of a person.

I've heard that Magnifico and his wife were originally intended to be the first ever Disney villain couple, an evil counterpart to Asha and the Star Boy, who was supposed to be her love interest. But Disney didn't want to do a love story because they thought that would be bad for Asha's character, so they made the Magic Star into a cute mascot just to sell toys and also made King Magnifico the bad guy. This is the problem with modern day writing, they're trying to make the villain really sympathetic with a sad backstory instead of making him or her just evil. Sure some people might find these kind of villains one note and evil for the sake of being evil, but it's sort of good story telling since they serve as an antagonist to what the main character believes in or his/her goals.

But let me guess even though they wanted to make Asha the hero they failed to do so am I right? I mean Asha is a idealist who is questioning the flaws in the world around her. Asha's personality consists of her being inviting, warm and so honest brave and optimistic. But from watching the film at least more than once I immediately took notice of a change in her personality. Asha went from a personality of being inviting, warm, So honest, brave and optimistic. To a personality of a narcissistic temperamental rage. And that is not And I repeat NOT something that we expect from a hero heroic character. It's like that song from Wanda vision that said it was Agatha all along. But in this case the villain was Asha all along

So antagonistic rewrite: Magnifico is first depicted as a budding sorcerer that is on his way to ascended the throne. He saw the power in wish making and envied that power, coveting its influence. By learning to absorb people’s wishes, the once peasant Magnifico would gain all that he lacked as a kid: a family, a home, friends and prestige. Using the powers of other’s wishes, Magnifico could wish what he always desired to be but no one gave him a chance to be: a king. But making selfish wishes or absorbing them for someone’s own gain corrupts a Person’s soul. From modest covetous wishes, he became increasingly power hungry. Even as he becomes a king, he hungers for more. Magnifico still has the prestige, people’s minds are erased when their wishes are stollen, so they don’t see him as evil; like a charisma spell as part of his kingly charms. Cut to the present: Asha, a passionate tour guide of the cheery kingdom, discovers people are beginning to suffer increasingly intense nightmares and other ailments. Asha requests an audience of the king, but is denied. Determined, she sneaks in and is horrified at what she sees: Magnifico singing to himself about his wants and growing desire of world conquest and subjugation, which is what is causing people to get nightmares and start to lose individuality/ hope. This triggers Asha’s want song at night after her escape and summons the star, wishing to grant Asha’s wish of solving the town’s struggles. Asha gathers her friends to reclaim the wishes that haven’t been absorbed yet. Magnifico alters her friend’s memories and the townspeople to make her seem like the villain and source of their ills. The star , the goat and Asha are all that’s left as Magnifico asks the citizens to help conquer other cities to claim their wishes for the prosperity of the kingdom to alleviate the curse. Asha here learns the true value of a wish, through loss is to give hope to others through selflessness. Magnifico was selfish and thus only ended up craving more and brainwashed the citizens, the victims into believing his selfish way of using wishes. TL;DR Bottom line: make Magnifico have a reason to be greedy, make him power hungry with wish stealing, make the townsfolk the victims without them realizing it and have Asha suffer loss through the victims to understand the true value of a wish. This idea isn’t perfect, but it gives the villain a chance to be a villain from the start and grows in threat level and power

@@colbystearns5238 Thank you! I love making story concepts and seeing the deconstruction of wish gave me inspiration. Though the main inspiration was what magnifico could have been: bowser from paper mario 64. That version of bowser was so competent, menacing and truly a power hungry villain abusing wishes like magnifico could have been doing. He had the power of the star rod, and stole everyone's abilities to make wishes AND sealed the stars that granted wishes away, so ONLY bowser could make wishes. EVERYONE in the mushroom kingdom suffered because of wish powered minions taking over all areas of the kingdom. Mario was defeated within an inch of his life, bowser became invincible... and that was all within the tutorial of the game. Talk about stakes, talk about victims, talk about investment into the villain

I feel like the problem lies within the backstory of how Rosas was found. Yes, he did flee with his wife, but is there another side to the story? He could've been evil from the get go, with some people being suspicious of his origins but end up being silenced. But trying to make it not sound like a classic Disney twist villain would be very difficult
