On December 26, 2004, while the whole world had just finished the Christmas holidays, an unprecedented natural disaster struck the countries that bathe in the vast Indian Ocean. Many Westerners deserted their daily lives to recharge their batteries in the sun, on the other side of the world.
We met up with family, friends or on honeymoon, for magical moments, in the most exotic destinations. But fate had other plans. At 7:58 in the morning, the earth began to tremble off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Magnitude 9.3 on the Richter scale. Unheard of in living memory. A gigantic wall of water began its deadly journey on the west coast of Sumatra, to end up at the edge of the Indian Ocean, sowing death and despair.
It would leave 200,000 dead in its wake. The whole world became aware of the scale of this disaster almost instantly. Tourists' amateur cameras record live images, images that will travel around the world. Our documentary unfolds minute by minute the fate of these families who, through their holiday films, make us live their particular experience. The testimonies are poignant.
Destinies intersect. The victims are forever linked together in life and in death. We tell their stories.

In 1969, we had a huge earthquake that devastated a few cities. Animals reacted strangely even a few days prior. Their sensory perception is much finer tuned than ours. My border collie knew a day in advance when thunder brewed in clear, blue skies. Always pay attention to animal behaviour changes.

The most frightening scene was at Banda Aceh. It was the biggest nightmare to me. That 10 or 15 foot churning mass of splintered wood, the remains of the homes that were ripped apart. So much of it that the top was like a raft, with people climbing around on it. They were trying to get to some where they could climb off to safety. Anyone who fell into the water had no chance of survival at all. It didn’t matter if they could swim. With all that churning, splintered wood and sheets of tin from the roofs of homes a person would be torn to pieces in seconds. That scene will remain, stuck in my memory forever.

yup. i was at that bridge 8:01. me and my siblings just escaped the water from the area where we lived. we saw people are flocking at this bridge so we stopped by and take a look. some got to the top of the floating debris and people are trying to help them out. some fell back into the water then more and more debris kept coming piling up on top of them. some survived but some... well a lot of things in there that can stab you or tear your limbs apart, or just stuck under there until your lungs give out :( oh, when i was about to leave the bridge trying to figure out where to go next, somebody was shouting that there is a baby among the debris. then another person shouting the baby's alive. then the first person who saw the baby jumped to get the baby with no hesitation. luckily he managed to get the baby up on the bridge safely. what a horrific day of my life. i lost my mom that day.

It was better when it didn’t have the AI voiceovers. The original documentary is mostly even in English, so I don’t know why this channel used AI to dub over it again in English with worse voices … really ruins one of the few good documentaries made in the 2000s after this happened that is so hard to find elsewhere online because the videos and firsthand accounts aren’t often seen in the other documentaries that cover this earthquake/tsunami.

I was standing in my living room in Minnesota, speaking with my sister in Florida. Suddenly, the floor jerked sideways, and I nearly fell over. I told my sister that there had been a large earthquake somewhere on the planet…she called me crazy. The next day, we woke to the news of this huge earthquake and resulting tsunami in Bande Ace. It’s been said by the forecasters that the 9.3 quake rang the earth like a bell, caused a shift of the earth’s axis, and that Dec 21 is no longer the shortest day. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen of this tragedy. I’m just now watching it on Nov 22, 2024. You did a great job. My heart still goes out to all of these people after all these years. I just love Farid. He did what I was taught to do in my flight attendant job in case of emergency….he got busy rounding up supplies, procuring a machete for bushwhacking, and getting people organized. He refused to be a victim. Good job, Farid.

Yes, you came out alive, but you have been suffering emotionally mentally since that day. How could you not? It was horrific the sites that you saw, the smells that you had to smell, the pure unreasonable site that you had to witness is something that we’re not made to experience and yet there you were having to experience it. I know that it’s been 20 years, but I hope that you have gone for help in dealing with this day as you cannot heal on your own. On December 26, 2024 I hope that you do something that will take your mind off of what happened. You’re not ignoring what happened you’re just putting it in its place and you’re moving on. Do something that is totally opposite of what you were doing that day. Go play football with a bunch of buddies. Just do something that will help you stay relaxed that day. I wish you all the best.

It's surreal watching this remembering the before and then years later visiting the after. A brilliantly told story, as it was in all its horrors. When i return this month once again to Phuket. i will look at the local people very differently after watching this, knowing many of those elderly and those in there 40 plus would remember this so vividly and must have lost loved ones. Those that stayed deserve our respect, to rebuild and carry on takes such courage. Although i had seen the changes to the area before on my last visit, i hadn't seen this documentary and have a new found respect for all the local community there. Note to myself also , do not walk in the jungle there are cobras and other deadly snakes, of course i knew this but now even more so. To survive only to die by a snake bite is too cruel. Thank you who ever did all the editing.

An unforgettable documentary that raises so many questions: what would I do, who could I save, and might I be as courageous as these survivors? One of the best and most unique documentaries I have ever seen. The combined footage poignantly captures all the action and the raw power of The Sea. The “before” scenes are idyllic and mesmerizing. And the “during” scenes are life and death frightening. And the Destruction that was both witnessed and shared again in this film- it pulls you back into the waves and under the churn itself. Finally, and most importantly, it shows us how tenacious the human spirit can be under incredible duress. We humans have the capacity to feel deep empathy even when we are down and ripped apart ourselves. The indomitable human spirit. Sending kindness and compassion to these noble survivors. We don’t usually get the answer to one of life’s most problematic questions: why me or why not me? Wishing them all much more peace in the coming years.

Living in coastal Washington state my whole life, I have grown up with tsunami warnings, sirens and roadsigns posting to escape routes. I never camp on the beach, but rather above it on the cliffside. If I have to use a hotel, I pick a top floor room. Watching these videos, and the ones from Japan, really illustrate the power of these waves. Sometimes they roll over like a pounding surf, sometimes they creep in and you can outrun the leading edge for a bit, and other times it is like the entire ocean just suddenly decides to be 30 feet higher and you are in the way...miles inland...and no house, hotel, tree or office building can withstand the weight of that water. It's incredible that we have these videos, because they are so much more terrifying than disaster movies.

A tsunami is deadly catastrophic because of its LENGTH, not its height. Those enormous waves (20ft, 30ft, 50+ ft) seen on surfing videos have a wavelength approx. 200-250 meters. That's a very long wave, no doubt. A tsunami is in a whole 'nother level. Tsunami wavelength is measured in MILES, SEVERAL MILES for each and EVERY wave in the tsunami wave-train. Everything we see in a tsunami event video is a byproduct of that enormous wavelength. Thats how they can move at the speed of a jet plane because LONG waves move faster than SHORT waves. A tsunami is the same as any other wave, including the ones in your bathtub. 🛀 They have a trough and a peak and are separated by a wavelength. That LENGTH is what makes them deadly catastrophic and sweeps entire towns right off the map.

Prior to this Tsunami, it wasn’t thought of as a possibility in the Indian Ocean. They didn’t even have a Tsunami warning center, or the means by which to detect them. The locals probably never learned about them, and the tourists were mostly from Europe (visiting Thailand is a very cheap vacation traveling from most European countries). Obviously, North and South America have a Pacific Coast, where tsunamis are frequent, at least by historical standards, so it makes sense that people here know a little more about them.

Our tsunami threat was a just barely. We didn’t know about Charleston earthquake causing a tsunami, much less the one Lisbon sent in 1755. I always wonder why kids like us knew about tsunamis and it takes people by surprise today. Most of the kids I met at the beach knew to run to high ground if the ocean grabs all its water and turns the beach into dry land. Why did we know?

I have watched many videos of the Boxing Day Tsunami. I even remembered where I was when I first found out about it. I was in Primm, Nevada where my wife and I had stopped on our way home after spending Christmas in Las Vegas. This documentary, out of the many I have seen, is by far the best. What I found, that profoundly touched me, were the personal stories of the survivors. What they were doing before during and after this disaster. The makers did a respectful story of that terrible day. I hope all the people that survived have been able to continue with their lives and while they will never forget what they lived through, I hope they have healed emotionally. thank you.

Whoever did the translation/commentary - thank you, an absorbing video!. The young couple (Farid & Veronique ??) - I really felt for her when it shows them returning from the hill they'd stayed on overnight - having to walk past dead bodies (and so many of them!) must've been horrendous!. Escaping from the tsunami and then having to spend the night in a place where deadly snakes are around would mentally exhaust any super-hero !. Wherever those two are now, I wish them a long and happy life !

i lived there, in Banda Aceh at the time. it was horrible! i lost my mom. we didn't find her body. some said the red cross found her and brought he to a mass grave yard. one of the people on the roof across the house of that doctor is my sister's friend. she ran away together with her family hand in hand but she lost them one by one. she survived alone. similar thing happened to one of my classmate he was swept away to a palm tree. and oh the nightmare when the school starts again in the next few months! we cried from each other's stories on that day while figuring out who of our friends survived or not. :(

Awesome doc of these survivors. I remember trying for over 2 weeks to reach friends who frequented Phuket in winter here. Not all went, thankfully, & the few who did, miraculously survived. My heart goes out to these people in the film, who don’t realize there is a Savior we all have, that waits patiently & lovingly, for us to cry out to Him, to save us from ourselves. I pray those still alive in this film, will know the love of Jesus, & know that eternal paradise awaits all who put their faith, hope & trust, in Him.♥️✝️

That's so interesting to me... I'm a firm believer that with all the comforts of civilization, humans have lost this internal sense almost like way that animals communicate telepathically. I think we have lost hunting and our old strategic ways that animals still use and maybe it's just something that you lose if you don't use and we have lost it over many generations of evolving

@@MyCatHatesPhish Nah, humans have exploited everything possible since the beginning of our existence. Humans have created the hell on earth for pretty much every species including ourselves. We don't have some "unique" way to decipher animal behavior and its certainly not a genetic thing.

Those who left their bodies don´t need what you would call "God". They are well protected and happy. We will need all of our luck and clear thinking next year when we don´t want to leave the planet (which is not the end). And god is not what you think. It is a frequency, consciousness. Not a lord or person. No material. Not even energy. Prime Source of everything.

I am surprised that the natural citizens living on any coast are not taught tsunami warning signs in school and hotels towns etc have some kind of action plan in place should it happen. An air raid siren would have warned ppl on beach and town to seek high ground immediately. this was more devastating because they had no warning system no alerts nothing in place to tell visitors to get away. This should be mandatory for all coastal areas Tiens resorts etc.
