I'm a bit late to this but I'll answer anyway :) (Please don't think I'm an expert in this stuff, I'm only a young teenager) --- How long does the earthquake take? (I'm assuming you know what faults are, if not please look up "fault tectonics" before reading this) Magnitude relates to the size of the fault that the earthquake is released from. A magnitude 9 earthquake will have to be emitted from an extremely long fault, and a longer fault will shake for larger periods of time than a shorter fault. This is why a magnitude 10 earthquake is impossible (that we know of), because no fault on earth is long enough to generate one. --- ...as well as the distance of shaking scales II, III, VI, VIII, XI. The scale used here is the Modified Mercalli scale, you can look that up in your own time for a much more detailed explanation than I can put here. Earthquakes emit seismic waves. As those waves have more area to cover the further they move they spread out, and the intensity is less than closer to the epicenter. Sound waves drop off the same way, if this helps you understand a little better. Hope this answers your questions!

Even the Serayu River ends in Cilacap, which is a lowland with sediments. It is just a bit odd that he put them in VII-VIII meanwhile Jogja is up to IX. Also the S wave reach my city 1:39 intensity 6 in my city ⚠️⚠️ worrying about landslides Also why bandung intensity is 9? Is the lembang fault activated?
